* All times are Eastern NOTE OF THE NIGHT No Man is and Island – Alex Ovechkin has tallied 47 points (32g, 15a) in 41 career games against New York and scored six goals in Washington's four games against the Islanders last season. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Ovechkin is one of only three active players to score 30 or more career goals against the Islanders (Jaromir Jagr: 61, Patrik Elias: 33). In addition, Ovechkin's career average of 0.87 goals per game against the Islanders is the second-highest all-time (min. 30 GP), trailing Brett Hull (0.94: 30g in 32 GP). Ovechkin has also registered eight multi-goal games against the Islanders in his career. That ties him with Sidney Crosby for the second-most multi-goal games against the Islanders among active players, behind Jaromir Jagr who is the all-time leader with 12. Ovechkin's eight multiple-goal games versus the Islanders are the third-most he's recorded against one team. He's had ten against the Thrashers/Jets and nine versus the Lightning. In addition, Ovechkin’s nine game-winning goals against the Islanders is his most against any franchise.

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Home Sweet Home – The Capitals will face the Islanders on Saturday in their 2016-17 home opener. This marks the fourth time in franchise history Washington will host New York in their home opener (1983, 1994, 2003). The Capitals have posted a 2-0-1 record in home openers against the Islanders, including a 6-1 victory against New York on Oct. 9, 2003 at Verizon Center. Washington has posted a 13-2-1-1 record in home openers at Verizon Center (1998-15) and a 23-15-2-1 record all-time in home openers (The Capitals played at US Airways Arena from 1974-97). Not Wasting Any Time – Andre Burakovsky scored the Capitals first goal of the 2016-17 season 0:59 into the first period on Thursday at Pittsburgh, marking the third-fastest goal to start a season in franchise history. Ryan Walter scored Washington’s fastest goal to start a season 0:12 into the first period on Oct. 7, 1981 at Buffalo. Mike Gartner scored a goal 0:48 into the first period on Oct. 8, 1987 at Boston. Andre the Giant – Andre Burakovsky scored both of Washington’s goals on Thursday at Pittsburgh, marking the second time in Burakovsky’s three NHL seasons that he has scored a goal in the Capitals’ season opener. The Malmo, Sweden, native scored a goal on Oct. 9, 2014 against the Montreal Canadiens at Verizon Center in his NHL debut. In addition, Burakovsky is the first Capitals player to score two goals in the opening game of a season since Mikhail Grabovski registered four points (3g, 1a) on Oct. 1, 2013 at Chicago. Backstrom’s Back – Nicklas Backstrom recorded two assists on Thursday at Pittsburgh. Backstrom has played in Washington’s season opener nine times in his career and has tallied an assist in the opening game six times. In addition, Thursday marked the fourth time in Backstrom’s career he has registered a multi-assist game in the season opener (2009: 3a, 2011: 2a, 2013: 2a, 2016: 2a). Islander Annihilators – The Capitals posted a 3-0-1 record against New York last season and have earned a point in 12 of their last 13 games against New York (9-1-3). Alex Ovechkin (6g) and T.J. Oshie (2g, 4a) led Washington with six points each in four games against New York in 2015-16 and Braden Holtby posted a 3-0-1 record with a 2.19 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage. Holtby has posted a 10-1-3 record with a 2.21 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage in 14 career games against New York and Nicklas Backstrom has earned 33 points (9g, 24a) in 31 career games against the Islanders. The Capitals are 102-84-13-6 all-time against New York and 53-36-11-3 against the Islanders at home. ADDITIONAL CAPITALS NOTES Home Cookin’ – The Capitals posted a 29-8-4 record at home last season, marking the third-most home wins in franchise history (1985-86: 30; 2009-10: 30). In addition, Washington led the NHL in home wins in 2015-16 and ranked fourth in goals against per game (2.27) and fifth in goals per game (3.10) at home last season. Taking the Metro – The Capitals have earned a point in 19 of their last 21 games against Metropolitan Division opponents dating back to last season (1/2-10/13: 13-2-6). Washington posted a 20-5-5 record against division foes last season. The franchise record for most wins in a season against division opponents is 22 (1991-92, Patrick Division). In addition, the Capitals were 39-10-5 against the Eastern Conference in 2015-16, ranking first in the NHL in wins against the conference. Setting the Standard – The Capitals posted a 56-18-8 record (120 points) last season, setting the franchise record for wins in a season and winning the Presidents’ Trophy as the team with the NHL’s best record. Washington ranked second in the NHL in goals per game (3.02) in 2015-16 and returns 89.5% of their goals from a season ago, 92.2% of their assists and 91.2% of their points. Over the last two seasons, the Capitals lead the NHL in wins (101) and points (221). Holtbeast – Braden Holtby enters this season as the reigning Vezina Trophy winner as the League’s top goaltender. Holtby tied Martin Brodeur’s single-season wins record in 2015-16, reaching 48 wins in 12 fewer games than Brodeur. Holtby has reached the 40-win plateau in each of the last two seasons (2014-15: 41, 2015-16: 48) and is trying to become the third goaltender in NHL history to record 40 wins in three consecutive seasons, joining Martin Brodeur (2005-08) and Evgeni Nabokov (2007-10). Another Gr8 Milestone – Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is just 34 points shy of 1,000 career NHL points. Ovechkin, who has led the NHL in goals in each of the last four seasons and is entering his 12th season with the Capitals, is aiming to become the 37th player in NHL history to record 1,000 points with one franchise. Last season, Ovechkin won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goal scorer and was a finalist for the Mark Messier Leadership Award, given to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice during the regular season. In addition, Ovechkin scored a goal against Dallas on Nov. 19, 2015, passing Sergei Fedorov (483) for the most goals by a Russian-born player in NHL history and scored his 500th NHL goal against Ottawa on Jan. 10, 2016, becoming the fifth-fastest player in NHL history to reach the 500-goal plateau (801 games played).

New Kids on the Block – The Capitals acquired Lars Eller via trade this summer and signed Brett Connolly as a free agent. Eller, 27, registered 26 points (13 goals, 13 assists) in 79 games with the Montreal Canadiens last season and has earned 156 points (73 goals, 83 assists) in 442 career NHL games with St. Louis and Montreal. Connolly, 24, registered 25 points (nine goals, 16 assists) in 71 games with the Boston Bruins last season and earned career highs in points, assists and games played. Connolly was drafted by Tampa Bay in the first round, sixth overall, in the 2010 NHL Draft and has earned 59 points (27 goals, 32 assists) in 210 career NHL games with Tampa Bay and Boston. Zach Attack – Zach Sanford made his NHL debut on Thursday at Pittsburgh. Sanford, 21, registered 39 points (13 goals, 26 assists) in 41 games with Boston College (NCAA) in 2015-16. Sanford led the team in assists, ranked third in points and fifth in goals as a sophomore. In addition, he ranked second on the team in plus/minus (27) and tallied 44 penalty minutes during the 2015-16 season. The Salem, Mass., native registered 63 points (22 goals, 43 assists) in 79 career games with Boston College and was drafted by the Capitals in the second round, 61st overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft.
