These are lists of documents you can show for voter registration (residence) and voting (proof of identity).

FOR VOTER REGISTRATION: You will need to show proof of residence in Wisconsin to register to vote. To show proof of your current residence, you can use a paper document, or an electronic version, which you can show to the registrar on your smartphone.

To prove residence, you can show these documents, if current and valid:

A current and valid Wisconsin driver’s license; A current and valid Wisconsin state ID card; Any ID card or license issued by a Wisconsin state agency, such as a hunting or fishing license; An employer ID card with your photo and address; A real estate tax bill or receipt for the current year or the year before the date of the election; MAIL BOX A lease agreement (unless you’re registering by mail); A Wisconsin college or university photo ID with a tuition fee receipt; A utility bill (gas, electric or telephone service) received within the past 90 days; Bank statement; Paycheck; or A document issued by a unit of Wisconsin or U.S. government, showing your current address, such as: Car, truck and other vehicle registrations; Speeding tickets, underage drinking tickets or other municipal tickets; Food stamps (SNAP), Medicaid/Badgercare, Wisconsin Works (W-2), and Wisconsin Shares, letters, notices, benefit statements or paperwork; Social Security and SSI notices, letters and benefit statements; Medicare notices and explanation of benefits (EOBs)—not from private health insurance providers; Unemployment compensation notices, letters and benefit statements; Public high school, public technical college, public college and public university letters and documents, including: admissions correspondence, financial aid notices, report cards and class schedules;

Federal or state government financial aid letters and notices—not from private entities, such as Sallie Mae or Great Lakes Higher Education Corp.; Public library letters or records; Court notices and paperwork; Police reports; Tax refund checks or notices from IRS or Wisconsin Department of Revenue; Billing statements and collection notices from a governmental entity; Letters from a federally recognized Wisconsin Native American tribe; Letters, notices or paperwork from city, town, village or public school district; city, town, village or county clerk or treasurer’s office, etc.; Letters, notices or other paperwork from state agencies, such as the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV or DOT), Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Department of Workforce Development (DWD), Department of Health Services (DHS), Department of Children and Families (DCF) and many others; 18 Letters, notices or paperwork from federal agencies, such as Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Social Security Administration (SSA), Department of Veterans Affairs, etc.; or If you are homeless, you can use a letter from an organization providing you with services, which includes your MAILname BOX and describes the location you give as your residence for voting purpose.

You must show a photo ID at the polls. Find how you can obtain a free WI state ID for voting if you don’t have a WI driver’s license or WI state ID at iAmerica.org/voteWI.

4 your identity to vote, you can show these photo IDs if unexpired or expired after Nov. 4, 2014: To prove

A Wisconsin driver’s license; A Wisconsin state ID card; A Wisconsin ID card or driver’s license without a photo if there is a religious exemption; U.S. military ID card; A U.S. passport; An ID card issued by a federally recognized Indian tribe in Wisconsin; or A Wisconsin college or university photo ID showing issue date, signature, and expires no later than two years after issued, plus a separate proof of enrollment. (May be used even if expired before the most recent general election.)

You can also show these documents, if unexpired:

U.S. veteran’s ID card; A U.S. certificate of naturalization issued after Nov. 4, 2014; A driver’s license receipt issued by Wisconsin DOT (valid for 45 days); An ID card receipt issued by Wisconsin DOT (valid for 45 days); or A citation or notice of intent to revoke or suspend a Wisconsin driver’s license that is dated within 60 days of the date of the election.
