Downtown Chic on the Upper West Side Price: $980,000 Location: New York, NY Type of Home: Apartment A fashion designer brought a mix of North African style and antiquing to bear on this one-bedroom apartment.
The owner, Dana Arbib, 32, a fashion designer, moved into this one-bedroom apartment on New York's Upper West Side in 2008, after a yearlong renovation process. 'A lot of apartments really have strange layouts,' Ms. Arbib said, but this space gave her a clean canvas to work with. The loft-like kitchen and living area, with built-in bookcases, is shown.
Her family purchased the apartment in 2007 for $770,000; she took ownership the following year, according to public records. Ms. Arbib is the co-founder of A Peace Treaty, a fashion-accessories collection that sells fair-trade apparel. As with her line of accessories, she says she brings a mix of cultures and aesthetics to her home.
The entryway is shown. Ms. Arbib said she was going for 'a kind of French-Moroccan vibe' for the space. Maintaining some of the apartment's original charms was also important. The apartment measures about 768 square feet.
Ms. Arbib said she restored the original flooring in the home. During a gut renovation of the kitchen, she replaced the flooring with nearly identical wood from a neighbor's apartment. The living area is shown. Ms. Arbib estimates putting $100,000 into the renovation, which involved replacing most of the kitchen and bathroom.
Ms. Arbib redecorated the apartment with interior designer Lauren Stern. 'Almost every single thing in that apartment has a story,' Ms. Stern said about the assortment of antique and reclaimed items in the home. Lighting fixtures from a ship, seen here, were installed in the kitchen. A portrait of a girl holding a pig hangs above the stove, because 'I don't eat pork, so I thought it would be funny,' Ms. Arbib said.
The bedroom is pictured. Ms. Arbib found the intricate chandelier above the bed while searching online. It is a replica of a Paul Evans piece, she said. 'I wanted the original one but it was too expensive, so I Google-alerted myself with the guy's name.' The search turned up this replica piece. Some of the furnishings in the home may be included in the sale, but she says she won't part with this light.
All the lighting fixtures in the home are brass, Ms. Arbib said. The bathroom features subway-style tile. Ms. Arbib said she's selling to move to Chinatown in Manhattan. However, she says she'll miss how much more laid back the Upper West Side is compared with fashion-conscious downtown. 'Uptown you could walk around in your pajamas and nobody really cares,' she joked.
The bathroom doorknob is shown here. The apartment was listed in December for $980,000 with Mary Ellen Cashman of Stribling & Associates.
