1. Three in One We believe in one God in three Persons. We call this the Trinity. The three Persons of the Trinity are God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. It is hard to understand what the Trinity is like. Sometimes it helps to compare it to an egg. An egg has three parts: a shell, a yolk, and the white. All three parts make up one egg. This is not exactly like the Trinity, but it can give you an idea of how one thing can be made up of three parts. In one of the apostle Paul’s letters to the Corinthians, he said, “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” Paul understood that God is three Persons and that each Person of the Trinity has a part in the life of every Christian. 2. The Trinity in Salvation All three Persons of the Trinity work together to save people from sin so they can go to heaven. God the Father, who is in heaven, loved us so much that He sent His Son to earth to die for us. He did this because He wants us to have fellowship with Him. God the Son died on the Cross to take
WHAT IS THE TRINITY? our punishment for sin. He did this to show God the Father’s love for us. God the Holy Spirit lets people know when they have sinned. We call this conviction. When a person asks Jesus to forgive his sins, the Holy Spirit gives that person a new life. Then the Holy Spirit helps that person to stop sinning and to live a life pleasing to God. BFP: 503, 512
3. The Trinity in Jesus’ Life and Yours When Jesus was baptized in water, all three Persons of the Trinity were there. Jesus is God the Son in human form. He went down into the water. God the Father’s voice came down from heaven and said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” God the Holy Spirit came down to rest upon Jesus in the form of a dove. Have you been baptized in water? If you haven’t, perhaps you have seen someone get baptized. You would have heard the pastor say, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” This is the way Jesus taught us to baptize new believers, in the name of each of the three Persons of the Trinity. When you pray, the Trinity is at work. You pray to God to give Him thanks and to ask for the things you need. You end the prayer by saying, “In the name of Jesus.” And the Holy Spirit helps you pray to God as you should. BFP: 190, 391, 392, 437, 560
