We have Magnatude

Magnatude is about numbers. It’s about perspective. It’s about seeing the forest and the trees. It’s about pulling back to see the full impact of our manufacturing operations around the world. It’s about zooming in to understand the power of even the smallest effort. It’s about understanding the power of a global organization focused on delivering superior value to our customers.

Little Actions – Big Results! Like any company, we’re always looking for the ‘next-big-thing’ – the monstrous idea that changes lives, revolutionizes an industry, or makes millions of dollars. Reality is, though, that most progress in this world is mostly measured in increments. It is small, repeated efforts that contribute to big change. Here are some examples of small ideas within Magna which have made a big difference: Patching the Profit Leak.

Compressed air represents one of the great opportunities we have for energy conservation across all Magna plants. Every time we repair a ¼” leak in an air compressor, $12,000 goes back to the bottom line, benefiting the shareholders and employees alike.

Zero Waste.

When designing a launch, we create life-sized models of entire assembly lines out of cardboard, and then bring in operators to help optimize the process. The “Zero Waste’ inspiration applies to everything, whether it’s wasted motion, wasted inventory, wasted time, or wasted money.

Good For All.

Good energy management increases business profitability, maintains our competitive advantage, lowers operating and maintenance costs, and benefits us all through secure jobs and profit sharing. Simple projects like energy-efficient lighting start contributing bottom-line results in as little as 10 months!

Every watt counts!

Electricity is measured by kilowatt-hour (kWh). 1 kWh is what it would take to run an air-conditioner for one hour.

Temperature differentials of 10°C have been found within 1 meter of height!

Destratification – A $100K Word That’s how much our factories can save in energy costs per year, by using ceiling fans to blend air temperatures. These energy-saving projects pay for themselves in just four months!

Full Of Hot Air

In northern locations, heating facilities with the redirected warm air from compressors will generate $2MM in annual savings.

Open and Shut Case

Implementing effective shutdown procedures across all of our plants has produced over $14 million in annual savings - more than the budget for the first Star Wars film to hit the big screen!

Weighing In on the Environment Our intensive lightweighting R&D efforts are leading to major reductions in CO2 emissions. Each year, our advancements in product and plant sustainability help save the atmosphere 870 million tons of CO2. That’s equivalent to the annual output of 248 coal powered plants.. One Step at a Time

The transportation sector accounts for 20% of all human-made greenhouse gasses. We are doing our part to change that. Each kilogram of traditional steel that aluminum replaces saves 18 kilograms of greenhouse gas emission – the equivalent weight of 360 spark plugs!

The Right Stuff

Besides carbon fiber and aluminum technology, we have continued to invest in new lighter materials like steel alloys and magnesium components. One of the keys to future lightweighting will come in arranging and joining the right materials, in the right way, to avoid corrosion.

Global Thinking

Hot stamping is utilized in a number of specific areas of the vehicle: body pillars, rockers, roof rails, bumpers and door intrusion beams.

MAGNA’s Body and Chassis group is an industry leader in hot stamping. The process reduces weight, and increases overall fuel efficiency. We currently have 22 hot stamping lines across five countries - US, Canada, Mexico, Germany and China.

Dollars and Sense

In 2015, global market value for lightweight materials used in the transportation industry will grow to $125.3 billion USD. That’s Hungary’s annual GDP!

The Future is Frugal

Carbon-fiber composites can improve future fuel efficiency by 35%, and reduce car weight by 50 percent without a drop in performance or safety. This means approximately $5,000 (USD), €4,060 or 310,000 in fuel-cost savings to the end user.

When it comes to seating, Magna takes center stage 75% of all the vehicle seats that we manufacture are designed for minivans and sport utility vehicles. To date, Magna has made approximately 72,000,000 Chrysler and Dodge minivan seats. That’s enough to seat the entire population of Canada, twice. 25M

PADS FOAM

Full House Each year, we produce roughly 25 million foam pads. That is enough foam to cover the floor of the Cobo Center, home of the North American International Auto Show, a whopping 45 times!

Solid Performance WARRANTY

Magna Seating is leaps and bounds above the competition in terms of warranty. From July to September 2014, our IPTV average (instances per thousand vehicles) was 3.8 – 7.4 units lower than GM’s target and 4.6 units lower than the nearest competition.

Popularity Contest A Stow 'n Go™ badge appears on the B pillar of most Chrysler and Dodge minivans. Others also feature an exterior Swivel 'n Go™ badge. How often do companies advertise their seats on the outside of their vehicles? With Magna, more often than you would think.

Lighting Cue Our UltraLite™ front seat structure utilizes the latest advancements in lightweight mechanisms, materials and process. Meeting FMVSS and ECE regulations, it applies to manual or power seat applications.

Top Gun Thinking With advances in aerospace technology and in-flight refueling, F18 fighter pilots were feeling the strain of new, longer 13-hour missions. When Boeing ( McDonnell Douglas) reached out for help, Magna was up to the task. Working with the fighter pilots we developed new, innovative solutions in cockpit seating, setting a new bar for aerospace comfort.

Spotlight on IFM Magna's new Internal Full Memory ( IFM ) Seat Back Recliner is designed to remember adjusted positioning. By shaving 1.14 kg off of total weight per seat, we save 300 metric tons, the maximum landing weight of a Boeing 747, in annual production volume.

The new i-DiSC 4™ recliner, save 20 mm in folded height, and 42% in component mass compared to commonly used recliners, recovering the volume of a can of soda per seat. That volume can mean a world of difference to people who commonly bump their heads against a low ceiling.

Turning Up the Volume

One Touch Stow 'n Go™ utilizes dual phase steel, making it possible to minimize track thickness without losing strength. The 1.4 mm track reduces space, weight and friction, allowing the seat to fold down in a single tap.
