2018 LEAGUE INFORMATION West Seattle Baseball

Know Your Role •Players – play •Coaches – coach •Umpires – ump •Parents – cheer

22

Parent’s Role • Get involved! Coaches spend the most time preparing for games and practices, setting line ups, warming kids up before the games. • What can you do? • Schedule snack shack shifts for your team • Umpires – At least 2 per team • Scorekeeper- Pinto and up • Field Set Up – chalking and raking is imperative • Field Maintenance- the league is always looking for help • Hang banners at Pee Wees and Bronco games 23

Coach’s Role • Keep the game simple and fun. • Your goal should be that the kids play next year. • Coach for the love of the game and the athlete. • Put the welfare of your athletes above winning. • Accept and abide by the judgment of the officials and rules of the game as “mutual agreements” required to play within the spirit of the game. • Reward effort and behavior instead of outcome. • Put the needs of the team ahead of any individual. • Hold a meeting and set expectations for parents and kids.

WEBSITE- It’s new West Seattle Baseball

DIVISION BREAKOUT West Seattle Baseball

Shetland Division • 14 teams • Most teams made up of 7-9 players • Generally have two events a week: • Pre-season: 2 practices • During season: one practice & one game • Games details: • hour in length • no catchers • players may receive up to three pitched balls, then tee • everyone plays in the field each inning • everyone bats each inning • LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS – Nobody can catch, Everyone builds volcanoes, Nobody pays attention.

30

Shetland Division • RECORD REGISTRATION NUMBERS• Coaches needed! • Please see Matt Bay or myself.

Pinto Division • 11 teams • Players introduced to kid-pitch (two innings) • Coaches pitch from 38’ (front of mound in 1st 2 innings) • Score is kept. Measures are taken to keep the games short (two hours or less) • No walks • Coach pitch for last 4 innings • 3 runs per inning

32

Mustang Division • 10 teams • Fully kid-pitch • Score is kept. • Measures are taken to keep the games short (two hours or less) • Walks & Steals • No dropped 3rd strike • 5 runs per inning • Possible “interlock” with other Pony leagues

33

Bronco Division • 8 teams • Games no longer at Pee Wee Fields • 50 foot pitching distance • Feels like big league baseball: • Leading off / pick off throw • Bunting • Dropped 3rd strike • Broken down into: • Pre-Season –no bearing on the post season • Regular Season – 10-12 games for playoff seeding • Post Season – Playoffs at the end of the season • Possible “interlock” with other Pony leagues

34

Pony Olympic, Cascade and P13 • 2 teams • Pony teams either play in Olympic or Cascade divisions • Olympic – The best 13 and 14 year old players from the division are put together to play other Olympic teams from around the Puget Sound Region. These teams often train together outside of the regular season. • Cascade – Rec level baseball that can vary in talent. This level is open to all players. Cascade teams play other Cascade teams from around the Puget Sound area. • P13 – This is a 13U Olympic program. Not open to 14 year olds. • Compete against other local leagues, short travel involved.

35

Colt Division • 1 team • 16U division of high school age kids. • Begins in May after school seasons end. • Play interlock with other leagues around Seattle.

36

Pony Champions Division • The newest league in the PONY family is for children with special needs. (age 4-23) • T-Ball or Coach Pitch • Buddy System • T-ball rules • Low cost • West Seattle to attempt 2-4 days of play on open Sundays starting in May with a possible Home/Home series with Mountlake Terrace

37

Regular Season Games • Shetland – 10, mostly Saturday mornings, some Sundays this year • Pinto ~ 14 – Monday/Wednesday/Saturday • Mustang ~ 16 – Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday • Bronco ~ 18 – Monday/ Wednesday/ Fri/Saturday • Pony ~25 – variable. Will need to travel

38

Post Season Tournament • Pinto/Mustang • Double Elimination • Random draw • Bronco • Double Elimination • Based on regular season • Pony • To be determined by VP and coaches

39

Summer Season All Stars • We have All Star opportunities for ages 7-12 • We host tournaments at each level every summer • Tryouts are in early May (date TBD) Crush • For those kids who want more baseball but didn’t make an all star team, or for families who like their summer vacations. • This program is continually evolving. 40

Player Evaluations next weekend • All Players go through 4 stations in order. This allows all coaches to see all of the kids. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Shuttle Run 4 ground balls from SS>>1B 3 fly balls from RF>>3B 8 swings at the plate 5 pitches *Bronco only

We decided in the past that seeing pitching at this point in the season wasn’t a good use of time. If they have a strong arm, they can probably pitch. 41

Evaluations and Draft • All draft eligible kids are evaluated by every coach. • Kids are assigned ADV (average draft value). • Coaches kids are slotted appropriately for parity. • Kids can be drafted wherever a coach wants. • Only coaches kids and siblings are guaranteed to be on same team. • Every kid makes a team.
