Cleveland West Shore Delta Gamma Alumnae

West Shore Waves

Winter 2015 #283

From the President

Becki Anders, Gamma Iota, DePauw Cleveland West Shore Delta Gamma Alumnae Chapter is 60 years old! Before becoming its own chapter, many of our early members belonged to the Cleveland Alumnae Chapter. What was it like to be a Delta Gamma alumna in the 1950s? Before the decision to split, the group had grown so large that many of their meetings were held at downtown hotels. Having an East side and West Side group allowed these Delta Gammas to host more of their meetings and events in members’ homes. Before we could announce upcoming events on Facebook or through email, many of the Delta Gamma events were publicized in local newspapers, complete with pictures and captions, like the ones to the right. As we did back then, Cleveland West Shore continues to be a source of entertainment and support for Delta Gammas. We work to “do good” by driving Cleveland Sight Center clients to their Anchor Club meetings. Our fundraising events allow us to support Cleveland Sight Center and Delta Gamma Foundation financially. We also try to help the Case collegians and provide a scholarship to a local Delta Gamma collegian. If you are new to the area or just ready to meet some new, fun people, check out our program calendar for the rest of the year. Painting, decorating, wine tasting, sisterhood at Founders Day… we are proud of the first 60 years and hope you will join us as we celebrate this special year ahead!

Member Spotlight - Louise Monson, Beta Zeta – Denison University For many Cleveland West Shore Alumnae, their first experience with Delta Gamma as an alum was a meeting at Louise Monson’s home. For years Louise hosted summer meetings for West side alumnae and collegians and the fall kick-off potluck. As Cleveland West Shore celebrates its 60th anniversary as an alumnae chapter, Louise celebrates her 75th year as a Delta Gamma! Louise was in the third Delta Gamma pledge class at Denison University, pledging Delta Gamma in 1940, and lived in their brand new house. She still reads The Anchora from cover to cover and is amazed at how Delta Gamma has grown. Talking about the early years of our chapter, Louise had been an active member of the Cleveland Alumnae Chapter and said it was a hard decision to split the chapter into two groups. “We had become too big and it was hard to find a house where we could all fit. I liked the people in the East side group and it was hard to make the break because I would miss seeing them.” Louise was the second president of Cleveland West Shore, serving from 1957-1959. She was actively involved in Cleveland West Shore for years and continues to attend the Bridge Club. “My granddaughter is not a Delta Gamma, but I tell her she should get involved in her alumnae group. You should want to get involved with your alumnae group. The women I know in the Bridge group are all younger than me, but they are a great group to be with. They are such nice people.” We look forward to celebrating Louise and our chapter’s 60th year at this year’s Founders Day.
