HS1002A – Social Determinants of Health Guiding Questions for Who’s Counting: Women and Economics, from Who’s Counting: Marilyn Waring on Sex, Lies and Global Economics, National Film Board of Canada, 1995 WoTerms: United Nations System of National Accounts - an international standard system of national accounts, the aim of which is to provide a national profile of economic activity and to enable international comparisons of all significant economic activity. Subsistence Production/Agriculture – self-sufficient farming in which farmers focus on growing enough food to feed themselves and their families
What are main points/arguments made by Waring?
Air getting worse, education systems are failing, increase in poverty, more homelessness, more housing crisis Rural, conservative, white, wealthy men run the governments Her no-nonsense approach to parliamentary politics earned her a lot of respect and attention early---> second term appointed chair person of the public expenditure committee where she criticised: effectiveness of controls on government spending, accountability of politicians, and a day at hand of bureaucracy
Why is women’s invisibility in macro-economic systems a problem for Waring?
Women do a lot of work that is unpaid work and is not acknowledged (child care, food preparation, ect.) this takes up a lot of time of unpaid work Women are contributors to the economy but not visible as a producer therefore are invisible to policy makers and distribution of benefits--->world situation for women If not earning a salary/wage you can't contribute. Women that have worked long hours for years are invisible and as age become a problem and dependent on state Most work that women to in the home that is unpaid has little to no importance Means there is no value in women's unpaid work and creating the feminization of poverty
What are “time use surveys”? Why are these tools important for policymakers, according to Waring?
To record amount of time women work in the home to keep a productive household and raise children to prove they are productive hard workers and how they are in need of benefits and resources as well
Compare and contrast the examples of “Cathy” and “Ben”? Why are these cases used in the film?
Cathy- prepares and makes food, laundry, ironing, cleaning, taking care of children, disciplining children, taking children to school/daycare, grocery shopping, gardening, garbage, pay bills.....along with other household chores and errands---->economists record her as unoccupied (and unproductive)
Ben- highly trained member of the U.S military, regular duties descend underground with two colleges for hours at a time for an order fire a nuclear missile----->economically active tributes to economic growth, wealth, and economic productivity
Demonstrates workload differences and productiveness to economy
What alternatives are suggested? What do you think about this?
Cut back on war/military expenses CEO's make 250X workers!!!!!????? This film has inspired many people, notably the Who's Counting Project, to work on human-scale economic alternatives, local currency exchanges, and more humane ways of measuring the quality of life Waring maps out an alternative vision based on the idea of time as the new currency
