Our National Youth Gathering Participants are about to embark on a great journey where they will gather with 25,000 other people who will together confess in Christ alone we stand. St. John’s is sending 13 teens and 5 adults to New Orleans, Louisiana for the LCMS National Youth Gathering. There they will spend five days in worship, spiritual and personal growth, meeting new people, experiencing new things, serving in the city, and celebrating faith in Jesus Christ. What a great crowd of witnesses they will be throughout the streets of New Orleans! We thank you for your support and request your prayers for this amazing week. {SJLC@8:30} “Joining Jesus in Luke” (Fellowship Hall) Worship Service with Holy Communion SEELM Choir Rehearsal (304) Missional Community (Library) SEELM Worship (307/309) SEELM Fellowship (Fellowship Hall)

Today at St. John’s Summer Sunday Mornings at St. John’s Through the months of July and August, St. John’s will offer a combined Sunday morning worship service at 9:30AM. This will be the only service on Sunday mornings during these two months, preceded by a learning time from 8:30–9:15AM in the Fellowship Hall. Summer preaching and learning will focus on the appointed Gospel lessons from Luke with connections to the 5 mission practices from Joining Jesus on His Mission. The weekly 5PM Saturday evening JOY! service will continue to be held with Holy Communion being celebrated on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. We will return to two services on Sunday mornings on Sunday, September 4 (Labor Day weekend). West Virginia Needs A Flood of Generosity We lift up in prayer our neighbors in West Virginia who are living with the realities of devastation and turmoil in their lives, and we pray for the mercy of God to comfort and sustain them. We also remember those who are the first responders that they are moved to compassion and gentleness as they serve in this time of great need. The Ohio District is coordinating the LCMS Disaster Response in West Virginia (https:// www.facebook.com/ohiodistrict/). Questions can be directed to the coordinator, Mary Woodward Bates, at 740-732-6700. Donations can be made to the Ohio District, West Virginia Flood Response 2016 at 810 Main Street, Caldwell, Ohio, 43724.

Gather Wanted! Knitters to make small and simple projects for sale at this year’s annual craft fair. Yarn will be supplied. If you can help, please contact Barbara Wright ([email protected], 703-971-5776). Thank you. Summer Greeters Just a reminder that the July and August Greeter needs are posted in CCB. Please note that there is significant urgency for the month of July as most slots remain open. If you know you will be attending one of the services this month, please consider greeting. If you are not familiar with CCB, or are not using it, that is fine. Just let me know when you are available to greet and I can "assign" you to greet on a specified day if a need exists. If you have any further questions, or perhaps are interested in being added to the greeter roster, please let me know ([email protected]). Regina Mayhew, Greeter Coordinator Praying in Color Come and join us in the Library for a restful and quiet time of prayer on Saturday morning, July 16. The beauty of the prayer garden surrounds us as we listen and pray with pens, pencils, and colors in hand, putting prayers to paper. It’s not art but it is prayer so no skills needed, just a desire to pray. If you’ve not tried this form of prayer before, please arrive at 9:30AM for an orientation. Our hour of prayer begins at 10AM. We hope you will join us. Missionary Family at St. John’s July 23-24 We welcome Matt & Dee Dee Wasmund and their daughters, Lily and Olivia, LCMS missionaries in East Asia who serve in Seoul, Korea! They will be with us at worship services on Saturday and Sunday, July 23-24, and will lead the Bible class on Sunday morning, July 24, from 8:30 – 9:15AM, sharing what the Lord is doing among them. Members of St. John’s will hear about their ministry and have opportunity to help support them. The Wasmunds are friends of Adam & Rachel Dancy and son, Andrew, and we look forward to their visit. Altar Flowers beautify the Sanctuary and honor or remember loved ones. You may make a contribution to the flower fund, or pay for an entire arrangement and take the flowers home following the Sunday morning late service. Up to three (3) arrangements may be placed for a given weekend. Please sign up 2 weeks in advance so the recognition can appear in the worship bulletin. Donations and electronic payment can now be made via CCB, through St. John’s website: www.sjlc.com/Gather, or using the QR Code pictured here. A sign-up is also available at the Welcome Center. Thank you. Farewell and Godspeed As the summer season begins, many people relocate and move to new areas. St. John’s is committed not only to welcoming new members among us, but also to bidding farewell and Godspeed to those members who are leaving our fellowship and moving to other places. In a brief ceremony in the worship service, we send them forth in mission to their new home and church home. If you are

relocating, please alert the Church Office ([email protected], 703-9712210). Worship While on Vacation While traveling near or far this summer, be sure to worship with fellow Christians wherever you may be. Should you worship with another faith tradition, observe what is different and what is similar to our own worship patterns as these give glory and praise to our triune God. Bring a bulletin back and post in the Narthex. Go to The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) website to find another sister congregation near to where you’ll be vacationing (www.lcms.org, select “find a church”). Mark Your Calendar for National Night Out on August 2 Plan to spend Tuesday evening, August 2, at St. John’s as our congregation hosts a National Night Out for our neighborhood. Food trucks will be on site and various activities are planned including an outdoor concert by John Wright and his brass ensemble. This is a great opportunity for us to become better acquainted with the neighbors who live around our church as we seek to join Jesus on his mission. Watch for more detailed information in the weeks ahead and we’ll see you on Tuesday, August 2 for National Night Out!

Manage Summer Tithes and Offerings As we enter into the summer season when many people travel and are on vacation, please ensure that your tithes and offerings for the ministry and mission of our congregation continue while you are away. You may also want to consider electronic funds transfer which allows your contributions to take place automatically weekly, monthly, or on whatever frequency you choose. If you’d like more information about how this might work for your household, please contact Terri Robbins, St. John’s Financial Administrator ([email protected]), 703-971-2210) or Greg Auld, St. John’s Minister of Finance ([email protected], 703-780-6538).

Invite Koinonia Food Pantry School is out for the summer and children who get reduced priced lunches from school are at home. Families who rely on those lunches to supplement their food supply will need to find another source and so our food pantry will receive more requests. With that in mind, we’d appreciate your help stocking our food pantry to meet the additional need. Thank you.        

Refugee Family Sponsorship Update At the congregational meeting on June 5, SJLC voted to enter a co-sponsorship of a refugee family with Lutheran Social Services, National Capitol Area (LSS/NCA). We have submitted our intention to co-sponsor to LSS/NCA. The next step is to identify and train volunteers who will be working with the family. We are hoping to hold a training session lead by the LSS/ NCA staff sometime in July. If you plan on volunteering directly with the family after they arrive this fall, please fill out the form located in CCB or contact Diane Brody ([email protected]) to select the team(s) on which you are willing to serve. We will then come up with a date that suits the most people for training. Thank you.  Welcome Team: organize welcome activities, help the family with language skills, and assimilate into American culture and our community, friendship.  Transportation and Logistics Team: transportation liaisons for school, medical appointments. etc.  House and Furnishing Team: secure apartment, household goods, food, clothes, etc.  Finance Team: secure rent by organizing financial donations, planning, fundraising if needed, and counsel the family on financial matters.
