Weekly Berry Call – July 10, 2012 Participants: Cathy Heidenreich (Cornell, Geneva, NY), David Handley (UMaine, ), Jim O’Connell (CCE Orange County), Marvin Pritts (Cornell, Ithaca, NY) Dale Ila Riggs (Stephentown, NY), Pam Fisher (OMAFRA, Ontario, Canada), Kevin Schooley (NASGA, Ontario, Canada), Mary Conklin (UConn, Storrs, CT), Heather Faubert (URI, Rhode Island), Jeff Miller (CCE Oneida County, Marcy, NY), Greg Loeb, Cornell NYSAES‐Geneva, NY, Sonia Schloemann (UMass, Amherst, MA) by e‐mail… SWD Reports: Westfield, MA – first confirmed SWD male caught for the season. Photo left courtesy S. Schloemann. Rhode Island – Traps out in 13 locations; 9 out of 13 have confirmed trap catches both males and females in past 2 weeks; expectation is remaining traps will be positive when checked this week. Six traps are deployed per farm location. IN an unsprayed setting trap catch was 9+ total (males and females). Maggots observed in field in summer raspberries. Appears there are more SWD in summer raspberries than blueberries. Growers extremely reluctant to spray – hoping if they ignore it the problem will go away?! Using same traps as R. Cowles: red cups, Connecticut – SWD trapped on several farms across the state; just a few (2‐3) appearing in each trap. Growers spraying proactively. Also appears to be fewer caught in blueberries than raspberries here. Stephentown, NY – traps being deployed this week. No visible signs of infestation…? Marcy, NY – No traps out; no one spraying. Geneva, NY – one SWD male confirmed in trap in Finger Lakes/Lake Ontario region. Larvae reared out of fruit (cherries, raspberries, strawberries, and wild hosts (twinberries) negative for SWD so far. Monmouth, Maine – Traps out; no positive SWD as of yet; no symptoms observed on fruit. Beginning summer raspberry harvest there – expectation is to have SWD problems. Using R. Cowles traps with yeast. Ontario ‐ We are monitoring with a network of consultants and OAMFRA staff (over 100 sites across the province), and are funded by the Ontario Berry Growers association in 2012 for our SWD monitoring program. Updates can be found at http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/facts/2012swd‐catches.htm#update. And our other info is at www.ontario.ca/spottedwing. Seven counties have had positive SWD ID’s in trap catches; no damage reported yet. Using vinegar traps. Discussion: What to look for in terms of SWD damaged fruit? Ripe/ove ripe raspberry fruits – larvae larger, easier to find in these; pull fruit open, watch for movement with handlens. Egg breathing tubes not particularly visible in this instance. Cherries – egg breathing tubes very visible under scope. What products are people using to manage SWD? Delegate and/or Entrust once a week. Malathion on a slightly longer schedule. Odor form this product dissipates quickly after it dries; no need to add wintergreen oil to mask scent as some growers are…Pyganic – labeled but not extremely effective; unprotected 12 hrs after application?! R. Cowles suggests adding 1‐2 lb sugar per 100 gal water as a feding attractant when sprays are applied. Peaches – Vulnerable to infestation by SWD? Spray or not to spray? We don’t know… Primocane‐fruiting raspberries – fruit maturing on last year’s floricanes during primocane bloom; spray now? Unclear. Many growers opting to send crews through to clean harvest this early fruit to delay having to spray as long as possible without risk of infestation in main fall crop. Suggestions of possible wild hosts: Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica). From Greg Loeb: Yes, we are collecting fruit from buckthorn and I am expecting some SWD. I believe Rufus Isaacs at MSU has reared SWD from this host in the past. Morrow Honeysuckle (very common in RI; red‐fruited; fruiting now).
