What It Means to Be a Remote Business Originally published on digitalgait.net “Home is where you hang your hat.” In that simple statement, the spirit of freedom and adventure is harmoniously joined to the notions of comfort and belonging. When applied to business in the 21st century, the saying might be: “Work is where you take your laptop.” Never before has remote work been such a buzz, and even the most traditional of industries are embracing the trend. In fact, one survey shows that 37 percent of US employees have telecommuted for their job – which is in stark contrast to the meager 9 percent that reported doing so in 1995. But this shift in the business landscape is perhaps most observable in the world of digital marketing and social media management. It turns out that helping connect companies to their target audiences is a matter of storytelling – virtual storytelling. All across the world, brands are looking to reach people where they are most likely to be found: on the computer, or on their mobile device. It’s only logical that the main way to reach the masses would be to reach them by means of the digital word. And the digital word can be written anywhere. So it makes sense that companies and entrepreneurs are packing up their laptops and heading for the hills… or the coffee shop across town. For us at Digital Gait, we’ve found that much of our most meaningful connections, sparks of ingenuity, and gems of wisdom have come from living and working in a variety of places. As native Midwesterners, we appreciated the work ethic and down-to-earth values that were inculcated from an early age. With a
move to the Sarasota, Florida area, we found a culturally-diverse and adventurous environment that motivated us to think outside the box and be open to new people, places, and things. Moving west to Colorado, we were inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit and the sense of opportunity that is truly distinct in the Rocky Mountain region. After a brief detour back to Michigan, we have landed in sunny Melbourne, Florida – where we’ve continued to challenge ourselves with new endeavors while experiencing more of the people, places, and things that inspire us most. Social media management has proven to be a perfect fit for the culmination of skills and abilities that we have collectively acquired in our journey thus far. Being a remote business allows us the freedom to hang our hat where we please, and with that comes the prospect of meeting new faces and telling new stories each and every day. We’ve made so many connections along our journey that have enriched us personally and professionally. It’s these connections that give us a sense of belonging wherever we go – and also have taught us how to help others make meaningful connections too through the use of social media. In our case, working remotely doesn’t mean being remote. It means being in touch with the people, communities, brands, and companies around us. We’re always looking to find the best and most innovative ways to keep our clients connected, while staying connected ourselves – no matter where our hat is hung or our laptop is plugged in!
