Volunteering for Reading, Learning, and Moving with the Warhawks During Fall of 2015, thirty-one UW-Whitewater Warhawk student-athletes volunteered at four different locations for over eight hours. Activities included reading with elementary aged children and engaging in physical activity during lunch recess.

Process a. For future volunteer dates, see the attached spring schedule. Revisions and additions can be discussed with Olivia Ault who will be the coordinating intern in spring 2016. She will be the main contact. After May 2016, to continue this partnership, communication can be made through Dr. Navarro or the respective intern. Each date and event will be discussed with the Warhawk Leadership Academy Board; when agreed upon they will be added to the volunteering calendar. For dates that do not need a set number of confirmed volunteers, details may be given to Olivia to be added to the Warhawks Give Back Opportunities Calendar that goes to all student athletes.

[email protected] School Description : a. Mrs. Burki – 4/5 Grade: “They were awesome. They read to my homeroom consisting of 26 students and were in my room for about 20-25 minutes. The kids loved it!!! (CJ and Jack)” b. Mrs. Hoffmann – 2nd Grade: “Jack Bullis and CJ were wonderful! They both seemed to enjoy themselves and the kids loved having them there. They both are wonderful with kids!” c. Mrs. Samules – 2nd Grade: “Kids enjoyed asking Kate questions about college life and her basketball team. She did a nice job answering their questions. They enjoyed their time with her and the stories she read.” d. Mrs. Ketterhagen 3rd Grade: “It went well… [Kate] did come in and read with Kelsy for a while which Kelsy loved! Then, she read a book to a group when more got back. She was great!”
Activities in engaged while at the school: a. Wednesday, October 7th: Pick a Day, Come and Play. Moving with the Warhawks took place during the outdoor recess after lunch. Athletes first had 15 minutes with kindergartners only and then then next 45 minutes interacting with grades 1-5. b. Friday, November 13th: Reading with the Warhawks and Moving with the Warhawks; 15 minute morning recess with grades 1-5 and individual classroom reading time with grades 15.

Activities in engaged in a. Friday, October 16th Reading and Moving with the Warhawks: a. Read to three 1st and 2nd grade classes and 1 Kindergarten classroom; the b. Engaged with 75 kids at lunch recess b. Friday, December 4th Reading and Moving with the Warhawks: a. Read to two 4th and 5th grade classes and one 3rd grade classroom b. Engaged in physical activity with 65 kids at lunch recess

[email protected] School Description a. The elementary school has 110 Kindergarten and 1st grade students; 115 2nd and 3rd grade students and 130 4th and 5th grade students.
Activities a. Friday, November 20th: Moving with the Warhawks during Lunch recess with each grade level b. Games included: Tag, 4 square, soccer, football, catch and trivia

CHILDREN’S CENTER:______________________________________________ Volunteer Coordinator Contact: a. Erica, Children’s Center Director b.
[email protected] School Description a. Serves children aged 0-4; offering engaging opportunities for each age group. The children are relatives of University students, faculty and the greater Whitewater area.
Activities a. Volunteers interacted with kids 1-5 years old; there were approximately 50 children in the Williams center b. Games included: tag, soccer, and basketball. Other activities with hula hoops, foam balls, and jump ropes kept the kids busy for an hour!
