VOLUNTOURISM PROJECT ONGULA – YA- NETANGA NAME: This place was a forest inhabited, the nearest settled village was Omapumba from Ongula. There was a man called Netanga who used to travel every morning from Omapumba to look for water.

At dawn, Netanga would always travel into the forest,

he discovered a place where he dug a well and found water.

Every now and then his

fellow villagers use to say: Netanga with his dawn, where did he go. After he discovered water, many people settled at this place and the Chief of the area named the Place Ongula Ya- Netanga meaning the Dawn of Netanga recounting the early hours Netanga use to travel and the success that has brought in discovering water. That well has been the one supplying all the villagers with water until 2011 when the government installed water pipe.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT Join us at Ongula Village Homestead Lodge for your volunteer program, has been in existence since 2012. Ongula Village Homestead Lodge strategically situated between Ondangwa (one of the oldest towns in the northern region) and Eenhana, built alongside an active Owambo Homestead (or Village). Ongula Village Homestead Lodge situated in the heart of Owambo North of world famous Etosha National Park offers you the perfect add-on to your classic Namibia journey.

!1

It is the first lodge in Namibia to offer an introduction to the traditional lifestyle of our Owambo people. In the village, close to the lodge, we have two schools with children who need an extensive help in English in order to be enrolled in universities across the globe. These children also need help in Mathematics, and computers.

As part of Ongula social responsibility, we do support communities; initiates or provides the necessary foundation to the future leaders of tomorrow. We support an initiative of the Queen of Oukwanyama Traditional Authority, the Queen’s Community Kindegarten.

OPTIONS FOR VOLUNTEERS The options range from teaching to English proficiency, life skills, creative arts and computer literacy lessons. You can choose to either focus on one or two, or even combine all in order to broaden your volunteer experience.

Queen Mwadinomho’s Community Kindergarten

!3

The Queen’s Community Kindergarten accommodates close to 40 kids over and above the 20 kids that lives in the homestead. The Queen of Oukwanyama Traditional Authority made a call to the public not to dumb babies but to bring them to her house for shelter. Since then, a lot of young women visit the house for social assistance with the kids. Volunteers will have the opportunity to visit the queen’s kindergarten and help in playing with the kids, helping them with all the love and care they need, educate them too. This program is continuous through out the year during the day.

!4

The government of Namibia has prioritised the early childhood development as an important foundation for every Namibian child. The community is trying to complement government by establishing private early childhood centres. Many of the centres are just playing centres or a place where kids are given an opportunity to develop their skills. The managing of private run early childhood centres lack the basic educational materials. Ongula in partnership with the queen’s community kindergarten is to coordinate or welcome any donations, especially in kind, such as reading and playing materials.

!5

Life Skills Education Rural young women out of school needs to engange in some life skill lessons or just spend time learning about HIV/AIDS and how to live positively or Breast Cancer awareness. This will also help in keeping them away from alcohol or getting in any troubles or crime. We will also do various exchange visits to other similar community projects in other communities to boost confidence in them.

Teaching The aim of the Ongula Volunteers’ teaching project is to educate, support and empower the disadvantaged children and youth through a sustainable approach to community development.
