New South Wales June 2009 • New South Wales recorded 5,621 thefts in the June quarter, which represents an increase of 156 thefts from the previous quarter. The majority of the vehicles stolen (82%) were passenger/light commercial vehicles, 11% were motorcycles, and the remainder were heavy and other vehicles. • New South Wales’ quarterly theft rate for passenger/light commercial vehicles equates to 1.14 thefts per 1,000 registered vehicles or 0.65 thefts per 1,000 population. These compare with 0.88 and 0.57 nationally. • The City of Blacktown again recorded the greatest number of passenger/light commercial vehicle thefts (318), while the City of Penrith recorded the greatest number of motorcycle thefts (36). • Almost half of the passenger/light commercial vehicles stolen in New South Wales during the June quarter were manufactured in the 1990s (45%), and another 36% were manufactured since 2000. • Of late model (aged less than 10 years) passenger/light commercial vehicles, Holden Commodore VX was the top theft target, with 68 stolen and a recovery rate of 51%. • Of motorcycles stolen in the quarter those manufactured by Yamaha and Honda recorded the greatest number of thefts, with 134 and 132 thefts respectively.
Part 1: All Vehicles Theft and recovery trends Table 1 shows that New South Wales recorded a total of 5,621 thefts during the June quarter, which is an increase of 156 thefts over the previous quarter. However. the number of thefts for the 12 months to June 2009 remained lower than for the previous 12-month period. Table 2 shows that most of the vehicles stolen in the quarter were passenger/light commercial vehicles (82%). Overall 55% of vehicles were recovered by the end of the quarter, which is lower than the national recovery rate of 65%. To highlight the different theft profiles for different vehicle types, the remaining analyses in this report present data for passenger/light commercial vehicles, motorcycles and other vehicle types separately.
