About Woodcut Maps Woodcut Maps was prototyped in 2010 and launched in March 2012. It is the creation of Gabe Smedresman and Catherine Herdlick, two game designers. The first map ever completed was a wedding present for Smedresman’s college friend, depicting a map featuring the dorm building the two had shared. Woodcut Maps works exclusively with local vendors like MacBeath Hardwood and local service providers like Pagoda Arts. The maps are assembled out of a workshop in the Mission District of San Francisco by a growing team of local artisans that includes the original founders, Chase Clark and Nicole Santucci. Since launching publically in March 2012, customers from around the globe have designed over 40,000 maps, and Woodcut Maps has delivered over 600 custom maps to customers in Canada, Germany, Australia, Japan, California, Missouri, and beyond. Our ready-made house designs have been sold at local craft fairs, galleries and on FAB.com, and the product has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle as well as on popular blogs like Boingboing, Hacker News, Inhabitat, Thrillist and Gizmodo. In November 2012, we launched our newest product line: custom wood-inlay iPhone backs.
Q: How are the maps made? A: By algorithms, lasers, and hands. The online design tool is used to select size/orientation/zoom and assign woods to features like water or parks. Then we process the files to make them legible by the laser cutting machine we use to cut the veneers. From there on out, everything is done by hand: inlay/marquetry, gluing, sanding, finishing and labeling. Q: Is each map really a one-of-a-kind? A: Yes! Each map is hand-numbered and has it’s own unique look due to the natural characteristics of the wood grains and the fact that they are hand-crafted.
Q: What if the map I want isn’t listed here? A: We can make maps of just about any college campus, neighborhood or city in the world. You can try our online design tool (http://woodcutmaps.com) to see what’s possible. Or, let a member of our team know what you’re looking for, and we’ll help you design the perfect map. Additionally, if you have a special estate map, transit map, trail map, campus map, etc. in mind that doesn’t appear on our site, let us know - we can woodcutmapify it for a one-time design fee. Please note: designs not listed in this catalog may be subject to different pricing.

Q: Can you include my logo, a place marker, or words in the maps? A: Yes! It costs a little extra depending on what you want ($10-$30 per map). Let us know what you want and we’ll help make it happen. Q: Can I request versions of these wholesale designs with different kinds of woods? A: Yes! Please note that certain woods may be subject to different pricing.
Q: Where do you get your woods? A: Our current exclusive wood veneer supplier is MacBeath Hardwood, a local wood supplier based out of San Francisco and Berkeley, California. All of our woods are 100% natural – we never stain or dye them. The rich and diverse colors you see are courtesy of Mother Nature!

About Woodcut Maps Woodcut Maps was prototyped in 2010 and launched in March 2012. It is the creation of Gabe Smedresman and Catherine Herdlick, two game designers. The first map ever completed was a wedding present for Smedresman’s college friend, depicting a map featuring the dorm building the two had shared. Woodcut Maps works exclusively with local vendors like MacBeath Hardwood and local service providers like Pagoda Arts. The maps are assembled out of a workshop in the Mission District of San Francisco by a growing team of local artisans that includes the original founders, Chase Clark and Nicole Santucci. Since launching publically in March 2012, customers from around the globe have designed over 40,000 maps, and Woodcut Maps has delivered over 600 custom maps to customers in Canada, Germany, Australia, Japan, California, Missouri, and beyond. Our ready-made house designs have been sold at local craft fairs, galleries and on FAB.com, and the product has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle as well as on popular blogs like Boingboing, Hacker News, Inhabitat, Thrillist and Gizmodo. In November 2012, we launched our newest product line: custom wood-inlay iPhone backs.
Q: How are the maps made? A: By algorithms, lasers, and hands. The online design tool is used to select size/orientation/zoom and assign woods to features like water or parks. Then we process the files to make them legible by the laser cutting machine we use to cut the veneers. From there on out, everything is done by hand: inlay/marquetry, gluing, sanding, finishing and labeling. Q: Is each map really a one-of-a-kind? A: Yes! Each map is hand-numbered and has it’s own unique look due to the natural characteristics of the wood grains and the fact that they are hand-crafted.
Q: What if the map I want isn’t listed here? A: We can make maps of just about any college campus, neighborhood or city in the world. You can try our online design tool (http://woodcutmaps.com) to see what’s possible. Or, let a member of our team know what you’re looking for, and we’ll help you design the perfect map. Additionally, if you have a special estate map, transit map, trail map, campus map, etc. in mind that doesn’t appear on our site, let us know - we can woodcutmapify it for a one-time design fee. Please note: designs not listed in this catalog may be subject to different pricing.

Q: Where do you get your woods? A: Our current exclusive wood veneer supplier is MacBeath Hardwood, a local wood supplier based out of San Francisco and Berkeley, California. All of our woods are 100% natural – we never stain or dye them. The rich and diverse colors you see are courtesy of Mother Nature!
