Wallyball Rules ASBURY UNIVERSITY Rules and regulations published in the​ Asbury University Intramural Sports Handbook​ will be the governing policies for all intramural sports. Highlights of those rules and regulations are presented below alongside the sport rules. Team captains are responsible for possessing a thorough understanding of these regulations and their implications. The IM officials/supervisors will have absolute control of the game. Teams are responsible for keeping their players and spectators under control. Misconduct of players, coaches, or spectators, can result in assessment of a penalty, ejection or forfeiture of the game. Spectators must also remain in the area designated by the IM staff. The supervisors will have the power to make decisions on any matter or questions not specifically covered in the rules. I.​ TEAM ​ 1. Player Eligibility- ​ All Asbury University and Asbury Seminary students enrolled for at least three semester hours and their spouses, faculty and staff of Asbury University and Asbury Seminary and their spouses, and alumni shall be eligible to participate in any activity promoted by the Office of Intramurals. Additional information regarding participant eligibility can be found in the Intramural Handbook. Requests for exceptions to any policy must be directed to the IM Staff by emailing [email protected] 2. Team composition-​ The game shall be played between 2 teams of 4 players each. Each team must have a minimum of three (3) players and both genders represented in order to begin a game and avoid a forfeit. 3. Collegiate Athletes- ​ there will be a maximum of two (2) collegiate volleyball players on each registered team o Collegiate athletes are defined as any intramural eligible individual whose name appear(red) on an official collegiate team roster for a given academic year or have conditioned and/or practiced with a collegiate team with the intent to participate with that team. These also include players who are classified as junior varsity, ineligible, walk-ons, red-shirts. II. PLAYING WITH CHARACTER 1. Self Refereeing: ​ Players are responsible for their own fouls & line calls. Players should attempt to resolve their own disputes with team Captains. Further disputes should be brought to the Intramural Coordinator by the Captains. 2. Verbal Conduct: ​ The use of profane language directed to one’s self or another will not be tolerated. Arguing with a staff member or player in an unsportsmanlike manner will not be tolerated. Failure to abide by this rule will result in consequences 3. Ejections: ​ A player that was ejected from a game shall not participate in that game again. The intramural coordinator may eject a player from the court area if deemed necessary. If ejected from the area of play, the player shall leave within 2 minutes. Failure to do so will result in the player’s team to forfeit the game. An ejected player is automatically disqualified from ALL intramural sports until they meet with the Director of Intramurals.

4. SPORTSMANSHIP- ​ In order to cultivate an atmosphere of strong character amidst competition, each team will be given a sportsmanship score for each contest. Team sportsmanship is graded following each contest according to the following scale and criteria: ● "5" points: Excellent Sportsmanship- Players cooperate fully with the officials about rule interpretations and calls. The captain also has full control of his/her teammates. Team members and spectators were respectful of opponents and officials and encouraged each other’s efforts. At no time was this team disrespectful towards participants or officials. ● "4" points: Acceptable Sportsmanship- Team members and spectators are respectful of opponents and officials except for one or two minor incidents which may or may not merit a warning from the game officials or supervisor. ● "3" points: Sportsmanship Needs Improvement - Team members or spectators are disrespectful of opponents or officials on a number of occasions which may or may not warrant a penalty. Captain exhibits minor control over his/herself and his/her teammates and spectators. Teams receiving multiple warnings or having a player ejected for an unsportsmanlike act should receive no higher than a "3" rating. ● “2” points: Unacceptable Sportsmanship- Teams constantly comment to the officials and/or opposing teams from the field and/or sidelines. The team captain exhibits little or no control over teammates or himself/herself. Majority of individuals on this team are disrespectful of opponents or officials on a regular basis. ● "1" point: Season Ending Rating- The following actions can result in an “1” sportsmanship rating: Team is completely uncooperative and out of control before, during, or after intramural contest. Team captain exhibits poor control over self, the team, and/or the spectators. Multiple ejections or blatant unsportsmanlike conduct that endangered participants, fans, officials, or supervisors. Team fails to cooperate / comply with intramural sports administrative staff / University officials while performing their duties; falsely represents or withholds any requested information. Teams which receive an “1” rating are subject to immediate dismissal from league or tournament play. III. PLAYOFFS​ -​ In order to be seeded for playoffs a team must meet two requirements: achieve a winning percentage of .500 (win half of scheduled games) and achieve an average sportsmanship score of at least 4. IV.​ U​ ​ NIFORM 1. Attire: ​ Participants must adhere to the Luce Center policies regarding appropriateness of dress. 2. Shoes:​ Participants must wear shoes at all times. Athletic shoes are recommended. Sandals, cleats, combat boots, five-finger shoes, and hiking boots are prohibited. 3. Jewelry:​ Participants are not permitted to wear any visible jewelry. This includes watches, earrings, bracelets, etc. V. COURT BOUNDARIES AND EQUIPMENT 1. Net: ​ The net shall be 3' wide overall and not to exceed 18' when stretched. The net shall be installed no lower than 8' or higher than 8'2"(depending on installation requirements) 2. Ball:​ The ball provided shall not be less than 25" or more than 27" in circumference, and it shall weigh not less than 250 grams or more than 280 grams 3. Court boundaries:​ The racquetball courts serve as the wallyball courts. The short serving line in racquetball courts will be designated as the center line. The back wall is in play only on the team's side that's returning the serve or volley providing a player on that team touches it first. The ball is out of bounds whenever it hits the ceiling, hits the back wall on a serve or volley, hits two or more walls on a serve or volley. Two lines 3" long by 1" wide placed in each teams' right hand corner shall determine the service area. The first line is placed 3' from the back wall, on the wall on the right facing the net. The next line placed at the 10' mark, front and back wall respectively. VI. MATCH TIME, LENGTH, AND SCORING 1. Forfeits- ​ A forfeit is recorded when a team appears with less than the number of players required to start a game (3 in wallyball). There will be a maximum 10 minute waiting time (with the game clock running) from

the original game start time for a team to show with adequate numbers. Each forfeit by a team will result in a 2 sportsmanship rating for that game. If a team forfeits a third contest during the regular season, the team will be dropped from any further play in that sport. 2. Defaults-​ If a team is unable to play and informs ​ [email protected]​ by 2PM the day of the game, the team will be awarded a sportsmanship rating of 5 instead of a forfeit 2. 3. League elimination- ​ Should a team forfeit and/or default a combined 4 times in a season they will be removed from the league. 4. Points: ​ All games are played with rally scoring. Games are played to 25 with the third game (tiebreaker) played to 15; must win by two in all games. A match is won by the team who wins 2 out of 3 games. The forfeit/no show score is 25-16. VII. RULES OF THE GAME 1. Position of players: i. The server shall serve from within 2 feet of the back wall ii. Players shall be positioned as follows: 1 player up and 2 players back, or 2 up and 1 back. iii. After the ball is hit for serve, players may move from their respective positions. iv. At the moment of service it is illegal for the players of the serving team to place their arms forming a screen with which to hide the server’s action, or to jump, or form groups of two more players for such a purpose. v. Net serves are legal. vi. Substitutions may be made only when before a new server serves 2. Service: ​ For the first game of match one, the captains of the two teams shall call the toss of the coin. i. The winner gets their choice of the service or playing area. ii. The team not serving first shall start serving the second game. iii. The team with most combined points (1st & 2nd game) shall start serving the third game if needed. iv. Teams shall change playing areas at the end of each game of the same match. v. A team shall continue serving until that team commits a foul or the game is completed. vi. When the serving team commits a foul, the ball shall be given to their opponents, who shall rotate one position clockwise. vii. The right back player of the serving team shall be the first server of the game. viii. Thereafter, the player rotating from the right forward to the right back shall be the server. ix. There are no formal rotation rules; however, in co-rec, there must be one female in front at all times. x. Co-rec serving must alternate between male and female. xi. A player shall not serve out of turn. xii. An out-of-turn service may be called by opponents' captain. xiii. A served ball is dead if it: 1) touches the floor of the serving area; 2) a teammate of the server; 3) passes through or under the net; 3) hits back wall; or 4) touches the server-side wall. 3. Net Play: i. A player shall not contact any part of the net while the ball is in play. ii. When the ball is driven into the net so that it causes the net to contact an opposing player or players, this is not a foul if they did not actually contact the net by their own motion. iii. In returning the ball a player may follow through over the net, providing they first contact the ball on their own side of the net. iv. Player(s) in the act of blocking may reach across the net but may not contact the ball until their opponent has hit the ball to return it. v. A player may reach under the net to retrieve a ball that is in play by their team. vi. A ball (other than when served) may touch the net within or on the side when crossing to enter the opponent's playing area vii. When only part of a ball crosses the net and is then contacted by an opponent, it is considered as having crossed the net viii. When a player participates in blocking and makes only one attempt to play the ball during the block, they may make successive contacts of the ball during such a play.

ix. Blocking can only be done by the front line. A back player may not move up to assist on a block. No more than 2 players may block a return. 4.

Playing the Ball: i. Simultaneous contacts of the ball with two or more parts of a player's body are allowed and are considered as one play ii. Simultaneous contacts of the ball by more than one player on the same team are allowed and are considered as one play. iii. Players participating in such a play may participate in the next play. iv. Holding, pushing, scooping, lifting or carrying the ball is not allowed, it must be a clean hit. v. A team shall not set or play the ball more than three times. vi. The ball must clear the net on the third set or that team loses the point or the serve. vii. No climbing or using the walls or players assisting each other to gain height at the net. viii. Contacting the wall does not count as a set or play. ix. The ball can be hit with any part of the body above the waist. It cannot touch below the waist. x. Contacting two or more walls is allowed only by the team in possession of the ball on their own side, provided a player on that team touches the ball first. The ball must also be touched by another player before going over on multiple wall hit. xi. A returned ball must not hit more than one wall xii. For Co-Rec play, anytime the ball is played three times, a female player must hit at least one of those hits.
