Football Meets Eastern New Mexico In LSC Playoffs
The Texas A&M-Kingsville football team takes part in the Lone Star Conference postseason playoffs this weekend, taking on Eastern New Mexico Saturday in Portales, N.M. Kickoff time will be 6 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time). This is the first year of the playoffs, which are believed to be the first for a league at any level.
All eight of the LSC schools are involved in the two-week event. The Javelinas enter the playoffs as the eighth-seeded club and Eastern is seeded No. 5. The seeding was determined by the final in the final regular-season conference standings. In the teams’ regular-season meeting this fall, the Greyhounds
defeated the Javelinas, 31-0, in Kingsville. TAMUK leads the series between the club, 23-6. The Javelinas are 1-8 for the year. They are averaging 313.8 total yards a game, 180.8 rushing and 133 passing. The defense has allowed 467.9 total yards a game, 239.5
rushing and 228.4 passing. Trey Mitchell, 6-3, 190-pound junior quarterback from Clovis, Calif., leads the Javelina offensive statistics. He has averaged 66.1 yards a game rushing and 4.5 yards a carry. He has scored once on the ground. Mitchell has completed 71 of (Continued on Page 2)

Javelina Hash Football Goes to Eastern for Playoffs Javelina Hash By Fred Nuesch, Coordinator of Athletic External Affairs
THE LONE STAR Conference football playoffs begin this weekend with all eight of the league squads involved in the action. This is the first year for the playoffs, and it is believed to be the first time that a league at any level has held a playoff at the end of the season involving all of its teams. The conference championship has already been determined and the playoffs will merely decide a postseason winner. It can help or hurt the league’s chances of getting a team or teams in the NCAA Division II playoffs. Entering the next two weekends, Texas A&M-Commerce looks to have an NCAA playoff spot wrapped up. But what if the Lions lose in the playoffs? What if they lost two games? There’s also a chance that if a team other than conference champion wins the playoffs, it might get into the NCAA bracket along with the champ. It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out. THE MAIN REASON the LSC playoffs were added to the schedule was to give each of the conference members two additional games. It has become more and more difficult to find non-league opponents with most of the conferences filling their schedules with league contests. The LSC had eight members this fall, giving each school seven conference games. As it stands now, there will be seven football-playing schools in the LSC next fall. That means there would be only six games against conference schools without the postseason games. THE JAVELINAS WILL travel the greatest distance for their LSC playoff opening game Saturday. They’ll have to go to Portales, N.M., one of the longest trips on the Javelina conference schedule. If the Javelinas can defeat the Greyhounds, their second game could be with West Texas A&M in Canyon, also one of the longest trips on the TAMUK league schedule. Portales and Canyon are each 658 miles from Kingsville. Being precise, the mileage website lists both at 657.8 miles. IT WAS SOMEWHAT of a surprise when Eastern announced the game will be played at 6 p.m., Mountain Standard Time, or 7 p.m., Central Standard Time. This time of the year, the weather in Portales can be unpredictable. I can recall snow, rain and frigid conditions in Portales, and Canyon. But I can also recall some beautiful, perfect football days and nights. Checking the 10-day forecast for this weekend, it calls for sunny conditions Saturday with a high of 69 degrees. This forecast was made on Sunday. YOU’LL NOTICE THAT there isn’t a final LSC football standings in this week’s paper. (Continued on Page 3)

Jordan Thomas, 5-11, 165pound junior wideout from San Antonio (Stevens), and Patrick LaFleur, 5-8, 174-pound senior wideout from Houston (Cypress Woods), each has 27 receptions. Thomas has 399 yards receiving and has scored three times. LaFleur’s receptions have been for 310 yards and a score. Trevor Pesek, 5-10, 205pound senior safety from Inez (Vanderbilt Industrial), has 84 tackles and 3.5 have been for losses. He has a sack and two interceptions. The Greyhounds are 5-4 for the year. They average 448.7 total yards a game, 310.6 rushing and 138.1 passing. Defensively, the Hounds have given up 361.9 total yards an outing, 86.8 rushing and 275.1 passing. E’lon Spight, 5-10, 200-pound senior fullback from St. Louis, Mo., leads the rushing with 140.2 yards a game and 5.2 yards a carry. He has 15 rushing touchdowns. Jeremy Buurma, 6-2, 180pound junior quarterback from Las Cruces, N.M., has completed 61 of 131 (.466) passes for 138.1 yards a game. He has thrown for 14
touchdowns and has had five intercepted. Jacob Johnson, 5-10, 185pound senior wideout from Idalou, has had 24 receptions for 599 yards and seven scores. Seth Bailey, 6-2, 230-pound senior linebacker from Texico, N.M., has 60 tackles to lead the team in that categeory. He has a sack. In the earlier matchup between the teams this season, the Javelinas had 415 total yards to 278 for the Hounds. The Javelinas rushed for 290 yards and passed for 125. Eastern rushed for 50 yards and had 228 passing. Alex Rios, 6-1, 192-pound sophomore quarterback from San Antonio (McCollum), completed 13 of 29 passes for 146 yards and he had one interception.
Thomas had seven receptions for 98 yards. Trevor Moses, 6-0, 200pound freshman linebacker from Corpus Christi (Calallen), had 14 tackles for the Javelinas. Spight rushed for 78 yards for ENMU and had a touchdown. Buurma completed five of 10 passes for 125 yards and a score. Johnson had three receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown. Benjamin Langford led the Hounds defensively with 10 tackles, two for losses. He also had a pickoff. The winner of Saturday’s game will meet the winner of the West Texas A&M-McMurry game next week. The loser of this weekend’s contest will take on the loser of the WTAM-McMurry game.
Carter Voted LSC Player of the Year Andrea Carter of Midwestern State has been selected as the Lone Star Conference preseason player of the year. It was still confusing at the Highlights deadline as to how to handle West Texas’ five forfeited league contests. The LSC website has listed the Buffs’ conference percentage as .143 but it doesn’t credit their opponents with a win if they lost to the squad. We’ll run the final standings when it becomes clear as to how it should read.
WHEN TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE won the Lone Star Conference football title last weekend, it became the first league championship for the Lions since 1990. The Lions have the second most LSC titles. The Javelinas have the most with 27. It was the 21st league trophy for the Lions. Since 1954 when the Javelinas entered the LSC, the South Texans have won 27 championships and TAMUC is second with 11.
CHAMPION, A MAGAZINE published by the NCAA quarterly, had a story in the most recent issue on the NCAA Division I-AA, II and III football playoffs. While Division I is all atwitter about the start of the playoffs this season, Divisions I-AA, II and III have had the postseason action for decades. The publication wrote about some of the big championship games in the three divisions and surprisingly one of them was the 1989 title game that saw Mississippi College defeating Jacksonville (Ala.) State, 3-0, in Florence, Ala. Mississippi College had beaten the Javelinas in the first round. It was later found that the Choctaws had a lot more, and we mean a lot more, players on scholarships than allowed by Division II. They were forced to “vacate” the championship and the games they had won during the season. But that didn’t help the teams the squad had beaten in the playoffs. The 1989 Javelina team included running back Johnny Bailey, college football’s all-time leading rusher at the time and the most honored player in collegiate history; John Randle, who would go on to a professional career that would gain him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Ed LaTouf, also a first-team AllAmerican honoree that season. .
THE NCAA DIVISION II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, in which the Javelina athletes have been heavily involved since its start, has two proposals on which the NCAA members will vote on at the January convention. One will give two members of the national student-athlete committee two seats and one joint vote on the Division II Management Council, and the other will give the student-athlete committee one vote on the floor at the convention. The committee stated that this would “solidify” the students’ voice. (Continued on Page 4)
Double Duty Shaquira Kennedy, junior engineering major from El Paso, is a member of the Javelina sports information staff and was “drafted” to be a ball girl at a recent home volleyball match.
MSU Player LSC Top Choice Midwestern State’s Xavier Blackburn has been named the Lone Star Conference preseason player of the year in a poll conducted by the LSC office. Conference head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives voted in the poll. Chris Jones of Angelo State and LaDon Carnegie of Texas A&M-Commerce were runnesrup in the balloting. Blackturn, 6-4 senior forward from Verdunville, La., was on the LSC all-defensive team last season. He averaged 115 points and 7.7 rebounds a game while hitting .480 from the field.

In college football, has there been a quarterback who has gone 39-0, won three national championships, been All-America on the field and in the classroom and was under center for five exhibition games in Europe and a game in Mexico? We know of one. Richard Ritchie, who was a starter for the Javelinas in the final game of 1973 and throughout the 1974, 1975 and 1976 seasons, accomplished all of the above. It’s doubtful any other quarterback has put up such figures. Ritchie, from Mineral Wells, joined the Javelinas in 1973 and didn’t get his first start until the final game of that season. The Javelinas beat Southwest Texas, 49-10, in that matchup. Then came the amazing threeNCAA Division II Volleyball Poll Compiled by the American Volleyball Coaches Association Rank Team 1. year run that saw the team go undefeated, take the national titles, play five exhibition contests in Austria, France and Germany and play a game in Monterrey, Mexico. Ritchie was the quarterback in all on all of those occasions. Short by today’s quarterback measurements at 5-11, Ritchie was a maestro at running the veer offense. He was the outstanding back in the Lone Star Conference in 1975 and 1976. Ritchie tied with teammate Larry Collins for the LSC scoring title in 1976, each with 82 points. He was a team captain in 1976. Ritchie was Associated Press Little All-America and NAIA AllAmerica first team in 1976 and was NAIA player of the year the same

Ritchie held numerous school records after concluding his college career and also had the LSC record for most total yards and best passing percentage. After finishing with the Javelinas, he held coaching positions at the University of Texas, North Texas and Texas Tech before become an attorney in his hometown. He holds a law degree from St. Mary’s. He is a member of the Texas A&M-Kingsville Foundation board of trustees. Ritchie has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Lone Star Conference Hall of Fame and the Javelina Hall of Fame. He was on the LSC team of the decade for the 1970s. Gil Steinke was the head football coach during Ritchie’s career and Ron Harms was the offensive coordinator and coached the quarterbacks in 1974 and 1975. Former Javelina quarterback Gene Walkoviak was the offensive coordinator in Ritchie’s senior season.
