Who Wears the Pants! By Bridget Williams

Yes, of course you do! There’s no doubt about it. Season after season we’ve told you to be beautiful and girly, poised, proper and pretty in your darling skirts (mini or pencil) and dresses (maxi or mini), but this Spring and Summer 2009, is your time to step into and pull up your trousers ladies. If there is one new piece to purchase this season, it is the New Pant (and a rockin high heel, of course!) Well, that would be two new pieces. But, you get my point. Don’t worry, mini skirts and dresses are back as well… but there really is plenty of time before we start to bare our legs. It’s still winter in the Western world. Whether designers imagined you strutting in St. Tropez or blasting-off to Saturn, they almost all agreed that pants should be loosened up around the hips – think pajama styles -- draped, or pleated, and in some cases – with a line that tapers down toward the ankle. There are certainly endless variations of the new silhouette, from Ralph Lauren’s Moroccan style harem pants to Ferragamo’s ultra-wide legs to the subtly tailored, most office- appropriate looks by Giorgio Armani, who first brought this very same look to the masses in the 80’s. A-ha! You remember, don’t you? And in his latest collection there is no exception to that rule, with a feast of single-buttoned, waisted and flared suit jackets, in traditional men’s fabrics, satins and jerseys. Worn with impeccable silk pajama trousers. Domenico

Dolce and Stefano Gabbana didn’t hold back either when it came to floaty pajama trousers in sensual fabrics, and of course, the wide knotted belt. Pants are straight (Givenchy), with tight fitted stretch denim and leather effects or just luscious in leather (Hermes) or drainpiped at Burberry Prorsum. Of course the power pant could not go unnoticed or unmentioned from Donna Karan’s extreme droops to Dsquared’s throwback to the 70’s. Miami gliz flirted with Long Island elegance or West Coast glamour in the form of chic denim, tailored pieces exuding a decidedly summery feel… yes summer! But, with all the variations of pants on the rise, nothing could touch the most notable trouser of all. Should you need to require a major “IT” item this season, get yourself into a Jumpsuit, the piece destined for one season wonderment. Spring runways were inundated with the throwback style. I think, going to the ladies room is going to be a real struggle, but this cheeky piece makes for easy one-stop dressing. From Chanel to Proenza, the all-in-ones came sleeveless, strapless, one-shouldered, uncompromisingly contemporary, and ultratight all covered in crystals, Alexander McQueen, of course.
