When Lasaro’s house burned down I want to tell you a story about a boy who lives in a country of South America called Chile (CHEE-lay). His name is Lasaro* (luh-SAH-ro), and like many other people in South America, he speaks Spanish. One night, Lasaro woke up because his mother was shouting. Then he smelled the smoke. When Lasaro ran outside, he saw houses on fire. People were running away. Every house in Lasaro’s neighborhood burned to the ground. Lasaro’s family lost all their clothes and furniture. Our friends at Baptist Global Response were among the many people who came to help. Some of the helpers brought food and clothing. The government helped people find places to live. But many families did not have any water. They couldn’t cook food or take baths. They didn’t even have water to drink. So our friends at BGR decided to build water towers for the families. They built wooden stands and put big metal tanks on the stands. The tanks would hold water families could use to drink and cook and wash. Churches like ours gave money so BGR could build the water towers. When Lasaro’s mother heard her family was getting a water tower, she started crying with joy and praising God. She shouted “Gloria a Dios!” (GLO-ree-ah ah DEE-ose) which in Spanish means “Glory to God!” Let’s pray that God would help Lasaro and other families like his as they make new lives for themselves after the fire. Let’s thank God that our friends at BGR were there to help them. And let’s join Lasaro’s mother in saying, “Gloria a Dios!”

[Photo credit: Reuters] MAKE A DIFFERENCE Helping families who have just experienced a disaster is a wonderful way to share the love of Christ and open doors for Gospel witness. Your children could collect clothing or food for a family that has lost everything in a fire. Your county government’s office of Family and Children Services or nearest Red Cross chapter (http://www.redcross.org/where) may be able to help you find a family to help. The North American Mission Board can help your congregation become a Disaster Ready Church (http://www.namb.net/readychurch). A donation to BGR’s Disaster Response Fund (https://gobgr.org/donate) would help families like Lasaro’s. BGR’s gift catalog (https://gobgr.org/catalog) also offers many ideas for fund-raising options your children could pursue.
