Roundup sits in an area surrounded by hills, which made it an ideal location for large cattle "roundups" in bygone years. According to historians, Roundup was so named because ranchers found the valley near the Musselshell River a natural place to "round up" their cattle in the fall of the year. Some say it was named because it was the ending point of the Texas Trail cattle drives into Montana. The people of Montana were able to live a piece of history in 1989 when Roundup became the trailhead of the Great Montana Centennial Cattle Drive. Because of the success of the Centennial Cattle Drive, a cattle drive is now held annually and takes place in late August. There are a myriad of activities that visitors can enjoy such as visiting our historical museum, playing golf at the beautiful Pine Ridge Country Club, taking in the many rodeos, watching the Bump 'N Run Motor Cross Races. Hunters and photographer enjoy the bounty of the wildlife here… elk, antelope, deer, turkey etc… all found in this lush habitat.

GENERAL OPERATION The owner of the West Wind Ranch has done an amazing job keeping the ranch and home in pristine condition. He has operated the ranch as a cattle operation and ran up to 130 A.U.’s and cut up to two ton of hay per acre. In the recent years, they have planted oats and barley as nurse crops and then cut them for hay. There is no longer any farming done on the ranch and everything has been planted to grass. Some of it has a mix of alfalfa and wheat grass and some is a pasture mix. There was originally about 250 acres that was farmed on the ranch.

WILDLIFE & FISHERY There are all kinds of wildlife on the ranch including Deer, Antelope, turkeys, sharp tailed grouse, Elk, coyotes, fox and an occasional Lynx and Mountain Lion. The ranch is four miles to the Musselshell River, which is a tributary of the Missouri River, approximately 292 miles long. It rises in several forks in the Crazy, Little Belt, and Castle mountains. The main branch is formed by the confluence of the North Fork and South Fork in western Wheatland County. It flows east past Two Dot and Harlowton, northeast past Roundup, and then north, where it joins the Missouri as one of the arms of Fort Peck Lake. The river is used extensively for irrigation. It was explored by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804. For an angler or floater who is seeking solitude, look no further than the Musselshell River. The river is seldom fished by anyone but the locals. While the upper twenty-five miles hold smaller numbers of large brown trout, the Musselshell River is primarily a warm water fishery. In addition to the brown trout that are found on its upper reaches, the river has strong populations of both catfish and smallmouth bass, particularly down near Fort Peck Lake.

RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Roundup is near some of the Big Sky Country’s great fishing, hunting, golfing, skiing, hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, horseback riding, boating, bird watching and other outdoor recreation. Nearby are: the CM Russell Nat’l Wildlife Refuge, Fort Peck Recreation Area, Yellowtail Dam, Bighorn River, Missouri River, Yellowstone River, Lewis & Clark National Forest and James Kipp Recreation Area. Nearby points of interest include the Little Big Horn National Monument, Plenty Coups State Monument, Yellowstone National Park, Yellowtail Dam and Big Horn Reservoir, Pompeys Pillar National Monument, Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area, and Buffalo Bill Historical Center.
