Kids InfoBits Library Guide WHAT IS KIDS INFOBITS? Kids InfoBits was developed for students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. Featuring a developmentally appropriate, visually graphic interface, the most popular search method is moving from a broad subject to a narrower topic using the subject-based topic tree. The curriculum-related, age appropriate, full-text content is from the best elementary reference sources and magazines. This database covers geography, current events, the arts, science, health, people, government, history, sports and more. WHEN SHOULD I USE KIDS INFOBITS? When you have to:  write a research paper  gather information for public speaking assignments and speeches  find information about a topic HOW DO I CONNECT TO KIDS INFOBITS? 1. Kids InfoBits Library Guide WHAT DO I DO NEXT? You have two searching options: 1. Enter your search terms in the text box 2. Click Search 3. Click on the appropriate subject headings until you get a results list or 1. Click on the category of interest 2. Continue clicking various categories until you find an article you are interested in You can access other kinds of materials relevant to your topic by clicking on any of the following tabs on the results page (if available): Reference; Magazines; Newspapers; Maps, Flags & Seals; Charts & Graphs; and Images. SEARCHING TIPS If you find too many articles:  Use at least two or three search terms (use the word AND to connect the terms) e.g., enron AND scandal AND lawsuit  Be specific  Use the “w” operator to find an exact phrase e.g., enron w1 lawsuit (find enron within 1 word of lawsuit)  Limit (shorten) the date range If you find too few articles:  Search different forms of the word (use an asterisk “*”) e.g., industry* finds industry, industries, industrial, industrious  Use plurals (use the word OR to connect the terms) e.g., scandal or scandals or scandalous  Find synonyms of your search term. (use the word OR to connect the terms) e.g., charge or allege  Lengthen the date range

Types of searches:  Subject guide (default) (uses search terms to find appropriate subject headings)  Category search (click on images to browse various categories)  Advanced search (allows you to limit your search and to search multiples areas: Title/Headline, Source/Source Name, Author, Subject/Name, Full Text, and Keyword) Limiters (available only in advanced search)  Date- limit to results to a specific date or within a date range  Document type- limit to a type of document i.e. Biography, Newspaper, Magazine  Reading Level- limit to Easy or More Difficult  Document Number- use to find a document for which you already have the number Search History  Displays previous searches Backpack  Allows you to save specific items which can later be printed or emailed. Items can be saved by checking the box labeled Put in my Backpack next to each citation. Dictionary  Click on Dictionary (top portion of screen) and type in a word to look it up Teacher Tool Box  Click on Teacher Tool Box for tips and suggestions of how to write a research paper *Click on Help (top portion of screen) for more tips and more detailed explanations
