Volume 3, Issue 1 September 2016 UTEP Athletics seeks to enhance the student-athlete experience by providing opportunities to give back in the El Paso community. Miners Give Back (MGB) is a new UTEP Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) initiative supported by UTEP Athletics, which will give our studentathletes a greater understanding of the community and how they can make a difference. There will be designated times during the semester when student-athletes can donate to MGB. At the end of the semester, student-athletes will present the donations to a non-profit organization within the greater El Paso area chosen by the UTEP SAAC.

Junior track & field student-athlete, Tyler Ragin, represented UTEP from July 21-23 at the annual Conference USA SAAC meeting at the C-USA Headquarters in Irving, Texas. The aim of this meeting was to provide a forum for student-athletes to express ideas, concerns, and opinions relating to NCAA and Conference legislation as well as other issues that affect their welfare. Concluding the meeting, Tyler was also chosen to be one of the C-USA SAAC External Affairs Chair members. Thanks Tyler for positively representing UTEP and giving the UTEP athletes a voice!

Life Skills would like to welcome two former UTEP student-athletes to its staff this Fall. Anna-Kay James is a former Track & Field athlete who graduated this past May with a B.A. in Accounting. Tevin Caldwell is a former UTEP Basketball athlete who graduated in December 2015 with a degree in Multidisciplinary Studies. We’re looking forward to having them a part of the Life Skills team!

Q: What is your official title at UTEP and how long have you been working here? A: I am the Women’s Soccer First Assistant Coach and I have been working here since February of 2010. Q: Who is your favorite soccer player and why? A: I will have to say Wayne Rooney from Manchester United. He is tenacious and willing to do the hard work like sprinting 60 yards to save a goal. Q: Who or what inspired you to get into coaching? A: I’m going to give credit to Kevin (Head Soccer Coach) and my dad. My dad was my high school and club coach for quite a few years. He and Kevin were the ones that planted the seed of coaching into me by suggesting it to me. Q: If you could read minds, whose would you want to read? A: I’d probably pick someone related to my field, so like Alex Ferguson who coached Manchester United. I would pick apart their brain and see how they coached for so many years. Q: If you could be any age for a week, what age would it be?

A: I’d go back to being a kid for a week, like ages 8-12. You don’t have any responsibilities and you just get to have fun and not worry about big problems. Q: What is your favorite word? Or phrase? A: The girls would say it is, “does that make sense?”, because I ask that all the time when I am coaching!

Set them free. Listen actively. Curb your enthusiasm. Build your resilience. Page 2
