After capturing six tournament titles, a second place finish at the NCAA West Regional Championship, an eighth place finish at the NCAA National Tournament, one first-team All-American, one honorable mention All-American and one academic All-American, the 2013–2014 women’s golf team recorded another successful season. Returning six players from last year, and the addition of two new players, this year’s squad has the makings to continue the program’s winning tradition. Senior Haley Haught picked up the program’s first-ever first-team All-American honor last season and had the best finish in program history at a national tournament when she finished tied for fifth. Haught’s junior year was tremendous in many aspects, but perhaps her greatest highlight came when she shot a program-low 64 and set the course record at the St. Mary’s Rattler Invitational held at The Dominion Country Club. “Haught has had a tremendous career thus far, and I look to her to continue her on-course leadership as she plays her senior season on the hilltop,” St. Edward’s University head coach Jennifer McNeil said. The remainder of the returning upperclassmen for the Hilltoppers include senior Marissa Bransburg, who appeared in all 10 tournaments last season, and juniors Taylor Dillingham and Jessica Tamén. Joining the two returning juniors are a group of talented sophomores, including academic All-American Isabel Morales, Brianna Vogel and an outstanding transfer from Fresno State, Sandy Livas.
“Having Livas join our team is a true blessing for us,” McNeil said. “I had the pleasure of watching her play many times when she was competing in high school, and I was thrilled she was interested in making St. Edward’s her new home. Each of these players brings a unique talent and skill set to our team. All six returning players experienced playing time last season, and they will play an important role in our success this season.” Johany Rivera will be the lone freshman on the squad this season, but she brings a wealth of talent and success from her career at Smithson Valley High School. “Rivera is a great addition to our team,” McNeil said. “She was a successful high school player who has postseason experience, and that will go a long way in helping our team continue its success.”
