Sweet Upper East Side Duplex By Stefanos Chen
Price: $4,995,000 Location: New York, NY Type of Home: Apartment This 4,400-square-foot condo on the Upper East Side was tricked out by its owner, a candy store founder, with lavish amenities and a master bathroom with two of everything.
Mark Tarnofsky and his wife Sarah, both 50 years old, bought this 4,400-square-foot Upper East Side apartment for $3.25 million in 2009, according to public records. Mr. Tarnofsky, the founder of Campus Candy, a candy-store chain, said he fell in love with the apartment's tall ceilings and 'the sickest amenities' he'd ever seen. Photo: Juris Mardwig
The building, which dates back to 1917 as a five-story parking garage, was converted for condo use in 2007, according to public records. Everything in the home is 'brand new,' Mr. Tarnofsky said. The living room with a wood-burning fireplace and 14-foot ceilings is shown here. Photo: Juris Mardwig
The lower level of the duplex features a bar and entertainment area, shown here, as well as a recreation room and a mediascreening room. It also hides a welcome addition for any apartment-dwelling New Yorker: a full laundry room with washer and dryer. Photo: Juris Mardwig
The home includes two bedrooms and 3 ½ baths. The master bedroom has direct access to a terrace, where Mr. Tarnofsky said he enjoys reading the paper when the weather is nice. All owners in the building have shared access to a roof terrace and a private gym. Photo: Juris Mardwig
The 'sickest feature' of all, Mr. Tarnofsky said, is the bathroom amenities. The master bathroom includes his and her everything, he said: two sinks, two toilets, a soaking tub for two and 10 shower heads between two showers. The bathrooms, as with most every other room in the house, is also wired with surround sound speakers. 'It's unreal,' he said. Photo: Juris Mardwig
Ms. Tarnofsky's favorite room in the home is the kitchen, which extends the twin appliance theme. It features a double sink and two ovens. 'It's like double trouble,' he said. Photo: Juris Mardwig
The downstairs media room features a 120-inch screen flanked by two 60-inch screens on either side. 'I'm a real sports lunatic,' Mr. Tarnofsky said of his Sunday football ritual. Ms. Tarnofsky, on the other hand, reserves the room for Oscars and Grammy parties. The home is not being sold furnished, but Mr. Tarnofsky said the electronics will stay with the property. With two children in college, the couple is looking to downsize. The home was listed in October 2011 for $5.4 million with another brokerage. It was re-listed in April for $4.995 with Patricia Weeks of Stribling.
