THIS   IS   THE   WEEK   BEFORE   CHRISTMAS!   Are   you   ready?   For   Advent   this  year,  we  have  reviewed   3  key   promises  (“Messianic   Prophecies”)   in   the   Old   Testament   about   the   coming   Savior.     Review  and  summarize  the  details  of  the  promises  given  to: •Adam  (Genesis  3:15) •Abraham  (Genesis  12:1-‐3) •David  (2  Samuel  7:1-‐17)

Today   we   looked   at   Joseph.   Why   is   Joseph   unique   in   the   list   of   Jesus’   ancestors?   What   is   the   irony   (Luke   3:23)?   If   Joseph   is   not   Jesus’  father,  then  who  is? In  the  Apostles'  Creed  when  we  say,  “  [I  believe]  in  Jesus  Christ,   His  only  Son,  our  Lord:  Who  was  conceived  by  the  Holy  Spirit,  born  of  the  Virgin  Mary.”

This   phrase  teaches   us  the  Scriptural  truths  that  Jesus  is   both  God   and   Man   at   the   same   time.   He   has   two   natures:  a   human   nature   and  a  divine  nature. CONCEIVED  BY  THE  HOLY  SPIRIT How  do  these  verses  teach  us  that  Jesus  is  True  God? Romans  9:5 1  John  5:20 John  1:1-‐2 Matthew  28:18 Matthew  9:6/John  1:3/Hebrews  1:3 BORN  OF  THE  VIRGIN  MARY How  do  these  verses  teach  us  that  Jesus  is  True  Man? Matthew  4:2  /  John  11:35  /  John  19:28 Hebrews  4:14-‐16 What  does  the  Name  “Immanuel”  mean  (Matthew  1:23)? How  does  the  term  “Incarnation”  apply  (John  1:14)? “The  divine   and  the  human   natures   are  united  in  Jesus  Christ.  This   personal   union   began   when   He   became   man   and   continues   forever.”          Small  Catechism,  question  #121

The  “Personal  Union”  is  how  we  confess  what  the   Bible  teaches  us.     Jesus  is  both  God  and  man  at  the  same  time:  He   has  two  Natures  in   one  person.  How  do  these  verses  teach  this  to  us: 1  Timothy  3:16 Colossians  2:9 Isaiah  9:6 There   are  two  terms  that   help   us   to  understand  the   importance  of   Personal   Union   to   our   salvation   and   daily   life   in   Christ,   those   are   “Active  Obedience”  and  “Passive  Obedience”  of  Christ. ACTIVE  OBEDIENCE  (His  Life) Christ   actively   took   our   place   under   the   Law;   the   Ten   Commandments   applied   to   Him,   and   He   fulfilled   them   perfectly.     His  “obedience”  is  credited  to  you  through  faith. Romans  5:19  /  10:4 1  Corinthians  1:30 Philippians  3:9 PASSIVE  OBEDIENCE    (His  Death) As  the   All-‐powerful   Son   of   God,   Christ   passively   let   Himself   suffer   and  die   on  a  cross  in  our  place,    to  be  our   substitute  under   God’s   Law,  Wrath  and  Judgment.

Colossians  1:22 Hebrews  2:14 Mark  10:45  /  John  1:29 1  Peter  1:18-‐19 What  do  you  therefore  confess  about  Jesus  Christ,  the  God-‐man? I   believe   that   Jesus  Christ   is  my   Lord   and   my   Redeemer,  whom   I   love  and  serve  with  my  whole  life.  Small  Catechism,  question  #124 How  do  you  love  and  serve  God  with  your  whole  life? What  does  1  Corinthians  6:20  teach  you? What  do  you  do  when  you  fail?  Where  is  your  comfort  and  hope? How   does   knowing   who   was   born   in   Bethlehem   deepen   the   meaning  of  Christmas  for  you? Do  your  children  understand  WHO  Jesus  is?

As  you  close   your   C3  time   together,  be   sure   to   take   time  to  share   with   each   other   your   Christmas   plans.   Then   pray   for   each   other   asking   the   Lord   to   help   you   understand   the   significance   of   Christmas,   to   worship   Christ   with   great   joy   and   gladness,   and   to   love  and  serve  Him  with  your  whole  life!
