Okinawa which is in a World
For years the U.S. military have called Okinawa, Keystone of the Pacific. That makes sense as you see the location of this island, it look as though a key stone which was placed by a master of Goishi, to protect the entrance of the Pacific from Chinese main land But Okinawa was not the only land considered important during the cold war. The whole Japan archipelago itself as well as the Philippines was considered to be a line of defense from the communist forces. On January 12th, 1950, Dean Gooderham Acheson former United States Secretary of State said “The defense line of America is a line which starts from Philippines, and runs right through Ryukyu Islands to Japan, Aleutian, and to Alaska, but the center of this line is Okinawa”. Why is Okinawa so valuable that it’s called “the center of our line of defense” or called “the Keystone? The reason is not geographical, rather so that they can cut it off from Japan and take over and use this land in anyway they wish. As a result, Western Camp successfully blocked both Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and China in east Asia both of which were mighty communist countries, so that Japanese people in the mainland could speak of “Peace Constitution” “peace at any price”, or “Three Nonnuclear Principles”, without suffering self-contradiction. ※ The current number of U.S. military personnel in Japan are 36,000, and 25,000 and 70% of them are in Okinawa.

As〔沖縄の米軍基地問題とは、つまり「海兵隊+嘉手納」問題であることが you can see in the map, the issues of U.S. base in この地図からわかる。米軍がすでに不要なはずの海兵隊基地を返還しない Okinawa are “Marine Corps + Kadena Air Base”. The reason why U.S. military won’t return the Marine Corps base, which のは、 「次は嘉手納の返還だ」となることを絶対に避けたいからだろう〕 is no longer in use, is to avoid “Return the Kadena base next”. フィリピン海
U.S. Military Bases in Okinawa Main Island Okinawa main island is a small island with a length of 100 km and a width of 4km to 28km, with an area of 1208 square kilometers with 1.23 million residents. But the area of U.S. Base located in this island is 233 square kilometers which is taking up 18.4 % of this island and a large portion of which is located near residential districts. The Okinawa Main Island in comparison with all of Japan is about 0.3 %. The U.S. Base (exclusive-use facilities) is taking up 70.6% of this island which is obviously not normal and is an unfair situation. (Comparing the entire Okinawa prefecture, it will be 0.6% of Japan and 73.9% of the prefecture is being used as a U.S. Base) The people of Okinawa are not anti-U.S. But what they are pleading is “If Japan-U.S. Security Treaty is necessary to protect Japan, then share the burden together as a whole Japan. If it is needed in East Asia, then share the burden together as a whole entire East Asia.”, which is reasonable request. Chalmers Ashby Johnson who is known for his research of US military, said the following about Okinawa Base, “the Japanese government and Pentagon are using Okinawa in corporation. --Japanese emphasize the Japan-U.S. alliance and are receiving its benefits, but did not want to set the Base in main land, so isolated the Base in this island and imposition the sacrifice. No doubt it is an abstract puzzle complicatedly tangled up after years. But if we keep “ignoring the facts” and leave the pain of citizens untended, then soon the root of the country we call Japan will be rotten.

The GSDF base is spreading to the other side of Naha military port. There are also the MSDF and the ASDF bases that are further ahead of it, and the Naha Airport runway at the ocean side. All of them were U.S. military bases until the return of Okinawa to Japan in 1972. 10
