Ivermectin has the broadest range of activity of any dewormer on the market, including against lungworms and strongyloides of foals, with broader activity against bot species. Moxidectin has broader activity against small strongyles, including late encysted stages, and also is slower to be metabolized by the horse’s body, therefore suppresses egg counts longer. This advantage should be weighed against the more-favorable safety profile for ivermectin than moxidectin, based on the number of suspected adverse drug reaction reports filed with the FDA. Moxidectin has the narrowest safety margin in dosage and is not recommended for use in foals under four months of age. Equell is the only single-dose ivermectin paste that will deworm a horse up to a 1,320-pound horse.
