Wood Peak, Sinclair Spur, and M ount M cArthur, N orth Ridge. The A nglo-A m erican team o f G eoff Hornby, Tom N onis, Stephen Jones and Dean Freem an landed on the H ubbard G lacier on M ay 1. On M ay 3 they clim bed a new route on the w est face of W ood Peak (3609 m eters) via the
previously unclim bed Central Spur. The route had previously been attem pt ed by a Canadian party w ho suffered a serious crevasse accident on the cen tral part o f the ridge. This team clim bed closer to the crest and gained the visible sum m it ridge before retreating in poor weather. Incom plete research had led the team to believe that the m ountain may have been unclim bed and so on May 11, N onis, Jones and Freem an reclim bed the ridge and gained the true sum m it 400 m eters beyond the point reached on the first attempt. It tran spired that the W histler team had in fact made the true sum m it two years pre viously. The central spur on the w est face o f W ood Peak has been nam ed the Sinclair Spur in m emory o f M ark Sinclair, an original team m em ber who unfortunately was killed clim bing on L ochnagar ju st before the expedition started. N onis, Jones and Freem an also clim bed the North Ridge of M cA rthur to its junction w ith the sum m it plateau, w here Jones was hit by falling ice and suffered a head injury, forcing a retreat. N onis and Jones ulti m ately w ent on to attem pt the East Ridge o f Logan and reached 4200 meters before being caught in a storm that dropped three m eters of snow in one night. A serious retreat ensued. G
