ATER Pordenone’s IT system is a complex environment, managing many missioncritical applications. Its virtualized environment is made up of two IBM servers, two cluster nodes based on Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V and around 15 virtual machines (VMs). Various operating systems are used—from Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition to Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Edition.

ATER Pordenone began virtualizing around four years ago, and as of today, 99% of its applications have been virtualized using Microsoft Hyper-V. These applications include some mission-critical elements that require greater protection since they handle sensitive data regarding housing and tenants.
The Veeam Solution To better protect virtualized data and perform simple and consistent backups, ATER Pordenone decided to use Veeam® Backup & Replication™, the ideal software for VMware and Hyper-V backups, data restoration, replication, VM management and risk elimination.
ATER Pordenone is a local government organization for public and social housing with registered offices in Pordenone. It is a public corporation which, apart from playing an institutional role for public and social housing and the allocation of homes, also assists town councils with its planning capacities and technical skills. Since 1971, ATER Pordenone has created 3,588 homes across the 51 municipalities of the Pordenone Province. Currently, the organization manages 3,570 apartments distributed among 394 buildings.
“I discovered Veeam at a conference in Milan where the software was being presented to the public,” said Stefano Gelmini, IT manager for ATER Pordenone. “For me, it was a new backup product and I was intrigued right from the start. So after finding out more, I contacted a local supplier who suggested an online demo who showed me how the product had been successfully installed for another client. On this occasion, I gained first-hand experience of the advantages of using Veeam Backup & Replication with regard to other backup software.” ATER Pordenone downloaded the free trial of Veeam Backup & Replication to compare it to other software used in their offices. “Then one morning, one of our machines wouldn’t switch on,” Gelmini said. “So I tried the restore functionality with the free trial version of Veeam Backup & Replication, and in 15 minutes, the machine was ready and in perfect working order. I was then convinced that the Veeam software was exactly what we needed.” With only the free trial version, ATER Pordenone managed to restore their working environment with no problems or technical training.
