HEAD COACH TIM KOTH Tim Koth was selected as the 13th head coach in the history of the Wayne State University women’s volleyball program, which celebrated its 40th season in 2014. The announcement was made on Feb. 6, 2014, by WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier.
He began his collegiate coaching career at California State - Northridge while completing requirements for his bachelor’s degree in communications/public relations. Koth served as an assistant women’s coach for two seasons (1987-88), helping the Matadors to a national title in 1987 and the championship match in 1988.
He came to Wayne State after serving as the head coach at fellow GLIAC member Northwood University the previous 10 seasons (2004-13). Prior to his arrival in Midland, Koth spent eight years (1996-2003) at GLVC member Quincy coaching both the women’s Division II program and the men’s Division I program.
His first season as head coach at Northwood in 2004, he led his team to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional championship match and the Timberwolves were ranked 18th in the final national poll. The following year, his squad reached the regional semifinals and was ranked as high No. 16 nationally during the campaign.
While at CSU-Northridge, he served as the assistant men’s volleyball coach for eight seasons (1987Koth enters his 22nd season of coaching (third at 94) helping the Matadors to a 1993 appearance in the national championship match. Koth mentored 60 GLIAC All-Academic honorees during his years at Northwood, including the highest two totals his last two years with nine in 2012 and 11 in 2013. In 2012 his squad was very accomplished both on and off the court as that team was recognized by the AVCA with the Team Academic Award after posting a 3.578 team GPA for the academic year. In 2014, he led WSU to a 9-16 record and a 6-12 league mark. He also helped Emily Norscia and Koth was the 2012 AVCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year after being voted GLIAC Coach of the Heather Weiss to All-GLIAC selections. His first win as the Warriors’ head coach occurred during Year by his peers. His Northwood teams won two GLIAC Divisional titles (South in 2008 and North in the Clarion Invitational against Concord (3-2). Koth’s first GLIAC win with WSU was also his first 2012), plus the GLIAC overall regular-season title in 2012 with a 17-1 league ledger. That year, his home win - against Tiffin (3-2) on Sept. 20th. After leading the Timberwolves to a 21-11 record in 2013, his overall record at Northwood A native of Mt. Clemens, Mich., Koth was the head coach of the Warren St. Anne High School team was 175-124. His Northwood squads qualified for seven GLIAC tournaments and five NCAA prior to his days as a collegiate coach. That squad won Catholic and District titles, earning rankings tournaments in his tenure. as high as No. 4 in the state. Koth was named Coach of the Year by many publications that season. A 1989 graduate of Cal State-Northridge, Koth is a member of the AVCA and USA Volleyball. Koth also spent both the 1994 and 1995 campaigns at Eastern Michigan starting as the associate head coach then taking over five matches into the second year. He mentored Mid-American Conference assists leader Sandy Burkel to a league-leading 12.47 assists per game.
