Chapter President’s Message It has been a while since we produced a newsletter, and a lot has happened since then, but the most important thing is…wait for it…Westport has two new members!!! That makes four so far this IAAP fiscal year! I am so excited for our chapter. Please join me in welcoming Pamela Bowe and Ruth Gaither. Heart of America and Westport hosted a joint holiday party for our members last week, which included several guests from the Hallmark Chapter. It was held at the Ronald McDonald House, enabling us to combine our holiday party with a community service project by bringing donations from their Wish List. We had loads of good food and lots of fun networking and playing ―reindeer‖ games (too cute, I know). We all brought a wrapped gift and held a silent auction, bidding on the ―unknown.‖ What fun it was to open the presents not knowing what you were going to end up with, but the best part was that a portion of the auction proceeds was donated to the Ronald McDonald house. Thanks to all for your generous bids. Mary Madick, CAP-OM (Holiday Party Committee Chair) and Pamela Creasman, CAP-OM, did an awesome job making this a memorable and fun event. Check out the pictures on pages 7-8. Westport’s next chapter meeting is Tuesday, January 8, 2013. The plan is to have a New Member Orientation, but all members should plan to attend so that we can give our new members a proper Westport Welcome. Information about our June 2013 Missouri Division Annual Meeting in Chesterfield is on page 4. Hope you all plan to be there – I am all but packed. Also, registration is now open for 2013 EFAM in Anaheim, CA. I have booked my hotel and registered, so I will be there. Hope to see you there too. The deadline for The Foundation of IAAP fundraiser is January 25, 2013. See page 4 for details. If you want to purchase one of these Executive Portfolios, see Crystal Thomas, CAP-OM, at our January chapter meeting. She will collect the funds and place the order for us as a group. Finally, I want to thank everyone throughout IAAP, in particular the Missouri Division, for the cards and emails expressing sympathy and offering prayers for the recent passing of my Dad. I miss him very much and it is still hard to talk about. I can’t express just how much your kind words meant to me. Still do. Thank you. May God bless you and your families during this holiday season. See you next year! Sandra W. Price, CAP-OM 2012-2013 President

International President’s Message Red Cross volunteers are making a difference in the lives of those affected by the devastation Hurricane Sandy wrought last month along the East Coast. Volunteers make a difference all over the world. Not just in disasters but also in libraries, local community theaters, service clubs such as Rotary, Kiwanis and Girl Scouts and in so many other groups that make a difference. The benefits of volunteering don’t only affect the ones on the receiving end. Those who give their time and resources get paid in multiple ways. Volunteers learn new skills and receive payments into their emotional bank account. Our world—and our association—is better because of volunteers. Volunteers are what make IAAP thrive. Not only do member-volunteers make us great, we would cease to exist as an association without them. Volunteering does something for the association but donating time and service as a volunteer also does something for you. Volunteering is an excellent way to gain life experiences. Volunteering brings together a diverse range of people from all backgrounds and walks of life. You will learn leadership skills, organization, public speaking, project management and so much more. And, volunteering also offers an incredible networking opportunity. Interested? We’ve opened the call for nominations for international offices. Any chapter may nominate one of its qualified members as a candidate for the IAAP Board of Directors and The Foundation of IAAP Board of Trustees. Also any division, by a vote of its board of directors, may nominate only one of its qualified division members-at-large as a candidate for the IAAP Board of Directors and The Foundation Board of Trustees. Applications must be received by e-mail no later than 5 p.m. CT March 1, 2013. Will you Be The One to take on a leadership role in IAAP in the coming year? We need you and, I’m going to Be The One to say that you also need IAAP. While those in Canada just celebrated Thanksgiving last month, many of our members will gather with family and friends at the end of this month for the American Thanksgiving. Even if you’re not celebrating the American holiday, it’s a good time to look around and celebrate what’s right in your life. Be The One to make a mental list this month of what you’re thankful for. Add to it each day so that by Thanksgiving, you’ll know how wonderful this life is, even during challenging times. Be thankful, and don’t forget to volunteer! Karlena Rannals, CAP-OM International President

'Tis the Season for Holiday Scams We all look forward to the holidays, and so do scammers. Here are some of the ways the bad guys will try to trick you, both at the office and at home:
1. Charity tricksters. The holidays are traditionally the time for giving. But making donations to the wrong site could mean you're funding cybercrime or even terrorism. Before you give, make sure the organization is legitimate. Many experts advise donating only to blue-chip groups such as the American Red Cross or your place of worship.
2. Grinchy e-cards. Hey, you just got an email with an attachment that looks like an e-greeting card, pretty pictures and all. You think it must be from a friend. Nope! Malicious ecards are sent by the millions. Never open them, as they are often infested with malware.
3. Fake gift cards. Internet crooks promote fake gift cards through social media. What they're after, of course, is your personal information, which they sell to other cyber-criminals who use it to commit identity theft. Nearly all the ―I just won a gift card‖ posts you see on Facebook are scams of this type.
4. Copied sites. Bad guys build complete copies of well-known ecommerce sites, send emails promoting great deals, and ―sell‖ the products - without ever delivering the goods. These sites live only a few days before being shut down, and the money usually goes abroad.
5. 'Extra holiday money' fraud. Everybody can use a little extra dough during this season, so cyber-fraudsters ramp up their work-from-home scams. The most innocent of these snatch your personal info through bogus job application forms, while the worst actually end up with you laundering money for criminal cartels. © National Security Institute, Inc.
