KEY NOTES TO CONSIDER The only team in the nation to win its conference in each of the last three years, Wisconsin enters the 2013 season riding the longest active bowl streak of any Big Ten program — 11 straight seasons — after playing in its third-consecutive Rose Bowl. The Badgers begin the season ranked No. 23 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Poll, marking the sixth time in seven years that UW will enter the season ranked. UW returns 14 of its 22 regular starters from 2012, eight on offense and six on defense. In addition, the Badgers return both placekickers from last year, their punter and long snapper.
An All-Big Ten selection last year, ILB Chris Borland enters his senior season on the preseason watch lists of five major awards and will anchor the Badgers’ new-look 3-4 defense.

NUMBERS TO KNOW
.741 13
Wisconsin is one of just 11 programs nationally to average 10 wins over the last four seasons. The Badgers went 40-14 (.741) from 2009-12, trailing only Ohio State (41) for the most wins by a Big Ten school in that span.
ILB Chris Borland has forced 13 fumbles in his career, entering his senior season just one forced fumble shy of matching the all-time FBS record. Borland’s 13 forced fumbles are seven more than the No. 2 spot on UW’s all-time list.

Gary Andersen begins his first season as Wisconsin’s head coach after being hired on Dec. 20, 2012. Andersen, 49, spent the last four seasons at Utah State, leading the Aggies to a school-record 11 wins in 2012 and a No. 16 ranking in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll. Andersen looks to become the latest head coach to win his Badgers debut. Of UW’s first 31 head coaches, 21 scored victories in their first game at the helm of the UW program. Andersen was named WAC Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year award after guiding the Aggies to the WAC title and firstever 10-win season in 2012. Utah State had a combined six wins in the previous three seasons before Andersen took over in 2009. He led the Aggies to 18 victories in his final two seasons alone, scoring the program’s first bowl bids since 1997 with back-to-back appearances in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in 2011 and 2012. Andersen, who was the defensive coordinator at Utah for four seasons before getting the head job at Utah State, has a history of developing tremendous defenses. In 2012, Utah State ranked seventh in the country in scoring defense, allowing just 15.4 points per game. At Utah, Andersen orchestrated the defense of the 2008 Utes that went undefeated, knocked off Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and finished No. 2 in the final AP poll. Andersen has brought in seven new assistant coaches to join running backs coach Thomas Hammock and cornerbacks coach Ben Strickland, who were retained from the previous staff. New to the staff are offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig (QB), defensive coordinator Dave Aranda (LB) and assistants Chris Beatty (WR), Bill Busch (S), Jeff Genyk (TE), Chad Kauha’aha’a (DL) and T.J. Woods (OL).
STREAKS ON THE LINE Wisconsin has won its season opener every year since 1998, a run of 15 consecutive victories that is tied with USC for the third-longest active streak in the FBS, trailing only Nebraska (27) and Florida (23). The Badgers have won 17 consecutive home openers at Camp Randall Stadium, dating back to 1996. UW will start a season at home for the 13th time in the last 18 seasons. In non-conference play, Wisconsin rides a 26-game home win streak into Saturday’s game. That matches Boise State for the second-longest active streak among FBS teams, trailing only LSU (37), which hasn’t lost a non-conference home game since Sept. 1, 2001. The Badgers’ last loss to a non-conference foe at Camp Randall came in a 23-5 loss to UNLV on Sept. 13, 2003.
RETURN OF THE MAC Saturday’s game will mark the first-ever meeting between Wisconsin and UMass. Wisconsin is 29-2 all-time against members of the Mid-American Conference, including a 27-2 mark at Camp Randall Stadium. UW’s setbacks against MAC teams both came in 1988 to Western Michigan (24-14, Sept. 3) and Northern Illinois (19-17, Sept. 17). Since the NCAA divided into the subdivisions now known as the FBS and FCS in 1978, Wisconsin is 55-12 against FBS opponents from outside the six “BCS AQ” conferences, including a 40-7 mark at home.
2
The Badgers’ last loss to an FBS opponent from outside a BCS AQ conference was UW’s 21-19 defeat at the hands of No. 2 TCU in the 2011 Rose Bowl. That loss snapped the Badgers’ run of 21 consecutive wins over non-BCS AQ teams. UW has won 16 consecutive homes games against FBS teams from outside the BCS AQ conferences, dating back to its 23-5 loss to UNLV on Sept. 13, 2003.
GOOD TO BE HOME UW has gone 25-3 at home over the past four seasons, matching Alabama and South Carolina for the fifth-best home winning percentage among BCS conference teams at .893. Ammong Big Ten teams, only Ohio State (27-3, .900) has won a higher percentage of its home games in that span. The Badgers are 55-6 at Camp Randall since the start of the 2004 season, good for a winning percentage of .902. That’s the third-best mark of any FBS team over that span, trailing only Boise State (.948) and Oklahoma (.927): HOME WINNING PERCENTAGE, 2004-PRESENT Team Record 1. Boise State 55-3 (.948) 2. BEST OF THE BCS Since the start of the Bowl Championship Series in the 1998 season, the Badgers have won 137 games, the 11th-most of any FBS team. The Badgers are one of just 12 programs to have won at least 70 percent of their games during the BCS era. Among Big Ten programs, only Ohio State has more wins (149) and a better winning percentage (.789) since the start of the 1998 season. WINNING PERCENTAGE, 1998-PRESENT Team Pct. 1. LOOKING BACK ON 2012 For the first time in school history, Wisconsin claimed a third-consecutive Big Ten title in 2012. The Badgers defeated Nebraska, 70-31, in the 2012 Big Ten Football Championship Game to earn their 14th conference crown all-time. The Badgers joined Marshall (which won the first four Mid-American Conference championship games from 1997-2000) as the only team to win its league title game in each of the game’s first two occasions. The Badgers became the third Big Ten program to play in three consecutive Rose Bowl games, joining Ohio State (1973-76) and Michigan (1977-79).
A total of 41 different players started at least one game for the Badgers in 2012. Of those players, 31 are slated to return in 2013 (75.6 percent). Of those 31 players who have started at least one game, 11 have started at least 10 games in their Badgers careers. That group is led by LB Chris Borland and DT Ethan Hemer, who have 33 career starts. WR Jared Abbrederis (28), LG Ryan Groy (20), TE Jacob Pedersen (20), FS Dezmen Southward (17), LB Ethan Armstrong (16), RT Rob Havenstein (15), DT Beau Allen (14), DE Brendan Kelly (14) and TE Brian Wozniak (12) are the others.
THE JOY OF SIX UW’s roster features a pair of players that have been granted a sixth season of eligibility by the NCAA: senior OLB Brendan Kelly and senior QB Curt Phillips.
CALLING ALL CAPTAINS UW’s 27-man Leadership Committee will serve as team captains for the 2013 season. The Leadership Committee is made up of 11 seniors (Jared Abbrederis, Beau Allen, Ethan Armstrong, Chris Borland, Ryan Groy, Ethan Hemer, Brendan Kelly, Jacob Pedersen, Curt Phillips, Dezmen Southward, James White), 7 juniors (Sam Arneson, Kyle Costigan, Kenzel Doe, Rob Havenstein, Warren Herring, Peniel Jean, Konrad Zagzebski), 5 sophomores (Jordan Fredrick, Melvin Gordon, Darius Hillary, Jake Keefer, Joel Stave) and 4 freshmen (Vince Biegel, Bart Houston, Leo Musso, Dan Voltz). Each of the Badgers’ 23 seniors will represent the team during the coin toss of at least one game this season.
WALK-ON WAY Since the conclusion of the 2011 season, seven current Badgers have been awarded a scholarship after beginning their careers as walk-ons. The most recent was senior OLB Nick Hill, who received his scholarship during fall camp. He joins senior S Kyle Zuleger, senior WR Jared Abbrederis, senior TE Brock DeCicco, senior DE Ethan Hemer, senior OLB Ethan Armstrong and sophomore QB Joel Stave as former walk-ons who have earned scholarships. In all, nine scholarship players on the Badgers’ current roster began their careers

Wisconsin is one of just three teams in the nation to return a running back with 2,000-plus career rushing yards and a wide receiver with 2,000-plus career receiving yards. Senior RB James White enters 2013 as the nation’s No. 2 returning rusher among running backs with 2,571 career rushing yards. Senior WR Jared Abbrederis, who leads all active receivers with an average of 16.6 yards per reception for his career, has amassed 2,059 receiving yards in his first three seasons. Buffalo, with RB Branden Oliver (2,514) and WR Alex Neutz (2,070), and USC, with RB Silas Redd (2,583) and WR Marquis Lee (2,085), are the other FBS teams with a 2,000-yard gainer returning at both positions.
MAKING A RUN FOR IT Over the past three seasons (since the start of the 2010 season), the Badgers have rushed for 134 touchdowns, the most of any team in the nation. Oregon (132) ranks No. 2 in that span. Wisconsin seeks to continue its streak of producing 1,000-yard rushers, which stands at eight straight seasons after Montee Ball finished third nationally with 1,830 yards in 2012. Senior RB James White already has a 1,000-yard season to his credit after rushing for 1,052 yards as a freshman in 2010. UW’s run of eight consecutive seasons with at least one 1,000-yard rusher ties the Badgers with Penn State for the longest such streak in the nation. Oklahoma State
HONORING ‘OTIS’ The Badgers will carry the memory of a fallen friend with them when they take the field this season. The players will wear a special decal on their helmets in memory of former team manager Kevin Green, who was better known as “Otis” to his friends inside and outside the UW football program. Otis, 22, was killed in a car accident on June 15, shortly after graduating from UW. A charitable fund in Otis’ name is in the works, while the UW equipment staff hopes to begin an annual golf outing to raise funds for a student manager scholarship in his honor.
and Oregon have the next-longest active streaks at six years each. The Badgers averaged 247.5 rushing yards per game in Big Ten play last season after posting averages of 247.2 in 2011 and 242.2 in 2010. UW is the first Big Ten team to average 240+ rushing yards in conference play in three straight seasons since at least 1992. Despite starting just two games as a Badger, senior RB James White enters 2013 as the second-leading rusher among active FBS running backs with 2,571 career yards (he trails only USC RB Silas Redd - 2,583). White is 12th in school history in career rushing yards and owns nine career 100-yard games. White’s school-record average of 6.1 yards per carry over his career leads all FBS running backs and makes him the lone RB in the country with a career average of 6.0 yards per carry or better. White tails only NIU QB Jordan Lynch — at 6.6 yards per carry — among all returning players nationally. Sophomore RB Melvin Gordon ran for 621 yards on just 62 carries last year. He led the country with 10.0 yards per carry.
UNDER CENTER Wisconsin was one of nine schools to start at least three different quarterbacks last season, as Danny O’Brien, Joel Stave and Curt Phillips all started games for UW. Stave and Phillips, who was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, return for 2013. Senior Curt Phillips led the Badgers on successful fourth-quarter comebacks to force overtime in two of his first three career starts: At Penn State, the Badgers got the ball back with 3:51 to play and trailing, 21-14. Phillips went 6-for-7 for 54 yards and a game-tying 4-yard TD pass to Jeff Duckworth with 0:18 remaining.

OFFENSE / DEFENSE NOTES Against Ohio State, the Badgers got the ball back with 1:33 to play and trailing, 14-7. Despite being sacked on first down, Phillips led the Badgers 41 yards down the field in 1:25 by going 5-for-5 for 48 yards and a game-tying 5-yard TD pass to Jacob Pedersen with 0:08 remaining. Phillips became the fifth-consecutive Wisconsin QB to win his first career start, a list that includes all three of UW’s starters last season. Before being sidelined for the season with a broken clavicle vs. Michigan State, sophomore QB Joel Stave was leading the Big Ten in pass efficiency rating at 149.6. Stave was 70-for-118 with six touchdowns and three interceptions and was averaging 157.7 yards per game. Stave started five games last year. With a career-high 254 yards vs. Illinois, Stave became the eighth QB in Wisconsin history to throw for 200-plus yards in three consecutive games and the first to do so in his first three starts since Tyler Donovan in 2006 and 2007.
ON THE LINE UW returns three starters from last year’s offensive line, LG Ryan Groy, RG Kyle Costigan and RT Rob Havenstein. Groy and Havenstein started all 14 games a year ago, while Costigan made nine starts. The Badgers must replace C Travis Frederick and LT Rick Wagner, who started a combined 68 games in their careers. The leading candidate to take over at center is redshirt freshman Dan Voltz, with junior Dallas Lewallen also vying for time. Sophomore Tyler Marz and senior Zac Matthias also will factor into the Badgers’ rotation on the O-line.
PROGRAMMED TO RECEIVE Senior TE Jacob Pedersen was named Kwalick-Clark Big Ten Tight End of the Year last season. With 14 career TD receptions, Pedersen ranks 11th on UW’s career TD receptions list. The Badgers return two other expereinced TEs in 2013. Senior Brian Woziniak has started 12 games in his career and had nine catches a year ago. Junior Sam Arneson has played in 23 games and had a pair of TD grabs last year. Senior WR Jared Abbrederis enters 2013 tops among active FBS players with an average of 16.7 yards per catch for his career. A former walk-on QB, Abbrederis ranks sixth in school history with 2,059 career receiving yards and seventh with 124 career receptions. Also a prolific punt and kickoff returner, Abbrederis needs just 177 all-purpose yards to pass Ira Matthews (3,700) for 10th on UW’s career list in that category. Despite missing the second half of UW’s game vs. Oregon State and the entire Utah State game with an injury, Abbrederis ranked third in the Big Ten with 837
receiving yards. He joins Lee Evans, Travis Beckum and Nick Toon as the only UW player to have at least 800 receiving yards in two different seasons. With 147 yards vs. UTEP, 142 yards at Nebraska, and 117 yards vs. Illinois, Abbrederis became the first Badger with three consecutive 100-yard receiving games since Lee Evans in 2001. Behind Abbrederis, UW has five wide receivers on the roster that have caught at least one pass in their careers. While Abbrederis’ career numbers are 124 catches for 2,059 yards and 16 TDs, the other five experienced WRs have combined for 68 catches, 712 yards and 3 TDs.
ON THE DEFENSE Wisconsin is one of 10 teams that has ranked in the top 20 nationally in both scoring defense and total defense for each of the last two seasons, joining Alabama, Boise State, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Rutgers, Florida and South Carolina. Last season, the Badgers ranked 15th nationally in total defense (322.6 yards per game) and 17th nationally in scoring defense (19.1 points per game). UW has allowed just 19.1 points per game over the last two seasons. That is the 13thbest mark in the country over that span. It is the first time Wisconsin has given up fewer than 20.0 points per game in consecutive seasons since 1998-99. Over the past two seasons, Wisconsin has given up just 296.4 yards per game in Big Ten play, best in the conference. Michigan is second-best in that span at 299.7 yards per contest. At 193.6 yards allowed per game, the Badgers ranked 18th in the country in opponents’ passing yards per game last season. UW allowed just 5.8 yards per attempt, tied for seventh-best in the country. Over the past two seasons, Wisconsin has allowed just 178.6 yards per game through the air. That is the seventh-best average in the country. The Badgers forced opponents to go threeand-out on 41.7 percent of their drives last season, the fourth-best rate of any team in the nation. Of the 175 drives by UW opponents (excluding five possessions to end a half), 73 ended without the opponent recording a first down: DEFENSIVE THREE-AND-OUT LEADERS Team Drives 3-and-Out 1. Just three years later, however, Alvarez’s 1993 team changed the game in Madison. Three seasons removed from a 1-10 mark in Alvarez’s 1990 debut, the Badgers went 10-1-1, hoisted the Big Ten trophy and scored UW’s first-ever Rose Bowl win. Over the 20 seasons that have followed that magical season, UW has become one of the Big Ten’s most consistent winners: Only Ohio State (10) has claimed a share of more Big Ten titles over the past 20 years than the six won by UW. The Buckeyes are also the only team to boast more wins (200) and a better winning percentage (.796) in that span than the Badgers, who have gone 175-76-4 (.694). Wisconsin claimed the first two Western Conference titles in 1896 and 1897. Over the next 95 seasons, however, UW won or shared just six conference championships. The Badgers have matched that output in just 20 seasons by winning at least a share of six Big Ten crowns since 1993, including the last three in a row.

20 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK WISCONSIN 35, NEVADA 17 — SEPT. 4, 1993 (MADISON, WIS.) Behind a school-record five touchdown passes from QB Darrell Bevel, the Badgers opened the 1993 season with a 35-17 win over Nevada at Camp Randall Stadium. UW rolled up 435 yards of total offense — then the secondhighest total in the Barry Alvarez era — and held a 28-3 lead on the Wolf Pack after three quarters in a game that was never close. J.C. Dawkins caught two of Bevell’s TD tosses while the Badgers’ defense contributed four interceptions, including a pair by Jeff Messenger, who went on to finish the season with seven picks.

In 1990, Barry Alvarez took over a Wisconsin football program that was struggling both competitively and financially. The Badgers had managed a winning record in just five of the previous 20 seasons and hadn’t won the Big Ten since 1962.

Ten and No. 17 nationally in third-down defense. That was the fourth-best effort in Wisconsin history. Wisconsin allowed opponents an average 16.7 first downs per game, the seventhlowest average of any team in the nation. Over the last two seasons, the Badgers have allowed just 16.3 first downs per game, fifth-best in the country.
D-LINE DEPTH As the Badgers prepare to switch their base defense to a 3-4 look under firstyear defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, Wisconsin returns all but one starter from last year’s defensive line. Ethan Hemer and Beau Allen are seniors in 2013 and started every game a year ago. DE David Gilbert elected to forego his final season of eligibility at UW due to a series of injuries and has since enrolled at Miami. As defensive ends in UW’s previous 4-3 look, seniors Tyler Dippel, Pat Muldoon and Brendan Kelly combined to start all 14 games last year.
MIDDLE MEN In seniors Ethan Armstrong and Chris Borland, the Badgers return a pair of players that started every game last year at linebacker. Borland has forced 13 fumbles in his career, the most in school history and the most among active NCAA players. He needs just one forced fumble to tie the FBS
career record of 14, which is shared by five players, including Purdue product Ryan Kerrigan, who holds the Big Ten’s career record. Borland enters his senior season with 308 career tackles. That ranks 19th in school history. He needs 144 to become the alltime UW leader. With 41.5 tackles for loss in his career, Borland ranks fourth among active FBS players. Armstrong was third on the team and 14th in the Big Ten in total tackles last season with 93.
START-UP SECONDARY Wisconsin loses three starters from last year’s secondary in CB Devin Smith, CB Marcus Cromartie and SS Shelton Johnson. The lone returning starter is FS Dezmen Southward. Southward has played in 40 career games with 16 starts and was fourth on the team with 69 tackles last year. Among the candidates in the secondary, junior CB Peniel Jean has played in 19 career games and sophomore CB Darius Hillary played in 13 games a year ago with one start.
ON SPECIAL TEAMS Senior WR Jared Abbrederis has 493 career punt return yards. Thats is good for fourth among returning FBS players and sixth in school history.

Abbrederis’ career average of 11.2 yards per punt return is fifth-best in school history, while he holds the Badgers’ career record for kickoff return average at 25.8 yards per return. P Drew Meyer, an honorable mention AllBig Ten selection as a rookie in 2012, averaged 41.5 yards per punt, which ranked him seventh among freshman punters nationally last season.
GOING CAMPING A total of 32 Wisconsin products opened training camp on an NFL roster this season, with 30 remaining on an active roster as of Aug. 26. DE Louis Nzegwu (Carolina) and WR David Gilreath (Pittsburgh) did not make the cut as teams dropped down to a 75-man roster. UW saw six rookies join NFL camps in 2013, with DBs Marcus Cromartie (San Diego), Shelton Johnson (Oakland) and Devin Smith (Pittsburgh) signing as free agents to join draft picks Travis Frederick (Dallas), Montee Ball (Denver) and Rick Wagner (Baltimore) as newcomers making their first NFL roster.
BADGERS IN THE DRAFT Wisconsin had three players taken in the 2013 NFL Draft, including C Travis Frederick, who was selected by Dallas in the first round. RB Montee Ball was a second-round pick of the Denver Broncos, while OL Rick Wagner went in the fifth round to the Baltimore Ravens. With the selection of Frederick and Wagner, the Badgers have had seven offensive linemen selected over the past three NFL drafts, easily the highest total of any college program. Alabama and Georgia rank in a tie for second in that span, with each producing four draft picks on the offensive line. Among its 14 NFL draft picks over the past three years, UW has produced nine top-75 selections, matching North Carolina for the third-highest total of any team. Only Alabama (13) and LSU (12) have produced more top-75 picks in that span. Wisconsin’s nine top-75 picks represent one-third of the Big Ten’s total over the past three years. The Badgers have had as many top-75 picks over that span as Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State and Penn State COMBINED. A UW offensive lineman has been selected in the first round of each of the last three NFL drafts. Alabama (3) and USC (2) are the only other programs with multiple first-round picks from the offensive line over the last three years. Wisconsin was one of just three schools to have multiple offensive linemen selected in the 2013 NFL Draft, joining Alabama (3) and North Carolina (3). C Travis Frederick was picked in the first round by Dallas and LT Rick Wagner was drafted in the fifth round by Baltimore.
DECADE OF DRAFT PICKS Since 2000, Wisconsin has produced a total of 60 NFL draft picks. That total ranks second-best among Big Ten teams, trailing only Ohio State’s 85, and is tied for the 11th-most of any program in the nation. The Badgers have produced 12 first-round picks since 2000, the 12th-most of any program in the country. CAMP RANDALL STADIUM One of the nation’s most historic college football venues, Camp Randall Stadium also happens to be one of the intimidating for opposing teams, and Wisconsin has made the most of the home-field advantage that the raucous atmosphere provides. Since the start of the 2004 season, the Badgers have compiled a 55-6 record (.902) at Camp Randall Stadium. That is the best home record in the Big Ten over that span and the thirdbest in the country (behind only Boise State and Oklahoma). Including its 31-18 win over Ohio State in 2010 Wisconsin owns a 4-5 record all-time against No. 1 teams in Camp Randall Stadium. Including its unblemished home records in 2010 and 2011, UW has compiled a 7-0 record at Camp Randall Stadium five times (1898, 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011). Wisconsin won 21 consecutive games at Camp Randall Stadium from Oct. 31, 2009 to Oct. 27, 2012. That is the second-longest home winning streak in school history, trailing only the 25 in a row the Badgers won from 1900-03. The Badgers have allowed fewer than 10 points at home on 16 occasions over the past six seasons. Wisconsin’s only four shutouts since 1999 (65-0 vs. Temple in 2005, 14-0 vs. San Diego State in 2006, 37-0 vs. Purdue in 2009 and 35-0 vs. Oregon State) have occurred at Camp Randall Stadium. Camp Randall Stadium, which opened in 1917, is the fourth-oldest Bowl Subdivision stadium in the nation. The only older on-campus facilities are: Georgia Tech (1913), Mississippi State (1914) and Cincinnati (1916). The Camp Randall grounds were used as a Civil War training site. It also held Confederate soldiers, many of whom died and were laid to rest on the west side of Madison. The area known as “soldiers rest” is the northernmost Confederate cemetery in the United States. Camp Randall Stadium served as a living quarters for students and military personnel during the 1940s. Dormitories were built underneath the east-side stands. Approximately 150 men lived there. In addition, there was a rifle range, as well as boxing and wrestling rooms.

Though it has only been a tradition at Camp Randall Stadium since 1998, “Jump Around” is now a defining part of any UW game day. Between the third and fourth quarters, the song “Jump Around” by House of Pain is played in the facility and the 80,000-plus fans delight in doing as the tune instructs. “Jump Around” was crowned the winner of Sports Illustrated’s “Greatest College Football Traditions” bracket in 2012.

HEAD COACH GARY ANDERSEN
HEAD COACH GARY ANDERSEN FIRST SEASON Gary Andersen was introduced as the 29th head coach in Wisconsin football history on Dec. 20, 2012. He comes to Madison after four seasons as the head coach at Utah State, where he led a program that had just six wins in the previous three seasons to a 26-24 record in his four years at the helm and was named 2012 Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Aggies to the WAC championship and a win in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Andersen guided Utah State to its most successful season in history in 2012. The Aggies won a school-record 11 games, went undefeated in the WAC and captured their first outright league title since 1936. To cap the season, USU defeated Toledo, 41-15, to win the 2012 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. For guiding Utah State to double-digit victories for the first time in history, Andersen was named WAC Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award. In addition to their first bowl win since 1993, the Aggies defeated three teams that finished the season with at least nine wins, with all of those victories coming away from home. That included a win at No. 20 Louisiana Tech, the first road win over a ranked team in in the program’s history. Utah State also defeated in-state rival Utah for the first time since 1997. With consecutive appearances in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, Utah State was bowl eligible in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1960-61. Utah State finished the season ranked No. 16 in the Associated Press Top 25 and was ranked in the AP poll in the each of the last three weeks of the regular season. The Aggies also made their first-ever appearance in the BCS standings, checking in at No. 22 in the final edition of the season. In the three seasons preceding Andersen’s hire (2006-08), Utah State went a combined 6-30 (.167). The Aggies had not finished above .500 since 1996.
