The Excellence Award • This is the highest award presented in the VEX IQ programs. The recipient of this award is a team that exemplifies overall excellence in building a high quality robotics program. This team excels in many areas and is a shining example of dedication, devotion, hard work and teamwork. • For large events, use calculator as a guide oThen apply judgment • For small events, Consider top Design and STEM project Award candidates as your Excellence Candidates.
Determining the Excellence Award • Judges should determine the Excellence winner once they have completed the process of interviewing teams for all awards at an event and once the qualification matches are complete. • The Teamwork Champion does not need to be known to determine Excellence
Collect Information Needed to Find Finalists The judging process for using the Excellence Calculator. Judges should begin by collecting the following information: • Team numbers for top contenders in the Qualifying match rankings. • Team numbers for top contenders in the Robot Skills Rankings. • Team numbers for top contenders for the Design Award that have submitted an Engineering Notebook. • Team numbers for top contenders for the STEM research project. • Record the number of times a team is considered a top contender for all other Judged awards at the event.

Judged performance Ranking in all other award categories Judge Ranking points are awarded for every judged award for which a team is in the top 5 finalist (up to 4 points available) Tournament Qualification Round Ranking A QR Ranking Point is earned for finishing in the top 8 of the qualifying matches (one point available) Robot Skills Challenge Ranking A RS Ranking Point is earned by finishing in the top 10 (or top 5 for smaller events) of the Robot Skills contest (one point available) A Team Must have both an Engineering Notebook and a STEM Research Project Presentation to be considered for Excellence.

STEM Research Project Presentation A point is awarded for each of the top 5 ranked teams being considered for the STEM Research Project Presentation (one point available)
Robot Skills Score (1 pt if in top 10 of Robot skills scores)
Teams are given points towards the Excellence Award in the following categories: Design Award Ranking A point is earned for finishing in top 5 Design Award finalists. (one point available)
Qualifying Ranking Score (1 pt if in the top 8 of qualifying matches)

Note: Remember that this calculator is to be used as a guide. The final decision in choosing an Excellence Award winner is still a decision to be made by the Judges after weighing all factors at an event. Teams with higher scores are only candidates for the Excellence Award, not necessarily the awardees.
STEM Research Presentation Ranking (1 pt for each STEM Project Award top 5 finalists)
Team numbers of the top 5 candidates for the Design Award (or top 25% of teams with Engineering Notebooks, if greater than 5) are entered in the first column. Teams are then assigned points using the categories below based upon their performance. The total points for each team are then added to determine the top 2-3 teams. The calculator will show their total score in the last column.

Use this Excellence Award Calculator to guide your judges panel in determining the Excellence award candidates for your event. As a strong contender in numerous award categories, the Excellence Award winner deserves to be recognized for building a quality robotics program. The recipient of this award is a team that demonstrates overall excellence in all components of the VEX IQ Challenge. The Excellence award winner is a team we want all teams to emulate. The Judges’ final decision on the Excellence Award may include a team’s behavior, sportsmanship, and professionalism at the event. A team is composed of students, mentors, and adults at the event.

Judges Final Decision • Note that teams 202, 606, & 808 show up for numerous judged awards and are top contenders for the Excellence Award. • Judges consider everything they see and hear at the event. • Is the team student centered? • Feedback from fields and volunteers
Excellence at World Championship • VEX IQ Challenge Eligibility - Teams must have: o Been awarded Excellence award during competition season o Submitted an Engineering Notebook • At the 2018 VEX Robotics World Championships, the Excellence Award will be awarded to: o VRC High School overall o VRC Middle School overall o VEX IQ Challenge Middle School overall o VEX IQ Challenge Elementary School overall • The Excellence Award is earned by an entire school or organization at Worlds, not just a single team. Each qualified school/organization will be given a single Excellence Award Interview Slot. • Previous VEX Worlds Excellence winners are not considered for 3 years.
