Volunteer Opportunities with Cornell Cooperative Extension Community Horticulture Master Gardener Volunteers: Master Gardener Volunteers complete a 14 session training course sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County. Master Gardener Volunteers assist with and deliver horticulture education programs and community workshops on subjects that include composting, growing vegetables, pruning, environmental lawn care, gardening in the shade, and more. Our Master Gardener Plant Sale, held annually in the spring, is a unique fundraiser and a favorite of residents throughout the area. Through our MG Helpline, the Master Gardener Volunteers help diagnose plant problems, identify insects, and provide research-based advice to homeowners. We also provide outreach to the community through MG Speakers' Bureau, information tables at community events, and support for community and school gardens.

Demonstration Garden Volunteers: For those that would like to help maintain our demonstration gardens, but aren't able to make the commitment to become a Master Gardener Volunteer. Our demo garden helpers work alongside MG volunteers during the growing season. Tasks include planting, mulching, weeding, pruning, edging, staking, and cleanup.

Agriculture & Food Systems Master Food Preserver Volunteers: Volunteers must complete a 3day intensive training and are needed to provide support for a wide variety of tasks related to educational outreach on food preservation. May assist with Catskills Kitchen events and programs. Volunteers may provide docent services and assist staff with educational programs at the CCE Education Center and community partner locations. Volunteers are also needed to help with administrative and promotional activities.

4-H Youth Development

4-H Club Organizational Leader:

4-H Public Presentations Evaluator:

Adults who are organized and enjoy working with children between the ages of 5-19, may consider serving as a 4-H club leader. The club leader typically plans the club’s activities for the upcoming year, serves as liaison with the CCE office, involves parents and keeps them informed about county programs and events, encourages member and parent participation in local 4-H activities, and attends regular trainings. 4-H clubs should have more than one leader. The role of an organizational leader is typically a long-term position, lasting a year or more.

4-H Public Presentations provides a unique opportunity for youth to develop self-confidence, learn to express ideas clearly, respond spontaneously to questions, and gain subject matter knowledge through a progressive series of communication activities. Adult volunteers are needed to help evaluate youth presentations. Training is provided.

4-H Project Leader: Project leaders often serve on a short-term basis to assist one or more 4-H clubs with a specific subject matter and/or provide a special interest program focusing on a specific skill or subject. For those volunteers who have a talent or skill to share, but have limited time, serving as a 4-H project leader is a great opportunity.

4-H Support Volunteer: Parents and community members are needed for a variety of program support positions including but not limited to: * Event Chaperones * Grant Writing / Fundraising * Office Support / Administrative

4-H Fundraising:

An opportunity to support

4-H and CCE through short-term volunteering. Individuals are needed to help plan and execute individual fundraising activities. This could involve a one-time commitment or an opportunity for longer involvement.

4-H Fair Judge: Adults are always needed to serve as evaluators at the Youth Fair and other events. Volunteer judges should be skilled in the subject matter that they are evaluating, able to effectively communicate with children, and understand the 4-H philosophy and the Danish System of recognition.

4-H After School: Help to engage youth in an after school setting using university-sourced curricula to promote positive youth development.
