.............. Painting Made Easy Program You will find that the canvas reflects back to you lessons that you now get to learn in order to have more creative freedom in the art that is your life.
ALL YOU NEED for the Program Yu can go to your local art store for the following:
A canvas or canvas board (size is 9" x 12" or bigger), a set of acrylic paints (five colors: red, yellow, blue, white, & black-ask at the store for the best mixing colors), a paint brush (more below about paint brushes), water container (I use my old yogurt containers or a jar), paper plates for palettes, & paper towels.
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
.............. Brushes I am NOT a picky brush person. You just need a synthetic brush that is a good all around brush or an acrylic brush. Watercolor brushes are "floppier" and oil painting brushes are very stiff. We need our brushes to be right in the middle. There are round and flat brushes. I use both, or whatever is handy. I would get a size 10 & 6 or 8 & 4. Your friendly folks at the art store should be able to help you.

.............. I have been teaching this class since 2002! Anyone can paint.
I am so excited to be able to share it with you through the Creatively Fit Program. Since we can't be together, you will receive an invite shortly to join our Creatively Fit Community on our own special site at www.WhitneyFreya.com/nexus. Simply follow the direction on the site and meet other creative souls and see their creative "exercises". Get the things together you need, and get excited to START painting!

We are going to paint with ACRYLIC PAINTS. These are water based, so they clean up with water and DRY very quickly--this makes it EASIER! This week, we are going to mix colors together. All you are going to do this week is paint colors on your canvas. We are not going to worry about lines, designs, or any of that for now. I want you to experience mixing colors. The colors we use are cool to make purple),
red (if you get cadmium red it will have too much yellow in it
white, cobalt blue, and cool yellow. There is also a black in
the kit. If you have the Create Change Paint Kit from www.creativelyfit.com GREAT! If you have your own paints, or are getting some at your own art store, ask them for the best, value-priced, mixing colors.

.............. First Step
Put a nickel size blob of each color of paint on a paper plate or other palette.
Paint red on your canvas. Clean your brush and mix some yellow and blue together to make a green.
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
.............. Paint that green on your canvas. As the green runs out of your brush onto the canvas, mix it into the red on your canvas and watch the red change.
Now, let’s do the same with yellow and purple, blue and orange. You don’t have to do this in one sitting. Maybe now you just have time to do the red and green.
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
.............. Tomorrow can be purple/yellow day. Just let it settle into your schedule, BUT set the intention to mix all these colors onto your canvas this week.
The palette can get messy. It's ok. Start a new plate if necessary.
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
.............. You can be done at this point. The "blank canvas" is gone. Next week we will outline! Keep painting on this canvas throughout the week if you can. Just play. Observe how relaxed you are after you paint!
Here is my canvas after I played on it a little more.

.............. ! There are really no mistakes. In this program, I will give you enough structure that you will always know what to do next. Then, as you become more comfortable, you will start "breaking the rules", trying new ways. For now, just let yourself build up some experience. Painting and art is about the only thing we expect to be GOOD at right away, or we should not even bother.
You would have to start weeks in advance, to build your strength and stamina. It is the same with getting Creatively Fit and learning to paint. Give yourself the time to learn, to stretch out these under-used mental muscles. It's ok to feel awkward. That is natural when something is new. Accept the awkwardness and then you can get to the fun parts! We will send you an email on Monday to inspire your creativity throughout the week.

.............. YOU are both the ART & the ARTIST! Taking back our role as the creator of our lives is why we paint. With our new "artist mentality" we access our own creative ability to CREATE the life we desire. I have been listening to Michael Beckwith's "Life Visioning Process". In it he talks about how we are "surrounded by perfect ideas" and that "we create our own environment". Another favorite of mine is Deepak Chopra's The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. The first law of "Pure Potentiality" talks about how to access the "infinite creativity" by practicing "nonjudgment" & creating stillness or quiet. When you PAINT, you get into your right hemisphere (where judgment does not exist) and you leave behind the verbal (left

brain), busy to-do list voice.
In the book, Evolve Your Brain, by Joe Dispenza, he sites scientific brain research that shows that ANY time we do ANYTHING new that our right brains are what light up on the screen. So if you want to create newness it is dependent on your right brain function. Get it "Creatively Fit" and you increase your ability to learn, process, innovate NEW skills & information. My new friend ChristineRanck is the co-author of Ignite the Genius Within, with Michael Gelb. I was just on her website the other day and read, again, how the mind does not know the difference between REAL & IMAGINED events. She said that in a study people who simply imagined their muscle strength increasing did so almost as much as the group that was actually working out!
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
.............. SO, we paint to get CREATIVELY FIT and we want to be CREATIVELY FIT so that we can harness all of the potential within our minds (which leads to its connection to the greater space outside of our minds...)!
This Week's Activity Keep adding colors to your canvas. Start another canvas by painting in lots of color. Notice how the colors blend and mix to create new colors. Remember the opposite colors:
RED/GREEN
PURPLE/YELLOW
ORANGE/BLUE
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
.............. Look for these opposite colors wherever you go. Start to notice the art all around you. Notice where you can ADD some color to a situation. CREATE an awareness of what happens when you walk into a room. CREATE good things.
It is just like putting a brush to the canvas...every action you take is a mark in the art that is your life!
Next we explore the OUTLINE. For now, simply think of colors. Paint them.

.............. Outline Our Design ALL we have to do is define what it is we are going to paint. We are going to make it EASY! We outline all in the SAME color so that we are creating UNITY in our painting. UNITY is one of the Principles of Design. Our mind's eye LIKES unity. It likes for things to be in the proper place. If something is out of place, it could mean danger, that something is wrong or won't work right. We subconsciously react to UNITY, or disunity. You will notice this, among many other things, as you learn to paint.
I LOVE this owl! You will see him progress Get out a PAINT BRUSH! Any one will do! in the weeks ahead. On this canvas, I just Check if you are getting nervous. Remind painted the entire background one shade yourself that you are just LEARNING. Give of yellow (it was house paint, actually), yourself a break and just experience painting. There are FLAT and ROUND outlined first in a light yellow, like a pencil brushes. All you really need is a entry level sketch, and finished the outline with "acrylic" paint brush. black.

..............
The "vase of flowers" is always a good This is to show you that you can outline standby. If you are nervous about your design with any color AND you can "drawing", put the paint brush in your paint right over another painting. This "other" hand (left hand if you are right painting is an example from the Creatively handed). Then, you have REALLY taken Fit Marathon. We paint 26 paintings yourself off the hook. I think I painted this (instead of running 26 miles) over AND one with my left hand. over the SAME canvas! So, as you are painting now, if you outline something and you really hate it, just paint over it and do it again! Nothing is permanent.
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
.............. Here you see my kitchen table as a group of friends and I sipped some wine and painted from the UNITY Create Change Paint Kit. Such a FUN night with friends. We kept it simple with yellow and green. The paint kits come with two canvas boards, on already has the outline on it. So it is SUPER easy! You can download the wine tasting notes and order a paint kit at creativelyfit.com.
Recognize this canvas? This is from last week, when we painted the background. If you have your own design, great! All we have to do is outline. Notice, on all of these designs, that the outline goes all the way to the edge of the canvas. There is nothing centered and small in the center of the canvas. This makes it SO MUCH easier to paint in the following steps. If you are making your own design, make sure it touches the edges. Think stain glass.
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
.............. Also notice with these two designs that the center of the "flower" is not in the exact center of the canvas. In art, symmetry can be boring, so I always try to offset my designs a bit.

.............. Color In Your Outlined Design It is just like a coloring book now. See how if you break it down, step-by-step, big goals get easier. This week you get to see how the layers of color make your painting more and more interesting.
We are going to make it EASY! http://tinyurl.com/PMEthree
Let's Start All you need is to have your canvas with the first layer, base coat, and the outline of your design. Get your paints, a palette (or paper plate), brushes, water & paper towels. THIS WEEK mixing colors is going to be a big thing. MIXING colors does not come easily for most people. But if you accept that it is going to be a learning process then you are free to learn, make mistakes, and LEARN!
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
..............
Remember to HAVE FUN! This is the step we are going to do this week. Maybe you have two paintings You are simply taking an online class called Painting Made Easy. We are not going? The more you paint, the better you going to find a new energy source or get. It is just like ANYTHING else! Give cure world hunger. So, take the yourself the opportunity to learn. pressure off. Relax!
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
..............
See how the green, towards the top, looks darker? That has RED in it! You orange~blue red~green can't play around with mixing colors purple~yellow enough. Stay in "learning When you mix them together, in equal parts, you get MUD. When you mode" this week as you add the next layer, and experiment with how add just a tid-bit to the other you colors mix together. get EARTHY colors OR the color of SHADOW!
Opposite Colors are KEY!
NOW we are going to pick up where we left off last week with our "floral" painting!
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
.............. Now We Are Just Painting In The Colors
Someone told me once to never use a color straight from the tube. Add a little something to it to make it yours!
In this layer, we are not committing to a final color palette. You don't have to worry about finding the perfect color right off the bat. That wouldn't be any fun or bring any CONTRAST/excitement to the painting. The more you hate the colors now, in the end, the more fabulous of a painting you will have.
It is the LAYERS that make us "look good". So, pick a color, add a little white and, maybe, another little bit of color (here I did blue with a little white and yellow).
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
.............. REPEAT Your Colors!!!
This will also create UNITY in your paintings! See how in the previous image I repeated the blue. Now I am repeating the red and orange. If I paint a color one place, I have to paint it in another place. ALSO, notice the different shades of colors in the red/orange petals. Students ask me all the time, "what if I can't mix that same color again?" I say, "Perfect! We don't want that same color over and over."
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
..............
I painted the entire background that I decided I did not want the green. same blue and then, added different This image is to give you a peek ahead shades of green. I also added some to the final layers next week, but I green into the red petals, knowing wanted you to see that you can that I am going to paint over them. TOTALLY change colors. In this step this week, don't worry about if you LET ME BUST A MYTH... end up with colors you don't like. We will change them! Most artists do not know exactly PAINT TO RELAX... what color or even WHAT they are going to paint when they start. They let one step lead to another.
Not relaxed, who are you trying to impress? You don't have to impress anyone. Just keep painting.
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
..............
I had another canvas with the same floral type design but, frankly, I was not so excited about painting another one. SO, I decided to paint one of my "Artist Within" paintings. See her emerging? I just painted right over the previous design. This is another example of how we paint the 26 paintings in the CREATIVELY FIT MARATHON! IT is SO fun! That is a GREAT program to join after this Painting Made Easy Program.
Now I am doing the same thing with this lucky lady! I am just painting in the shapes created by my outline. I had some of that pink'ish color left over and that gold, so I started filing her in. I think I am going to go ahead and let the floral design underneath help me to divide up the space in her face. See, everything works out perfectly.
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
..............
Remember this lovely lady? I think of these as my "Artist Within" series. I love painting these women's faces. This was the demo for this online class that I decided to paint over. See that white line under her right eye (your right)? That is still the outline of the flower--if helped me to divide up the space. So...a "mistake" helped my image to be successful in the end. Hmmm...it's just like life. See how that works?
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
.............. Here is another one. Look at the image below, see the green?
The green is what finished this painting for me. The green was part of that first layer. I saw it peeking through towards the end of this painting and I thought, "I need some of that green back up to the front!" Ah -hah!
As you go through your life (your ART) this week, think of the experiences as layers of paint. It looks completely different from that perspective! So It is with life, again. I often find looking back to the foundation or the source helps me move forward. It is one of those moments when you think, "Oh, that's right! THAT is why I
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
.............. started this in the first place." So looking back can often help us to move forward.
GET OUT your paints and GET painting! Have FUN! Don't STRESS about your painting. It is JUST a painting!
Woo-hoo! I heard that it is physiologically impossible to stay serious or stressed if you simply utter the words, "woo-hoo". Try it as you are painting if you start to take yourself too seriously! That, or put on some Bob Marley!
Paint on!

.............. Painting As Metaphor for Creating Change In this program you are learning a simple "layering" painting technique, how to mix colors, how to plan a successful design, and how PAINTING is a metaphor for creating change in the art that is our life! This is going to be the last layer on your painting. Layer one-background and outline Layer two-coloring in the outlined spaces Layer three-final color scheme and details
This is where we get to add fun details, different shades of color and thick layers of paint! http://tinyurl.com/PME-4four

Our friendly owl here went from all warm colors (reds, yellows, oranges) to this final version with blues and greens added. Notice things like: the right wing and eye area have more blues/greens added than the left side AND the belly area has different detail added to the bottom left than the top right. In the last step, we just focused on layering the paint on into the different outlined spaces and NOW we want each of those individual. spaces to have a variety of colors, texture, etc. This makes each space INTERESTING.
w w w .w h i t n e y f r e y a . c o m
..............
This vase of flowers does not have quite as much going on. See how it is not AS interesting as Mr. owl? There is a variation in the shades of purple and orange-just not as dramatic. DO NOTICE the blue peeking through the petals and the yellow peeking through the vase and table. EVERY LAYER counts! As we paint, we let the previous layers show through--we do not paint, paint, paint until everything is completely covered. This happens naturally as your brush runs out of paint. Let that happen. Practice.

From now on...you are BOTH the ART and the ARTIST!
