Sewing & Embroidery Club – September 11th

Vinyl Pencil Pouch and/or Sewing Organizer Techniques: Sewing with vinyl, inserting zippers into vinyl, binding Note from your instructors: Starting in September 2013 (the first session of the 2013-14 club year), Sewing & Embroidery Club will be offered one day every other month. Because we understand that this change may inhibit your ability to stay and sew for more than one session, we have decided that whenever we offer a larger project, we will also offer a smaller companion project. The smaller project will contain all of the same techniques as the larger project and will be designed to be completed within the 3-hour class time. As you can see below, the pre-class preparation steps focus on the smaller project, but the supplies for the larger one are listed as well so that you can purchase everything needed at one time. In September, these projects are a Pencil Pouch and a Sewing Organizer. The Pencil Pouch is designed so that it can be used in your choice of three different ways: 1. As-is, tucked into the Sewing Organizer when you need more room. 2. A strip of hook-and-loop tape (aka Velcro®) can be attached at the top of the pencil pouch and at the top of the top pocket of the sewing organizer so that the pencil pouch can be secured to the organizer. 3. 3/8” metal grommets can be inserted into the lower edge of the pencil pouch for use in a 2- or 3-ring binder. Supplies Needed for the Pencil Pouch: Fabric & Such r One 10” x 6” rectangle of fabric for the outside (recommended fabrics = quilt-weight cotton, denim, duck cloth, home-dec) r One 10” x 6” rectangle of fabric for the lining (recommended fabrics = same as outer fabrics, mix-or-match fabric types as desired) r One 10” x 6” rectangle of lightweight fusible fleece (Pellon 987F®) – only needed if using a quilt-weight or similar fabric for the outside r One 10” x 6” rectangle of heavy clear vinyl (recommend 12-16 gauge). Do not fold vinyl, roll up if necessary. r One 10” x 6” rectangle of Heat-N-Bond® Iron-On Vinyl (available at DSC while supplies last). This will be used to make the lining into a laminated fabric so that the pockets can be wiped clean. r One 12” or longer all-purpose zipper r 1-1/8 yards of Extra-Wide Double-Fold Bias Tape (comes in a 1/2” x 3 yard package) r Optional: 20” of Single-Fold Bias Tape (comes in a 1/2” x 4 yard package) -OR- 20” of 3/8”-1/2” wide grosgrain ribbon. This will be used to cover the exposed edges of the zipper (if you want them covered) r Optional: One 8-1/2” strip of 1/2” or 3/4” wide sew-in hook-and-loop tape (for option #2 above) r Optional: Two or Three 3/8” metal grommets and a 2- or 3-ring binder (for option #3 above) Thread r Polyester sewing thread to blend with fabrics for construction. √ Needles & Notions r Size 80 & 90 Microtex Sharp or Universal needles √ r Wonder Clips® √ r Wonder tape® √ r “Junk” or paper scissors (not round-end like Kindergarten scissors). These will be used to cut the ends of the zippers off and to cut the vinyl from behind the zipper. Most scissors with the big, rounded ends do not fit between the vinyl and the zipper. Pre-Class Preparation for the Pencil Pouch: Mark the Heavy Vinyl: Measure 2” down the 6” sides of the 6” x 10” rectangle of heavy vinyl and draw a line across the vinyl (parallel to the 10” side) using a ball point pen.

Laminate the Lining Fabric: Following the manufacturer’s directions, fuse the Iron-On Vinyl to the right side of the lining fabric. This MUST be completed prior to the class. The classroom iron will not be available for this step.

Embroidery: Samples Note: The floral/butterfly design (shown below) is from Michelle’s Designs http://www.michellesdesigns.com. The floral design (shown below) on the pencil pouch is from Embroidery Library http://www.emblibrary.com. The monogram is from Martha Pullen’s Creative Monograms software. Most monogram software programs will have similar fonts and circles. 1. To find the embroider-able area of the outside fabric, measure 1/2” in from each raw edge. This is the area that will be covered by your binding. a. If you plan to add grommets to the lower edge, measure an additional 1” up from the lower edge and delete that area. b. If you plan to add hook-and-loop tape to the top edge, measure an additional 1” down from the top edge and delete that area. 2. Center your embroidery in the remaining area.
