Modern Data Protection Built for Virtualization
Trend Micro Chooses Veeam to Maximise Virtualisation Outcomes “Of all the solutions we tested, Veeam offered the fastest backup and recovery, the easiest file-level and item-level restore and was the best for DR. Veeam is the most intuitive and cost-effective solution for our virtual environment.” — Daniel Kaiser Corp IT Staff Engineer Trend Micro Incorporated
The Business Challenge INDUSTRY:
Software and Internet COMPANY:
A global leader in security software, Trend Micro Incorporated develops Internet content security and threat management solutions to make digital information exchange safe. Trend Micro’s solutions for consumers, businesses and governments provide layered content security to protect information on mobile devices, endpoints, gateways, servers and the cloud.
Trend Micro Incorporated knows the virtualisation industry well. Working in close collaboration with VMware, Trend Micro delivered the first agentless security platform for VMware vSphere-based virtualised machines (VMs) and desktops, as well as vCloud-based cloud servers. The solution, Trend Micro Deep Security, is optimised to preserve VM performance, increase densities and maximise return on investment (ROI). It’s no wonder that a forward-thinking, virtualisation-savvy company like Trend Micro would orchestrate an in-depth analysis to find optimum protection for its virtualised applications and data. The company has more than 3,000 VMware vSphere VMs in four datacenters (United States, Japan, Taiwan and Germany) that support business operations and 5,000 employees. Daniel Kaiser, Staff Engineer at Trend Micro, and his colleagues set up a lab environment to test several VM backup and recovery solutions. Their goal was to find an easy-to-use, cost-effective solution built specifically for virtualisation. They wanted fast and reliable VM backup, replication and recovery; easy file-level restore for virtualised operating systems and easy item-level restore for applications they planned to virtualise, such as Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and SQL; built-in features to help them meet recovery point and recovery time objectives (RPOs and RTOs); and uncomplicated self-service recovery for selected users. “Our plan was to make the new data protection solution the foundation for disaster recovery in our virtual environment,” Kaiser said. “We didn’t have DR in our virtual environment, so choosing the right solution was extremely important. During the testing process, we found most solutions to be complex and difficult to use, except for one.”
The Veeam Solution Trend Micro chose Veeam® Backup & Replication™ for data protection and DR in its virtual environment. Veeam provides powerful, easy-to-use and affordable backup, replication and recovery of virtualised applications and data for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. “Of all the solutions we tested, Veeam offered the fastest backup and recovery, the easiest file-level and item-level restore and was the best for DR,” Kaiser said. “Veeam is the most intuitive and cost-effective solution for our VMs.”
SUCCESS STORY
CHALLENGES: Recovery was drawn out and limited in the virtual environment: restoring a VM took hours and filelevel recovery wasn’t possible.
SOLUTION: Veeam Backup & Replication™
RESULTS: • Fast, easy recovery of VMs in minutes • Self-service recovery takes burden off IT • Built-in features provide DR and help meet RPOs and RTOs
Before Veeam Backup & Replication was implemented in Trend Micro’s virtual environment, VMs weren’t backed often enough to provide multiple recovery points, restoring a VM took hours and file-level and item-level recovery weren’t possible, making it difficult to meet RPOs and RTOs. With Veeam, fast, frequent and verifiable backups provide multiple recovery points, a failed VM can be restored from a backup in minutes, and granular recovery is available for any virtualised operating system and application. “We really like 1-Click Restore in Veeam Enterprise Manager,” Kaiser said. “It lets us recover entire VMs and individual files, and we have the option of providing self-restore to users, which provides faster recovery times for them and takes the burden off IT.” Kaiser said Veeam Backup & Replication lifted another burden as Trend Micro approached 100% virtualisation. “It gave us peace of mind knowing Veeam provides fast and easy recovery for Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and SQL,” he said. “Recovering items from these applications can be difficult with other backup tools, but recovery with Veeam is fantastic. Veeam is intuitive, so recovery is easy.” Trend Micro also uses Veeam Backup & Replication to back up and recover vCloud Director VMs. Veeam support for vCloud Director (vCD) goes deep with integrated visibility of the vCD infrastructure in the backup console and backups that include the metadata and attributes associated with vApps and VMs. Recovery enables restore of vApps and VMs directly back to vCD and includes support for fast provisioning. In addition to backing up VMs, Trend Micro uses Veeam to replicate VMs between datacentres for DR (replicas can also be maintained onsite for high availability). Before Veeam, the company didn’t have the ability to replicate VMs. Now, Trend Micro has the option of failing over to a replica VM at another datacentre and failing back to recover the original VM on the source host. Not only does Veeam save time for Trend Micro, it also saves money. Kaiser said Veeam Backup & Replication was 40% less expensive than the other solutions he and his colleagues tested, saving Trend Micro approximately $640,000. During the testing process, Kaiser and his colleagues also evaluated each vendor’s customer support during software deployment, and they opened help tickets to check responsiveness after deployment. “One of the things we liked best about Veeam support was having resources available to help us with implementation,” Kaiser said. “They answered my questions during deployment and were always willing to look into our system with me to explain a concept. We also like the knowledge base articles the Veeam support team sends us when we open a help ticket. Admins can often solve issues on their own, so those articles help speed up the support process. If we still need help, the Veeam support team is very responsive, providing the answers we need within a day.” More than 80,000 customers around the world use Veeam Backup & Replication to protect their virtual environments. Many of them also use Trend Micro’s Deep Security software in conjunction with Veeam for maximum data protection and recoverability. Because both solutions are agentless, customers save time and money purchasing, deploying and maintaining agents in VMs to be secured, backed up and recovered.

Fast, easy recovery of VMs in minutes Before Veeam Backup & Replication was deployed at Trend Micro, the VM recovery process took hours, and file-level recovery wasn’t possible. The complete opposite is true with Veeam. Not only does Veeam automatically verify the recoverability of every backup through a feature called SureBackup®, it also restarts a failed VM from a backup in minutes, enabling a feature called Instant VM Recovery™. “SureBackup and Instant VM Recovery are our two favorite features in Veeam,” Kaiser said. “Now we know backups are recoverable, and if we need to recover them, it takes minutes.” Self-service recovery of VMs takes burden off IT Once a VM is recovered with Veeam, granular recovery is available for any virtualised operating system and application. For example, Trend Micro uses Veeam Explorer™ for Microsoft Exchange and Veeam Explorer™ for Microsoft SharePoint to quickly and easily recover individual items. Trend Micro also uses a Veeam feature called 1-Click Restore to let users recover VMs and files through the Enterprise Manager web user interface, resulting in faster recovery times for them and a decreased burden on IT. Built-in features provide DR and help meet RPOs and RTOs Veeam provides everything Trend Micro needs for DR. Fast, frequent backup facilitates multiple recovery points to meet RPOs; quick recovery helps meet RTOs; and Veeam replication lets Trend Micro failover to a replica VM offsite and failback to recover the original VM onsite.
