HAVE YOUR SAY … The next family/resident meeting is on Saturday 29th October at 11:00am. Please do come along and share your thoughts and any ideas with us. Please check the Activity Board for further meeting details.

Hello and Welcome! “Here we are in the season of conkers, Halloween and bonfire night with only 9 weeks to go until Christmas (scary thought). We are about to start the 10-60-06 project on Memory Lane which will involve a lot of training, refurbishment and will ultimately continue to enhance the day to day lives of our residents living with dementia. Although everyone is aware that I have an open door policy, specifically on a Wednesday I will be working late and from ‘3-8 it’s a date’ should you wish to have a chat about any worries or concerns you may have. This is open to staff and relatives. At future relatives’ meetings I will be joined by two Heads of Departments. Please can I remind everyone to add any items to the agenda list prior to the meetings. As always I look forward to leading our fantastic team at Wood Grange to continue to enhance our residents’ lives and ensure that they receive the best care. This can only be achieved if residents, relatives and staff all work together”

Employee of the Month August

September

Magda Skretowicz

Katie Morrison

Due to Barchester restructuring the Home Trainer position in all of their Homes we sadly have to say goodbye to our Christine, but we couldn’t let her go without showing her how much we appreciate her, so staff chose her to be our Employee of the Month for October. She will be leaving us at the end of October and will be sorely missed.

We would like to say a friendly welcome to Tesco’s champion, Viv, who will be visiting us from time to time to help out with certain activities.

OUTSIDE CHARITY Our Macmillan Coffee Morning/Cake Competition was well supported by residents, families and staff. The cakes were judged by Graham Lloyd, resident Rosie’s son (him being a chef) and after a lot of tasting and re-tasting he chose the best decorated cake to be one of our nurses, Simona’s and the best tasting cakes made by one of our domestic Katie’s grandmother. The cakes were then sold by the slice raising a grand total of £209.

Poets’ Corner

Residents had lots of fun reciting poetry on National Poets’ Day. The following poem was composed by resident, Margaret Ellington, 91 years young.

The cat sat up in the tree As happy as he could be He got wet because it started to rain So he fell out the tree right in a drain. POOR PUSSY!!!

News in and around Wood Grange Hello from Activities I do hope that you have all had a lovely summer and re-charged your batteries ready for the long winter ahead. Our summer fete/dog show was a huge success raising over £1,000, something that has been my aim since I started this job 13 years ago. So thank you so much for all of your help and support. I would like to thank families and friends for supporting activities over the last few months, especially our ‘raise money for charity’ meals, one being our ‘back to school’ theme. Our most recent charity is the Carers Sitter Service and after our next event which will be the Builders’ Big Breakfast on Monday 28th November, we will be presenting them with a cheque of the total amount raised some time in December. We are now coming up to one of the busiest times of the year with Christmas fast approaching, so please look out for the December activity sheet in the foyer late November, and as always, anyone is welcome to join in on any of our events. Bye for now, Sandra (Activity Manager)

Martin’s Message Hello everyone. The hanging baskets around the Home will now be cleared away and stored ready for next year, all but a few that will be filled with winter pansies to brighten up the winter days ahead of us. Weather permitting, it is now time for tidying up, removing fallen leaves and dead plants. These will be replaced with more bulbs so that come the Spring, the gardens will once again be full of colour. The garden seating is also having a tidy up before the winter arrives with new gravel and plants being planted around them. A few people have commented on the mushrooms growing on our lawns, due to this ground being re-claimed woodland, this is a perfect place for them to grow. I really wouldn’t recommend them being picked and eaten though.

Tony’s Tip (Maintenance) With the nights starting to feel a little cooler you will now start to think about putting your heating back on so it’s time to get your boiler checked and your radiators are in full working order. Stay safe! Stay warm!

If you have any queries or question regarding the Home surrounds, please feel free to come and have a chat with me.

Specialised frame helps man to stand again A £1,000 grant from Barchester’s Charitable Foundation has helped fund a new standing frame for a man living with cerebral palsy, which has had a dramatic effect on his health. David Cook, aged 28, who lives in Alvechurch, was suffering with increasing health problems because it was very difficult for him to get up from his chair, but since the purchase of a specialised standing frame, David’s father says these problems have been quickly disappearing. Being able to stand strengthens David’s muscles and improves circulation, helping to alleviate many of the problems he was experiencing before. It is making it easier for him to continue living independently, with support from live-in carers.

Residents’ & Relatives’ Surveys The residents’ and relatives’ survey give residents and their family members the chance to give us feedback about the care you or your loved one receives. Your opinion really matters to us and it allows Barchester to make any necessary changes to our services so that we can continue to deliver the highest possible standard of care. Thank you to everyone who has completed the residents’ survey or who has assisted someone with filling it out. All surveys will need to be completed and sent back to us by the end of October. The relatives’ survey will be sent out in September.
