Managing Supply Chain Risks--Darin Matthews Our supply chains are full of risks, including financial, operational, environmental and political risks. How do we go about managing these risks as procurement professionals? This session will talk about the various approaches to risk management, as there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to risk. Do we avoid it, mitigate it, transfer it, or just keep our fingers crossed? Case studies will stress the importance of properly managing supply chain risks.

Sustainable Procurement Strategies-Darin Matthews What are leading organizations doing to promote sustainable procurement? In all sectors across the globe, we are seeing an increased importance placed on sustainability. In addition to traditional areas such as paper with high postconsumer waste and earth friendly cleaners, organizations are looking at social equity and diversity as key areas of sustainability. Examples from leading organizations will be shared.

Managing Contract Disputes Despite our best efforts in solicitation development and contract award, public procurement professionals are often faced with protests and disputes. Whether it is a disagreement over which supplier received the contract, or a difference of opinion on contract interpretation with the selected supplier, we need to be able to resolve. This session will include real life examples of contract disputes and their outcomes.

Director of Procurement University of California - Santa Cruz

He is a past-president of the Oregon Public Purchasing Association and a former board member for the Institute for Supply Management.

Darin speaks throughout the world on a variety of procurement topics, and his writings have been featured in Purchasing Today, The Public Manager and The Journal of Public Procurement.

He is a national columnist for American City and County and his books include Warehousing and Inventory Control, Logistics and Transportation, and Effective Supply Management Performance. He has lectured at numerous universities throughout North America and serves on the faculty of Portland State University, School of Business Administration.

Darin is a Certified Public Procurement Officer (CPPO), a Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) and a Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.).

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business/Political Science and a Master’s degree in Acquisition Management. Darin is an instructor for the Institute for Public Procurement and served as their President in 2007.

Darin Matthews has over twenty years of procurement and supply management experience in state and local government, as well as the private industry. He formerly served as director of contracting and procurement for Portland State University where he oversaw procurement, contracting, and capital construction. Under his leadership, PSU implemented technology improvements in the procurement process, and also experienced record levels of participation for minority, women and emerging small businesses.
