Why Do We Need the Bible? Memory Verse: 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Bible Passage: The Book of the Law – 2 Kings 22:8-13 Go Deeper: An immediate connection will happen between this week’s key character and the kids you lead. Josiah was only 8 years old when he became king over Judah. Josiah’s grandfather, Manasseh, took the throne at the age of 12. And Josiah’s father, Amon, was 22 when he took the throne. Josiah, by God’s providence, was a different leader than his father or grandfather; they had done evil in God’s sight as leaders over Judah. Scripture says that Josiah did that which was right in God’s eyes, just as his ancestor David had done. (2 Kings 22:2) Eighteen years into Josiah’s reign, he changed the course of Jewish history. He endorsed temple renovations and uncovered the lost scrolls, copies of God’s Word. The story you will lead kids through this week uses Josiah’s revival as an indicator of how God uses His Word in our lives today, too. Josiah was grieved that his ancestors had not followed God’s Word closely, and so Josiah made a covenant with the people to return together to God’s Word. Take time to read his covenant promise in 2 Kings 23:3. There is another key connection you’ll want to note as a leader this week. The Hebrew Scriptures use the same words for “book” and “law” in numerous places throughout the Old Testament, including 2 Kings 22:8, to describe the scrolls Hilkiah found. One such place is Joshua 1:8. The Bible does indeed, according to this week’s key Q&A, tell us how to live. This instruction only works, however, if we apply its practical teachings. Both Manasseh and Amon had access to God’s Words as well. In fact, every king described in the Old Testament as an evildoer had had the same access to Scripture. They chose simply not to follow God’s Word. Josiah was grieved by the actions of his ancestors. And out of his grief, he observed God’s Word was right and put it into action.

This week’s memory verse highlights Paul’s words to Timothy about the ability of God’s Word to teach, to rebuke, to correct, and to train. Discovering the law certainly provided those four things for Josiah. Relative to his age, it’s important to note additional words from Paul to Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:12. By observing God’s Word, the kids in your group, no matter their age, can set a powerful example of God to others.
