Welcome to the Great Plains Trail of Oklahoma. Due to its moderate climate and geographic position within North America, western Oklahoma offers year-round wildlife viewing opportunities. Western Oklahoma is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife: 380 Bird Species 106 Mammal Species 56 Amphibians & 102 Reptiles Over 200 Butterfly Species & Dragonfly Species
More than 19 natural community types support this diversity from the shortgrass prairies of the High Plains Loop, to the Shinnery oak mottes of the Black Kettle Loop, to the alkaline flats of the Salt Plains Loop to the Gypsum caves of the Bats and Bluffs Loop, to the granitic boulder mountains of the Quartz Mountain Loop and much, much more. This checklist highlights those species that you are most likely to observe. So, get your binoculars, spotting scopes, cameras, your favorite field guides and hit the Trail!

Over 380 species have been observed in western Oklahoma throughout seasonal avian movements. With few exceptions, only birds considered common to western Oklahoma with a reasonable chance of seeing the birds, are listed. Non-native birds are not listed. Take note of the season code so you will know what to expect while on the Trail.
