What Happened to Grandpa? A child views the hereafter through the world’s major religions By John Altson & Patti Rae Miliotis

Foreword This book is about the life hereafter, from the vantage point of all of the major modern religions. While the ideal scenario is for an adult to read the book to a child of any age, many other reading models are possible. The book is intended to comfort children by presenting fact-based content about the world’s religions, while at the same time painting a picture of today’s belief systems through poetry and imagery.

Tommy finds out about Grandpa Eight-year-old Tommy comes home from school. “Mom, I’m home … where is everybody? I thought Grandpa was going to take me to soccer. I don’t see his car. Did he forget?” “Tommy, we’re in here,” calls his mother. In the kitchen, Tommy sees his mother, father, and grandmother, but they’re all crying. “What happened?” asks Tommy. “Why are you crying?” “Grandpa died,” says Tommy’s mother. “We are all very sad.” “What happened to Grandpa? Where did Grandpa go?” asks Tommy.

Tommy’s father replies, “Tommy, do you remember that Grandpa had not been feeling very well and we all thought it was a virus? It was much more serious than that. It was his heart. His heart stopped beating and he died.” “So where is he now?” asks Tommy. “He is still here with us,” says his father tenderly. “Each of us will hold Grandpa and his memory in a different way, so he is always with us.” “How? Why? Where did Grandpa go? Will he come back? Will I see him again?” asks Tommy. “Those are all very good questions,” comments Tommy’s father. “A little later, we can talk about what people all around the world believe. Many of the world’s people see their life on earth as a part of a long journey.” Later, in a quiet moment, Tommy and his father sit together in their favorite chair and Tommy’s father begins to explain.
