Jewish History in the Bet Shean area:
In the footsteps of King Saul Guided by the Teacher of Tourist Guides
Dr. Hagi Amitzur Bet Shean with its glory and beauty was the arena of several biblical events. We will visit the biblical tel of Bet Shean where the Philistines were at the time of King Saul and his sons. We will discuss and follow the heroic behavior of the residents of Yabesh Gilead and the dramatic end of King Saul. We will also walk in the Roman-Byzantine city, in the footsteps of Josephus and Chaza’l in the area of Bet Shean. From there we will travel to the magnificent remains of a synagogue from the Talmudic period in the ancient Jewish village of Bet Alfa. Then, we will drive along the scenic road of Mt. Gilboa, standing at the site where King Saul died. And on to other beautiful lookout points towards Samaria to the south and Galilee and Golan to the north.
