VALVE TECHNICIAN #ValveAssembler #FieldServiceTechnician #PipelineTechnician Valves regulate, direct and control the flow of oil and gas fluids… without valves, oil and gas simply wouldn’t flow. Or, it would flow the wrong direction or to the wrong place. A working valve can also shut down the flow altogether, which is important if something is not functioning as it should. You ensure the proper functioning of mechanical regulating and controlling devices such as safety and flow valves, electric meters, gas regulators and thermostats.
HOW DO I GET HERE? A high school diploma (or equivalent) is required. Mechanical aptitude along with specific technical training on valves and valve repair is an asset. Some employers will prefer a diploma in instrumentation, electrical, electrical or mechanical engineering technology.
What does this career look like? Your job involves troubleshooting and testing. One day might see you hauling out dry ice and drilling mud to freeze a portion of a pipeline so its contents will stay put. Another day you might do some serious investigation on a problem. What might the problem be? Sometimes it’s the wrong valve materials for the job or the wrong valve – like if you were to attach a showerhead to a garden hose… it might work, but not very well.

• Standard and emergency first aid • H2S Alive • Other health and safety training requirements to be determined by specific job requirements.
What would I do? You know them all - ball valves, gate valves, check valves, globe valves, butterfly valves. Because valves are critical in getting oil to flow to the right place, whether from a wellhead, well or through a gathering pipeline to a plant, you have an important responsibility. Perhaps you repair an emergency shutdown valve – a valve that stops the flow after sensing a change in pressure. These valves are critical in preventing leaks. This role could also include:
4 Testing valves and regulators for leaks and accurate temperature and pressure settings, using precision testing equipment 4 Performing high pressure hydrostatic testing to ensure proper functioning 4 Inspecting equipment, structures or materials like valve function on a specialized test rig 4 Examining valves or mechanical control device parts for defects, dents or loose attachments, and marking malfunctioning areas of defective units 4 Dismantling valves using hand and/or power tools +5YRS 4 Refinishing interior surfaces to ensure proper operation
