Valley Cottage held their annual math night on April 6, 2017. The event was well attended and we were thrilled to have over 35 volunteers which consisted of teachers, teaching assistants, and former students. The evening included a math story and a brief overview on the importance of developing rigor through the use of reasoning activities. The breakout sessions included logic games, puzzles, tangram activities, geometry activities, fluency and fraction games. You can find some pictures on the VCE Math page on echalk. Their website has many ideas about reading, booklists and activities for children. Come check a book out! On Monday, May 15th the Middle School Librarian, Nora Quinn, will meet with our 5th graders to talk about the Middle School Library and Summer Reading. We look forward to hearing about the Middle School library and all the treasures within. As an extension of their “Mixtures” Unit, 5th graders made super tasty Rock Candy! Science is often referred to as the most fun subject in school mainly because… it is! It can be a most delicious subject, too. Students dissolved their solute (sugar) with a solvent (warm water) to create a solution (a supersaturated solution, to be exact). Students gave the suspended sugar particles a great place to begin crystallizing when they dried sugar onto the stick ahead of time - these are called “seed” crystals. As their solution cooled, the sugar fell out of the solution and crystals began to grow on a stick - creating a tasty science treat - rock candy! Mr. Adam Beirlein, 5th Grade Teacher KINDERPREP - Wednesday, May 25th, 6:30-7:30pm All incoming VCE Kindergartners are invited to join us at VCE to experience an evening of Kindergarten. There will be pizza, classroom time, a school tour and activities in the gym! Please call 353-7291 to register.

Orientation for Parents of 5th graders moving up to Nyack Middle School is May 31, 2017 at 7-8PM at NYACK MIDDLE SCHOOL.

ATTIRE: Please NO OPEN-TOE SHOES -- flip flops, heels or wedges. We cannot ensure your child’s safety in unsafe footwear. Children must wear appropriate footwear for Physical Education class and recess. DISMISSAL: PARENTS: We encourage you to follow normal dismissal procedures at all times. However, if you must dismiss children early on class trips, concerts, or moving up ceremony days, and if siblings are needed, please send notes stating a time to the attention of each child’s teacher via backpack on the event day so that teachers know what time to dismiss students to the office. A specific dismissal time is necessary on all notes. The student sign out book will be at the security desk on event days. Thank you for your cooperation.
