Volleyball To Take on Alumni Team Saturday

Redshirt Freshman

Cade Dyal, 5-11, 195-pound freshman from Kerrville (Tivy), is a redshirt quarterback with the Javelinas this fall. He and his teammates opened workouts last week, preparing for the Sept 2 season opener with Central Washington in Javelina Stadium. Dyal is the son of former Javelina tight end Mike Dyal.

The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team, which opens its preseason workouts Monday, will take on an alumni unit at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Steinke Center. The game will serve as a part of Saturday’s schedule that includes the annual Riviera Communications and Gulf Coast Broadband Javelina Barbecue and Auction at 5:30 p.m. at the J.K. Northway Coliseum. The alums will be facing a Javelina team that has all of its statistical leaders back from 2016. This includes eight letterwinners: …Madison Brabham, 5-11 junior hitter from Humble (Kingwood). …Krystal Faison, 5-7 senior

Changes Made In NCAA DII Football Regional Alignment

NCAA Division II Super Region 4, in which the Lone Star Conference is a member in football, will have a new look this fall. It has become more western with the addition of the Great Northwest Collegiate Conference and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The LSC and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference remain in the region. Gone from the region are the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Great Lakes Valley Conference. For the past several years, the region has ranged from upper Michigan and Ohio to California

and Utah. Now the area covers a smaller area. The region will have less teams competing for the postseason playoff spots. There were 47 football teams in the region in the past and there will be 41 this year. And the number of teams selected for postseason play from all regions will increase from six to seven this year. The top-seeded team will get a first-round bye while No. 7 will play at No. 2, No. 6 will travel to No. 3, and No. 4 will host No. 5 in the opening round. There are four super regions in Division II and each plays for a (Continued on Page 8)

outside hitter from San Antonio (Judson). …Haley Hutchinson, 6-1 junior middle blocker from Georgetown (Rouse). …Casey Klobedans, 5-10 senior setter from Boerne (Champion). …Taliah Phipps, 5-7 sophomore setter from San Antonio (Brennan). …Courtney Rabius, 5-9 sophomore outside hitter from Cat Spring (Sealy). …Kelby Sprinkles, 5-9 sophomore outside hitter from Little River (Academy). …Alexis Wick, 6-2 senior middle blocker from Leander (Rouse). Faison and Wick were AllLone Star Conference first team last fall. The coaching staff also returns intact: Head coach Tanya Allen, assistant coaches Joe Morales and Gary Payne and graduate assistant coach Stephanie Johns. Among the alums expected to

return are middle blocker Ashley Bukowski, setter Sondra Cui, setter Sarah Fountain, outside hitter Bethany Friesenhahn, middle blocker Laura Macek, hitter Lisa O’Connor, middle blocker Whitney Roth, middle blocker Ashley Tipps and middle blocker Alex Wells. Middle blocker Johns is also expected to join the alums.

The Javelinas are preparing for their season opener Sept. 1 with New Mexico Highlands in San Angelo. They will take on Colorado Christian, Limestone (N.C.) and Highlands for a second time in the Angelo State meet. The Javelinas won’t open their home slate until Sept. 12 when they host St. Mary’s.

Javelina Club BBQ Saturday The annual Riviera Communications and Gulf Coast Broadband Javelina Club Barbecue and Auction is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the J.K. Northway Coliseum in Kingsville. The social and silent auction is set for 5:30, a barbecue dinner with all the trimmings is set for 6:30 and the athlete rally and live auction will start at 7 p.m.

A third Javelina in the Hall is the late Eugene Upshaw. Only two universities in Texas have had more inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame than the Javelinas.

JAVELINA DEFENSIVE LINEMAN Brandon Jones was named to the NCAA Division II preseason All-American second unit selected by Herosports.com. Two Lone Star Conference players, both from Texas A&MCommerce, were on the first unit: quarterback Luis Perez and offensive lineman Jared Machorro. Also on the first unit was linebacker Kevin Haynes of Central Washington. The Javelina offense will see Haynes in the Sept. 2 season opener between the Javelinas and Wildcats in Javelina Stadium.

FORMER JAVELINA BASKETBALL player Mike Webb is a new assistant superintendent in the Tomball Independent School District. Webb was with the Javelinas in 1995-98.

THE NCAA HAS adopted The Basketball Tournament’s postgame bracket celebration. After games, the winning team goes over to a giant replica of the tournament’s bracket. A member of the team moves a card with the team’s name ahead to the next round of the meet. David Worlock, the NCAA’s director of media coordination, said, “Yes, we’re doing it. I noticed in the tournament and like the idea. A few weeks ago, there was some chatter on Twitter from some of members of the media, saying they wished we would do it during our tournament. So I wasn’t the only person who thought it was a cool idea.” Worlock said the enlarged version of the NCAA tournament would most likely be located outside the post-game press conference area. ON SUNDAY, I begin my 50th year as a member of the Javelina athletic staff. My first day in Kingsville was Aug. 20, 1968. It has been an unbelievable period. My tenure with the Javelinas has carried me to five different countries, to most states in the U.S. including Hawaii, has allowed me to work with some of the greatest coaches and athletes in the history of college athletics, has afforded me the chance to cover some of the most successful teams in collegiate history, and has given me the opportunity to become friends with thousands of athletes, coaches and fans. One particular acquaintance was Joan Howe, who became my wife in 1969. The javelina has become my favorite animal. Blue and gold are my favorite colors. Jalisco is my favorite song. I don’t think there has ever been another athletic publicist who has been blessed with more than I’ve received in Kingsville. KEVIN HAYNES, 6-1, 228-pound linebacker at Central Washington, was picked as one of the top five NCAA Division II defensive players who have a chance at claiming the 2017 Harlon (Continued on Page 3) Hill Trophy.

LSC Baseball Playoffs Expand to Six The Lone Star Conference Presidents Council voted to expand the league baseball postseason playoff field to six teams beginning next spring. Only four have been involved the past several years. The playoffs will be single elimination instead of the double elimination format used with four teams participating. The top two teams in the final standings will receive first-round byes while No. 3 takes on No. 6 and No. 4 will play No. 5 in the opening round. The playoff winner receives the LSC’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division II national playoffs. Since starting its intercollegiate baseball program in 1993, Texas A&M-Kingsville has won conference championships in 1996, 1998, 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2015. The postseason playoffs were initiated in 2012 and the Javelinas won the title in 2013. Seven of the 10 LSC schools with men’s sports have baseball programs. These are Angelo State, Cameron, Eastern New Mexico, Tarleton State, Texas-Permian Basin, Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M. Midwestern State, Texas A&M-Commerce and Western New Mexico are conference members with men’s programs but do not have baseball teams.

(Continued from Page 2) The trophy goes to the DII player of the year and has gone to a defensive player only once. Haynes, from Battle Ground, Wash., has been a first-team AllGreat Northwest Athletic Conference player for three consecutive years and had 110 tackles for last season. Nineteen were for losses and he had four sacks. The Javelina offense will see Haynes in the Sept. 2 season opener when the Wildcats come to Javelina Stadium.

SPEAKING OF CENTRAL Washington, the Wildcat football team had to move its practices last weekend to Eastside Catholic High School in Sammamish, Wash., due to the unhealthy air quality in Ellensburg, where CWU is located. The poor air quality was caused by wildfires in British Columbia and in the Ellensburg area. Sammamish is 100 miles northwest of Ellensburg and a suburb of Seattle.

CENTRAL WASHINGTON WILL hold its second annual fan day Saturday in Ellensburg. Wildcat athletes and coaches from football, volleyball, women’s soccer, cross country and women’s rugby will meet and interact with fans. There will be a number of activities including tailgating games, poster giveaways, athlete autographs and photo opportunities.

THE JAVELINAS’ FIRST two games will be against teams from the Northwest. After hosting Central Washington on Sept. 2, the Javelinas will be in Burnaby, British Columbia, for the Sept. 9 contest. The three teams have somewhat different weather conditions as they prepare for their upcoming seasons. The temperature in Kingsville last week was 100 degrees. Ellensburg had a high of 79 Sunday but did have a temperature of 102 one day last week. Burnaby had a high of 69 Sunday.

ZACH PROSBA HAD a recent article on Herosports.com that ESPN College GameDay has become popular with college fans as it travels to sites each week. These trips are usually to NCAA Division I sites and never has it been to a Division II game. Prosba wrote that “we’d love to change that”. He created a theoretical Division II Football College GameDay schedule for the upcoming season and one of the sites he suggested the crew visit is Kingsville for the Sept. 23 matchup between the Javelinas and Texas A&M-Commerce. “Capitalizing big-time on the historical factor, Kingsville serve as a fantastic host for a D2 football GameDay with NFL connections,” Prosba wrote. “Over their program’s history, Hall of Famers such as Gene Upshaw and John Randle once donned the blue and yellow of Kingsville football.

(Continued from Page 3) “Nowadays, TAMU-K is still a national powerhouse with bigtime talent along the defensive line in Brandon Jones (who one day should be a pro player as well). With the combination of historical excellence with current success, the Javelinas would be an absolutely perfect host for a Lone Star Conference showdown in Texas”. Another game he proposed would be Texas A&M-Commerce’s opener with North Alabama in Florence, Ala. Simon Fraser is also recommended as a site when the Clan hosts Western Oregon Oct. 7. There is no other Canadian football team in NCAA and this would be unique. And for the season finale, he suggests the rivalry between Henderson (Ark.) State and Ouachita Baptist (Ark.). The Arkadelphia, Ark., schools are across the street from each other and you can hear the public address system at one of the stadiums while at the other’s. Not likely to happen but there is a world of outstanding football games and rivalries in college matchups other than in Division I.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE notes: …The Angelo State training staff was recognized by its peers as the Lone Star Conference Athletic Training Staff of the Year. The award was announced last week. …The LSC ranked fourth in men’s and women’s basketball attendance among NCAA Division II schools last winter. The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association led the men’s attendance, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference was second and the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association was third. The women’s conference attendance standings were the same as the men’s. In the men’s division, Tarleton State was 14th with an average of 1,527 a game and Midwestern State was 19th with 1,374 a game. The women’s division posted the top 10 schools in attendance and the LSC didn’t have a school in the listing. …Texas A&M-Commerce will hold its Lion Football Fan Day Saturday at Memorial Stadium. It affords the fans an opportunity to interact with the players. A scrimmage opens the day at 9 a.m. and those who have purchased season tickets will be able to sit in their selected seats. New season tickets will be available for purchase. NCAA Division II Presidents Council Supports Proposals

The NCAA Division II Presidents Council met last week to consider proposed legislation for the 2018 NCAA Convention and the division’s commitment to providing athletes a balanced college experience commanded much of the attention of the meeting. Two of the four proposals up for consideration focused on playing and practice season schedules. One would allow football teams to begin preseason practice three days earlier while the other would move up the start date for women’s volleyball by

one week in years in which the Division II National Champions Festival occurs in the fall. The council voted to sponsor the football proposal, citing it as a necessary adjustment after the NCAA eliminated two-a-day preseason practices last spring. The council voted not to sponsor the volleyball proposal but it will proceed to a membership vote at the convention. Some of the council members raised concerns about alterations to playing and practice schedules

for longer seasons and less time off for athletes. One member contended that the volleyball proposal could allow athletes to attend classes they might normally miss during Festival years by allowing teams to move a couple of weekday matches to the weekend. The most influential factor in the council’s affirmative vote for football was the health and safety impact of allowing football players more time to acclimate and prepare for the season, taking into account practices teams may have

recommended day off per week. The earlier start date was already made permissible for the 2017 preseason through a blanket waiver, and this legislation would codify the change for future years. Two other proposals received the council’s support. One would eliminate some restrictions on the types and increase amounts of athletics-related awards an athlete can receive and another would allow sports wagering violations to be received on a case-by-case basis. Currently, violations that

NCAA Division II’s Distinguished Dozens

1. Graduation rates. Division II’s student-athlete graduation rate is consistently higher than that of the total student body. Division II also features a high number of firstgeneration college students, thus increasing the access to education. 2. Academic emphasis. Division II’s regionalization philosophy in scheduling limits missed class time for studentathletes. 3. Athletics scholarships. The partial athletics scholarship model rewards athletics ability while

allowing student-athletes to earn other sources of financial aid. A recent study on the financial impact of the partial-scholarship model found that in general, scholarship student-athletes benefit institutions’ overall academic profile, and the partial-aid model generates revenue for the school. 4. Balanced bottom line. The median expense for Division II athletics departments with football is roughly $6 million, while that figure is about $15 million for

Division II membership is split almost evenly between public and private institutions. On average, Division II schools have the highest admission rate (70 percent, versus 62-63 percent in the other two divisions). 6. Community engagement. In addition, Division II conducts community engagement activities at all championships final sites. 7. Positive game environment. Division II members pledge to conduct athletics contests in a family-friendly environment that is civil and entertaining. 8. Unique geographical footprint. Division II is the only NCAA division with schools in Alaska (Anchorage and Fairbanks), Puerto Rico (Bayamon, Mayaguez and Rio Piedras) and Canada (Simon Fraser). 9. National championship opportunities. Division II features unparalleled opportunity for student-athletes to advance to national championship competition as a result of the division’s generous championship access ratios (the highest among the three NCAA divisions). 10. National Championships Festivals. Division II is the only NCAA division that conducts “National Championships Festivals,” Olympic-style events in which a number of national championships are held at a single site over a period of several days. 11. Make It Yours. This student-athlete-driven brand enhancement strengthens awareness among external audiences by clearly communicating the experience Division II schools create for student-athletes. 12. Diversity and inclusion. Matching grants encourage access, recruitment, selection, and the longterm success of ethnic minorities and women in administration and coaching.
