SVSU extended its winning streak to three games after a 102-62 result Saturday at Marygrove. The Cardinals began their GLIAC schedule with an 82-80 overtime win against Lake Superior State. ALL-TIME SERIES Wayne State trails in the all-time series, 32-31, against Saginaw Valley State. The Warriors won both meetings in 200910, while the Cardinals swept the 2010-11 series. WSU defeated SVSU, 89-87, in double overtime last December. LAKE ERIE RECAP Wayne State began GLIAC play with a 67-56 victory Thursday night at Lake Erie. Mike Hollingsworth led three Warriors in double figures with 19 points, while Ian Larkin added 14 points and Cole Prophet chipped in with 12 points. Ike Udanoh grabbed a game-best eight boards. Wayne State shot 50 percent (26-of-52) from the floor, compared to LEC’s 38 percent (20-of-53), and finished with just 10 turnovers. The Warriors led by as many as 17 points and never trailed in the contest.

ASHLAND RECAP Udanoh and Prophet combined to score 33 points, including all seven during a decisive 7-0 run late in the second half, as Wayne State rallied for a 75-66 win at Ashland on Saturday. After leading by as many as 12 in the first half, WSU found itself trailing 47-40 with 14:36 to play before an 11-point run made it 51-47 lead with 11:09 left. Ashland battled back to tie it at 63-63, but the Warriors’ 7-0 run put the game away. Udanoh totaled 18 points and 12 rebounds while Prophet added 15 points. Gerald Williams-Taylor contributed 11 points.

He is the fifth-longest tenured coach at WSU. The 22 victories by the Warriors in 2010-11 were the most under Greer and the highest total since the 1998-99 NCAA qualifying squad compiled a 25-5 record. Wayne State’s 14 GLIAC wins last year are the most since the same 1998-99 team took first place in the conference with a 16-3 mark. Fifth-year head coach Frankie Smith is 54-60 at Saginaw Valley State. He was named GLIAC Coach of the Year last season.
FIVE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW • In his 11th season at Wayne State, head coach David Greer has guided the Warriors to a record of 154-130. • Junior guard Mike Hollingsworth was voted GLIAC Pre-Season Player of the Year by the conference coaches in balloting conducted earlier this fall, while senior center Ike Udanoh was voted to the GLIAC South Division Second Team. • Russ McNamara is in his third season as the voice of Wayne State University men’s basketball on NewsTalk 1400 AM WDTK. • In the GLIAC Media Pre-Season Poll, the Warriors received two first-place votes and 134 points to finish third in the league’s South Division. Findlay garnered 20 first-place votes and 170 points to top the division, while Hillsdale earned three first-place votes and 140 points. • Comcast will air both the Dec. 8 Saginaw Valley contest and the Jan. 12 Hillsdale matchup live across Michigan on Channel 900.
SCOUTING SAGINAW VALLEY STATE Junior guard Chris Webb hit a clutch three-pointer to lift SVSU over Lake Superior State in overtime last Thursday. Webb scored a team-high 23 points against the Lakers and added 13 points in the win over Marygrove. He leads SVSU and ranks fourth in the GLIAC in scoring (18.6 ppg) this season. Senior Greg Foster posted 20 points and nine rebounds against the Lakers, while also scoring 14 points and seven assists vs. Marygrove. Foster ranks second on the team (10th in GLIAC) averaging 15.4 points per game. Through seven games, the Cardinals are averaging 79.6 points and shooting .446 from the floor. SVSU has a 77.5 team free throw percentage, with four players shooting 80 percent or better.
IN THE POLLS Wayne State was picked to finish third in the South Division in the GLIAC media preseason poll. Saginaw Valley State was tabbed for fifth in the North Division. LOOKING AHEAD Wayne State will remain at home next week, as the Warriors host Ohio Dominican next Thursday (Dec. 15) and Tiffin next Saturday (Dec. 17). WSU will wrap up the 2011 calendar year Dec. 29 at Wisconsin-Parkside and Dec. 31 at Lewis before resuming GLIAC action Jan. 5 at Hillsdale and Jan. 7 at Findlay.
