Week 7: Championship Weekend No. 17 Men’s Quick Hits

Overview • The Pilots return to action as they host the West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday at Fernhill Park. • The men’s 8k is scheduled to start at 9:45 a.m. • This is just the second time Portland has hosted the WCC Championships, with the only other time occurring in 1978. • Portland has claimed 32 of the last 33 WCC titles. • Senior Lars Erik Malde earned a spot on the WCC All-Academic team for the third consecutive season as five other Pilots received honorable mention. They See Me Runnin’, They Hatin’ • Portland looks to continue its national success this year after its second highest finish at the NCAA Championships last year. • The Pilots have finished in the Top 20 in each of the last seven years, including three seasons that ended in the Top 10. • Regularly a dominant team in the nation, Portland won 32 straight West Coast Conference Championships from 1979-2010. WCC Preseason Poll • The Pilots were tabbed to finish second in the conference this year, having won 32 of the last 33 conference titles. • Portland had four runners on the Preseason All-WCC Team as Jared Bassett, Scott Fauble, Lars Erik Malde, and David Perry received recognition. • The Pilots will be hosting the WCC Championships this season at Fernhill Park on October 27th.

Women’s Quick Hits

Overview • Ranked No. 8 in the West Region, the women’s team enters the West Coast Conference on the heels of back-toback impressive meets. • After dominating the field at the WPC Invitational two weeks ago, Portland picked up a second place finish last weekend at the Beaver Classic. • Sophomore Maddie Hibshman and junior Merel van Steenbergen each earned a spot on this year’s WCC AllAcademic team. • 10 other Pilots received honorable mention, giving the program the second highest total in the conference behind Santa Clara (14) WCC Preseason Poll • Portland finished third at the 2011 WCC Championships and are picked to finish third again in 2012. • Portland had three runners on the Preseason All-WCC Team as Kellie Houser, Marit Tegelaar, and Merel van Steenbergen received recognition. • Tegelaar and van Steenbergen each finished in the top 10 to earn All-WCC First Team honors in 2011. Houser finished 11th to receive Honorable Mention. • The Pilots will be hosting the WCC Championships this season at Fernhill Park on October 27th, the first time in program history. • Portland’s top three runners from the 2011 NCAA West Regionals (Merel van Steenbergen, Kellie Houser, and Natasha Verma) all finished in under 22:00 and are all returning for the 2012 season.
