What Do You Want? The most common answer to “why do you want to invest in property” is “Make Money”. Unfortunately, the majority of property investors in Australia “lose” money. There’s a number of reasons for this – wrong strategy, bad advice, not enough education, lack of mentoring ... however, the most common reason people do not succeed at making money investing in property comes down to just one simple area – they have no powerful, motivating, driving reason and therefore are not fully focussed on what they want to achieve. YOUR FUTURE ... 1. Imagine your life five years from now. You have no limitations. You have everything you want. What does your life look like? Where are you living, who is with you, what are you doing? Think about areas such as business, career, spiritual, health, personal, financial, philanthropy, family ... Grab some blank paper, and write this at the top: It is 1 January 2016. I am ... Now go ahead and write what your life looks like. 2. Now imagine your life one year from now. You are well on your way towards your five year ideal life. What does your life look like? At the top of a blank sheet of paper write this at the top: It is 1 January 2012. I am ... Now go ahead and write what your life looks like. 3. And now imagine your life three months from now. What have you achieved? On a blank sheet of paper, and write this at the top: It is (put in the date three months from now). I am ... Now go ahead and write what your life looks like. YOUR GOALS ... The most successful people in the world write their goals. And they stay focussed on them, discarding anything that distracts or moves them away from them. There are lots of ways to write goals. Here’s what I recommend. Go through what you wrote about Your Future. Choose the top five things that are most important to you. Now write a goal for each of them. Write your goal as if it has already happened. For example, let’s say that you want to weigh 65kgs by the end of January. Here’s what this would look like ... It is the 31st January 2011 at 7am. (Specific time and date). I am standing on the scales in my bathroom (specific place). I look down and the scales are displaying 65.0kgs (specific outcome). I am excited, elated, and proud of myself (specific feelings). I let out a whoop and do a happy dance (specific celebration). Today I will go to the shopping centre and buy myself a size 10 pair of jeans (specific reward).
Write your five goals using the format above ... Goal One: ______________________________________________________________________ Goal Two: ______________________________________________________________________ Goal Three: ______________________________________________________________________ Goal Four: ______________________________________________________________________ Goal Five: ______________________________________________________________________ Now take each goal and write it as something to be achieved in the future. Include how you will achieve the goal. Taking the weight loss example above ... I intend to lose 5kgs in the next five weeks, so that I weigh 65kgs by the 31st January. To achieve this I will: 9 Eat breakfast every day 9 Swim 3 x a week 9 Not eat between meals 9 Not eat after 6pm Let your mind tell you what you need to do to achieve your goal – you may be pleasantly surprised at what you come up with! Goal One: ______________________________________________________________________ Goal Two: ______________________________________________________________________ Goal Three: ______________________________________________________________________ Goal Four: ______________________________________________________________________ Goal Five: ______________________________________________________________________ Lastly, you absolutely need to reward yourself for any progress made towards achieving your goal. Even if you don’t quite make it, it is still important to celebrate and reward yourself for your achievements. Write a list of potential rewards ... include really big rewards right down to small things ... here’s some suggestions ... travel destination such as Paris or Noosa, holiday to say DisneyLand or Hamilton Island, favourite sport such as golf, time out – perhaps reading a book, having a picnic, walking along the beach, or a weekend away, hobby – scrapbooking or new sports equipment, something you want to try like sky diving or hot air ballooning, pamper such as a massage or coffee with friends. Now, for each of your Goals, choose three rewards. A big one for completely achieving the goal, a smaller one for achieving some or part of the goal, and a smaller one for an initial win. Using the weight loss example ... • When I weigh 65kgs I will buy myself a pair of Armani Size 10 Jeans. • When I weigh 67kgs I will have a massage. • When I have lost one kg I will go to the movies with my friends.
Go ahead, write rewards for each of your Goals ... Goal One: ______________________________________________________________________ Goal Two: ______________________________________________________________________ Goal Three: ______________________________________________________________________ Goal Four: ______________________________________________________________________ Goal Five: ______________________________________________________________________ Now, print this all out, write it up, get pictures that represent what you wish to do ... set up a Goal Board and stick it all on there. Every day, read the goal board and note your progress. Weigh up every decision against your Why, your Future, and your Goals. And continually ask yourself the question ... Will this take me towards or away from the life I desire and dream off ... ? Keep moving towards your dreams. Set a time to regularly review and update – say every three months. And please, drop me a line and let me know how you go – I would love to hear your story. Bless ya Jennie
