Dear parents/guardians:

Dec.14, 2017

Living in New England we never know what type of weather we will have. So it is time to go over plans for weather related scenarios for inclement days. Our goal is for school to be in session every day, but New England weather keeps us on our toes. So this is a copy of the newsletter you may want to post on the refrigerator all winter into early spring. DELAYED OPENING: In the event that there is a delayed school opening a notification will go out on our WB App, posted on social media (Facebook, Twitter) along with a call from the Connect-Ed communication system. If conditions are such that the Highway Department needs time to plow the road, or sand the streets, the school day will be shortened. The opening of school and all bus pickups will be delayed most likely one hour. This means that the MSHS will open at 8:30am. The Howard School will open at 9am. The RLM School will open at 9:30am. The SSS will open at 10am. The school buses will begin their student pick-up one hour later than the normal time. Please allow time for the buses due to inclement weather. Schools will be dismissed at the regular time and lunches will be served at the regular time. No Morning Surround Care if school is delayed. SURROUND CARE/WEATHER RELATED DISMISSALS/DELAYED OPENINGS: Please remember, there is NO MORNING surround care if there is a delayed opening. If we have an early dismissal, Surround Care staff will not contact you. You will receive a Connect-Ed phone call. A WB App notification will be sent to parents who have signed up - see instructions for WB App sign up below. SC students will be sent home according to the prior notification provided by you on your original registration form which Mrs. Quinn has in the SC files. You may contact Mrs. Quinn (508 894-1230) or e-mail at [email protected] for more info. W.B. APP: Sign up now for our customized app which gives mobile access to school news, notifications, lunch menus, athletic schedules, all the posts on our webpage and more! The app is free and can be downloaded for android devices at the Google Play Store and for apple devices at the App Store. Go to West Bridgewater School District - scroll down to the Google Play Store or Apple Store icon & click. Once the app is on your phone/ipad go to settings in the menu bar to set up your preference for notifications (district, individual schools, and/or athletics). DISTRICT WIDE SPIRIT DAYS: Our next district wide spirit day is Jan. 10, 2018. Staff and children are encouraged to wear their new T-shirt . . . other dates include: 2/7, 3/7, 4/11, 5/9, 6/6. RECESS: The cold weather is finally here. The children go out for recess everyday unless it is extremely cold or rainy. Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the cold weather. Children are allowed to play in the snow IF they have boots, snow pants, gloves, hat and a warm jacket. Otherwise, they will play on the blacktop. Be sure all items are labeled with your child’s name. VOLUNTEER CHECK IN: Please remember all volunteers and visitors must check in at the office when entering the building. This is to ensure a safe and secure environment in which learning and personal growth can flourish. While we encourage parents and community members to be a major part of the educational system, student safety must be addressed in our society today. Make sure you: *Check in at the main office desk *Sign the volunteer/visitor log form and remember to *Sign out at the close of the visit. DISMISSAL PROCEDURES: Please be sure to send in ANY and ALL changes to how your child goes home. We have had quite a few children lately who are confused on what to do (go on the bus, parent pick up or Surround Care). Dismissal is a very busy time and runs much smoother if teachers, office and child know how they are getting home. BIRTHDAYS WITH THE PRINCIPAL: December students’ birthday celebration will be Thurs. Dec. 21 by grade level for lunch. Students bring a lunch from home or order their lunch at school

RLM FOOD DRIVE: This holiday season gr. 1 has organized a collection for our food pantry. Gr. 1 has invited all of RLM to take part in collecting food items for the WB Food Pantry. Deadline for Holiday Food Drive, non-perishable items is tomorrow, Friday, December 15th. This deadline allows all items collected to be sent to the WB Food Pantry and be available to our town residents in need during the holiday season. CHARACTER TRAIT-RESPECT: In December the children are being asked to think about what respect means. They are learning that respect means treating others how they want to be treated. Teachers have explained that respect also means that you care enough to think about others’ feelings before you act. They have been taught that showing respect includes not calling people mean names, treating people with courtesy and listening to all adults. Teachers will be sending in nominations of students who are showing respect. Our assembly recognizing students who are respectful will be Dec. 22nd. DECEMBER ACTIVITIES: Keep an eye open for the celebrations of the season from your child’s classroom teacher. With the Wellness policy in effect, requests for food (if any) will be very specific, limited and closely monitored for adherence to the Wellness guidelines. Food allergies are serious, potentially life threatening and are a major consideration in school celebrations. Not all classrooms will be serving food during their celebrations. With wellness and allergy considerations many school districts have had to revamp the rules set for celebrations regarding food. We also want children to understand they can have a celebration without consuming an array of food (some of questionable nutritional value) choices. Do not send in any food unless requested by your classroom teacher. GIFT GIVING: Just a friendly heads-up that the State of Massachusetts enacted ethics regulations a few years ago for all public employees and there are now specific guidelines for giving gifts to your favorite teachers that we must abide by. Teachers are allowed to accept a whole class gift with an aggregated value of up to a maximum of $150 per year from current public school students and/or their parents as long as the gift is identified only as being from the class, and the identity of givers and the amounts given are not identified to the recipient. (In other words, no names can be listed on the card only from the class, even if some choose not to contribute.) Likewise individual gifts cannot have an aggregated value of more than $50 over a 365 day period. Of course, kind words of thanks and wishes for a happy healthy new year are most cherished at this time of year by our staff and gifts are not expected or necessary. We are only sharing the regulation guidelines to avoid any discomfort and teachers must disclose gifts they receive at the holiday in a written format to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest or inappropriateness. STAFF/PARENT IMPROVEMENT COUNCIL: Our next scheduled meetings are Dec. 18, Jan. 29, Feb. 26, March 26, April 30. We will have meetings once a month on Mondays at 3:30pm in the Reading Room. Thank you to parents and teachers who volunteered to be on the Staff/Parent Improvement Council. HALF DAY DISMISSAL: January 10, 2018 – 12 noon dismissal – no lunch served
